Another great DVD release featuring Simon Phillips on drums, called 'Lee Ritenour & Mike Stern Live at the Blue Note Tokyo'. The DVD features two extra 'drum cam chapters' offering you a unique view of Simon playing the songs 'Smoke 'n' Mirrors' and 'Big Neighborhood'.
Definitely a must have for the SP fans. The DVD can be ordered at CDjapan: www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=VQBD-50002

Hahaha yeah i know. I'm grown up right handed, played it for 7 years. (Im 15 years now haha) But since 1 year, basically because of Simon Phillips, i started to play openhanded. or atleast, i made a beginning (if that's proper english??) But now after a year, i almost can play everything i want (Love to play along with Toto and Simon Phillips' CD's !). Cheers :)

There's only so much you can do with such a basic rock beat. This was Simon trying not to get bored out of his wits, I think.

Although Simon is a great drummer, with loads of technichal skills, in this particular tune I am not totally convinced; surely he displays an array of chops, but sometimes he exceeds the needs of the song with some overplaying (the use of rolls for example), and even falls out of time, in some situations. Once again I have to say that Simon is incredible and a master, in what open-hand playing is concerned, but in this tune I think he perhaps negleted its main feature, that is the GROOVE. I must say I rather prefer Dave Weckl´s approach, in this same tune, and the power that you can feel, in his playing. But that is only my opinion, based in my feeling, and of course I could be wrong. We know that they both are great drummers, with fine taste in drum language. I like their work, in each environment they create.

I must begin by asking if you are a drummer or a musician, in terms of speaking; in my comment, I began by saying that Simon Phillips is an extraordinary drummer. I do believe so, and I am familiar with his work for some 30 or more years. I am now recalling what he did with Stanley Clarke, in his album "Schooldays" wich, overall speaking, is a good album, but even today, I am not shure whether it was Stanley - or someone else - who wanted that album to be more "rock orientated". On the other hand, If you listen to Stanley´s first album, you´ll find it is a masterpiece, and a revolutionary breakthrough, in what "FUSION" is about. You will find one of the most exceptional drummers of all time ( Tony Williams) featuring drumming parts - for me he´s the greatest - and you will recognise the angle I approached, when I referred to the main feature of such displays, in this kind of music, that is the GROOVE. Now referring to the tempo, and if you are a musician, you should check out this tune (Big neighborhood) and be aware in minutes (5:53), (6:13) and (6:26), to realise that Simon´s overplaying doesn´t comply with tempo boundaries. In my home country we have a saying that goes "that was not REALLY necessary". Again, Simon is a terrific drummer - TOTO knew what I am talking about - because replacing Jeff Porcaro is no easy task. But I still urge you to hear Dave Weckl´s approach to this very same tune. And last, but not least, this tune, performed by Lee Ritenour and Michael Stern, is somehow slower in bpm, than the one performed by Dave Weckl. In this case, it works better, and it makes ALL the difference. Keep on the good music, for I will always keep on drumming. That´s part of my life and the reason why happines does exist.
