I hope you are all enjoying those puppies, they are so much fun compared to how big a pain in the butt they can be :) I did the same thing before getting my dog, I watched a lot of dog training videos like this and "It's me or the dog"/"Dog whisperer". it's one thing to see it in video, it's another to deal with that furry love ball. My puppy is crazy about sticks and balls, and I'm struggling to show people how well behaved she is, because at home alone she's a little angel, but once people start looking she acts all smug and doesn't want to listen to me (yet only tries to play with me and ignores people ) still drop it or let go can be hit or miss. I think I would have gone crazy if I didn't watch/read all this info before hand, coming from owning 3 cats for 16 years, that little thing is another world. Yet she's been able to learn something from my cat(the one that is acting more like a dog), introduction went so much better then expected, instead of stressing about the cats and how they would react, I focused all my energy on her and teaching her that cats are not toys. and I used food to lure my one calm cat so she could sniff and watch him beg nicely for treats on to legs :) eventually she mimmiked him and stood up on tool legs begging for treats

I found a reference to the book 'Mine!' on one of your videos. Just wanted to say thankyou, I used it to design training activities to work on my older dog being less reactive to our new dog around food, and so far so good. The new dog ate some cheese off the floor next to my older dog whilst he was eating this morning, and we didn't get more than a glance in his direction. I'm always amazed at the behaviours people live with when they could tackle them with the right info. Great channel as ever, thanks!

THANK YOU SO MUCH. I was doing everything but hiding the toy, it immediately helped when I did. It makes sense since he was getting frustrated and wanted both treat and toy, just very conflicted (same for tugging the toy!). Tried with a different toy as well and it worked great. Even removed the lure and edible treat towards the end of the session and he dropped the toy and showered him with verbal praise and pets instead. TY!! ToT

I now feel like a pro. I just started fostering (with intent to adopt), and every now and then, she won't let go of the tennis ball, even with the treat. I literally got her over the living room to grab a tennis ball, dental bone and have the treat all for her. It took a minute or two of waiting it out, but she let go and received praise.

@@SimpawticoDogTraining you rock! When i was a kid i was lucky. I had a cousin that trained police dogs. I learned how to train from him. I have a shichi. That will tell me if someone does drugs. I love it. I dont like drugs so training it has been fun. I kniw know who does drugs and they can nit lie about it. Yep had to let people go that i never suspected were doibg drugs. My reason for hating drugs stems from my brother getting killed after getting in a car nit knowing there was drugs in the car. The driver knew but he didnt. When a cop tried to pull him over fir speeding, he tried to out run the cop. Flipping the car. Killing my little brother. The driver servived.

I so agree with tug. It is a staple for my Rottwielers. It’s fun to let them tug with each other. I just got a new puppy, Millie, and Gage is already playing tug with her. I have the same rules as you. They get to “Win”, sometimes, but he must be gentle and release when I say so. I never did use treats. I think I will start saying drop it instead of let go.

The minute my dog sees a treat, he will completely lose all interest in the tug toy. He will not "take it", will concentrate his eyes on my hands waiting for a treat. He will do "take it" or "leave it" if I refer to the treat but not to the toy. In fact, he will try all other commands like "down" or "high five" but will absolutely pay no mind to the toy. It's frustrating.

We have trained some drop it, and it's a bit reluctant with toys. Recently we were out on a walk and my dog was of the leash walking maybe 10m ahead of me. I see her going down in to the ditch and picking something up and going back up on the road, it turns out to be part of a animal ribcage. I ask her to release it, and she does it at once. Was a very proud dog-mom.

This is GREAT stuff! Trying these techniques out on our St. Bernard puppy today. Question: if the latency period is too long (like they just aren't getting that "drop it" and reward are connected), can you do anything else to shorten it? Should we get an even better irresistible treat?

getting a doberman puppy soon. Trying to prepare everything so I can train him properly especially since Dobermans are seen as an “aggressive breed” I feel it’s necessary to make sure he’s a good boy so people can see what they’re really like
