Can we acknowledge how incredibly difficult it is to nail those soft rim shots in the Africa groove? Phenomenal.

A Band's dream to have him as a drummer. Philips is so technically skilled but at the same time trying to play in a modest way. An absolute joy to listen to. The fact that he tries to pick up as much as he can what's going on during the show on stage, says a lot about his class and not being isolated behind his kit.

He’s a natural. Love this guy’s smoothest of the smooth. And of course his intuition feels playing in 3,6,9,12 is the way nature grooves.

One of my milestones you might call it, strangely enough, it to be able to look around the stage or rehearsal area and talk to your bandmates. This is of great convenience, to be able to discuss parts changes etc... This involves somewhat of a detachment from your body and trust it to carry the groove.

I have admired Simon since I first seen him. He blows my mind so relaxed so on top of the beat. He can deliver a groove over any sequence of beats. A complete mystery maybe because he can play from both sides of his brain? I'm going to switch my left hand and foot in my next life!

Never knew who he was until I heard give blood by Pete Townshend and loved that groove and when he finishes the song playing double bass being a younger drummer I was hooked. Then my friend played his Protocol Album and he’s been one of my favorite drummers since then.

I know people who had real problems playing drums together with a sequencer or synth, Simple Minds did have troubles with it in their live performances so this is true, organic against programmed is still a thing I hear now. Even today, extraordinary.

Interesting that he says it's easier to lock in when you play quietly. If I play with a sequencer, my instinct is always to play louder; next time, I'll try it his way...

As a drummer, I wish I was able to play live with my head up and looking everywhere etc, but idk I'm just kinda insecure. I wear all black, I have long hair, and I wear a black cowboy hat... so people rarely see my face during a performance. I've actually been introduced before as "the mysterious one in the back", which I like if I'm honest, but at the same time, maybe I can be mysterious as well as confident enough to be a little bit more out there as a performer. I suppose that'll take practice. Thank you Simon!

It's infuriating that these little demo clips on YT are so much better recorded and sound much better than it ever does on the records. I've been noticing it more and more as various artists play demos of drums, guitars, bass, brass, percussion etc, and it nearly always sounds better than the records they're from.

Agreed. This trend to obscenely overproduce music is ridiculous. Thanks, hip hop. Once music stopped being made by musicians and started being made by “producers” the soul of it was lost in the drive to make money, not art.

I have this snare, his Monarch signature. You can get this exact tone out of it, there is a bit of a formula to the way you have to tune it. Sounds incredible when playing live.

Simon - 'Sometimes there's a time thing, and I have to look away (from the screens)' Otherwise means, Simon can casually play these complex parts whilst watching TV but very occasionally the extreme mental algebra he is doing requires a breif glance toward another member of the band.... Simon is literally the best.
@LoudPaul1
@LoudPaul1 Жыл бұрын
I think he meant that when the screens show video of him playing, there's a delay between that video and real life, so it would mess with his timing if he kept watching that.

It’s always interesting to see the difference in others (not just pros anyone for that matter) drum kits and contrast and compare to your own, for instance my hats are almost at my chin when I play lol I couldn’t imagine having them low enough that they become almost a second snare in placement rather where I have it’s almost like an accent crash.
@LoudPaul1
@LoudPaul1 Жыл бұрын
It really depends on if you play open-handed or crossed. You'll see that almost all open-handed players have their hats nice and low.
