Simple Dill Pickles Using Simple Ingredients!
Dill Pickles
-8 lbs cucumbers
-3/4 cup sugar
-1/2 cup preserving salt
-1 quart water
-1 quart vinegar
-Dill
-Garlic
-Grape leaf (optional)
Prepare cucumbers, wash them under cold water, or let them sit in ice bath until ready to use. Use whole, cut into spears or slices. Combine sugar, salt, vinegar, and water in a large pot, bring mixture to a boil, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Put a piece of dill in the bottom of jar along with 1 clove of garlic. Pack cucumbers into jar, put another piece of dill and a garlic clove on top. Ladle hot pickling liquid over pickles until your 1/2 inch from top. Put lid and ring on jar. Water bath for 15 minutes. Let jars cool for 24 hrs. Remove ring, store in cool dark place.

I just “found” a mess of cucumbers that are waaaay too big. Some I’ll feed to the chickens but not sure what to do with the big ones that haven’t turned yellow. I have had minimal success making pickles. So hard to keep up with it all. I will pick and come in exhausted then leave them till the next day or maybe more so now I know I need to pick and then handle the right away. Thanks so much for this video. I think I’ll see if some are good to make spears and try your recipe. Love love love this channel.

We have a few pickling cucumbers starting to come in now so if I can get enough fresh ones at once I will try doing a jar. I usually try and do a whole big batch but it is hard to get them especially if I don't plant enough. Put in a patch of winter squash today, had to plow new ground to do it and made a bunch of yellow jackets unhappy. I have never planted as much stuff as this year.

Love you guys videos...the thing you called dill sprigs are called dill weed and it is awesome on fish baked in oven with lemon and 1 can of evaporated milk, bake at temp 350 for 25 minutes, northern fish is the best try it you will be amazed...called creamed fish. cut off a little bit of that blossom end and they be crispier..

Megan those squash blossoms make a great edible treat. What I do is put a little cream cheese in them, moisten the outside very very little after rolling them up them dust them good with corn startch and shallow fry over higher heat in butter oil mix (your homemade lard should work great ) until golden brown. Careful they will be hot inside but very good

It’s like planting by the signs, but doing things in the right signs are for more than just planting. So the signs refer to a body part, ex today we were in the feet, as long as the sign isn’t in the bowels you can make pickles and they shouldn’t be mushy. Another example is burying fence posts, if done in the wrong sign you won’t have enough dirt to fill back in the hole around the post, I know it sounds wild but I’ve seen it happen. The signs are on the calendar of the farmers almanac and some Raymond brownie calendars. It’s a deep rooted tradition in this area, my papa wouldn’t even cross the road if the signs wouldn’t right, ha! So it’s something I’ve been taught over the years and am also trying to relearn things I have forgotten.
