Little known fact regarding longer lenses creating a thinner depth of field: using a shorter focal length lens of the same aperture, but moving closer so that your subject is the same size in the frame, the depth of field is the same!

These are some great tips. When I started my photography journey, I bought an entry-level camera and spent the majority of my money on learning so I did a diploma in photography. The great thing was my assignments made me test all these settings and I had a professional photographer as my tutor correcting me on my settings, light and photography.

Simon, I'm a subscriber and always enjoy your videos and have learned a lot from you. It is very rarely that I hear you say something that is wrong or just doesn't pass the logic test. However, at around 2:30 you said, "small f-number lenses with large apertures are called fast lenses. That's because they collect photons faster and can take faster shutter speeds because they don't need to capture as much light." I know I'm probably picking nits here, and I understand the point you're trying to make, but technically, a large aperture doesn't collect photons "faster" it just collects more photons in any given time period. Photons are massless particles that move at the speed of light (in a vacuum) so the speed at which photons are collected is constant. The reason a larger aperture lens can use a faster shutter speed isn't because they don't need to capture as much light, it's because, given that more photons are being collected, the lens shutter doesn't need to be open for as long in order to capture the required amount of light for proper exposure. Otherwise, great video.

Even though I've had an SLR for some time now, I've realized how little I really used it. No more just putting it on F11 or F8 and hoping for the best. Thanks !! This clears up a lot of questions I have about aperture. I'm using a 70-300mm lens with Fstops 4.5-6.3 in mildly low light to get morning pics of hummingbirds at the feeder that hangs in the shade of a large tree behind my house. Distance from camera to subject is about 25 feet. The pics come out pretty good but not super crisp like I would like them to be. I'll try experimenting with smaller apertures to see what happens !

When I use Aperture priority, we do the work around to use for instance a set 200 ISO. We can do this on both the Nikon D5300 and the Sony A73. This helps alot when I am using Aperture priority but the ISO is higher then I want and it truly changes the sharpness on the image without the noise! High ISO settings tend to be noisy on both cameras when it gets set too high in the priority mode. Its a great work around to improve the image quality. If you set the ISO too low to work with the aperture set on priority mode, it simple won't take the picture. So its a practice shot before using it at times. Well work using and my husband was setting up both cameras the other day with this......I got the clearest Raven shots and a very far off eagle shot as well. So to confirm, the cameras both set the shutter speed only by doing this.

I learned about aperture as a kid this way: Make a fist and leave a small opening and look through the opening at something in the distance. What you're looking at will appear sharper than if you weren't using the "fist viewer." Now gradually widen the fist opening and you will see the object in the distance become less sharp.

Thanks a lot for this video, Simon. I'm sure this will guide a lot of people into shooting manual settings! Videos like this would have saved me so much frustation when I started all the years ago. :D Greetings from germany.
