I wish I had seen this earlier as I went and bought a collapsible macro defuser which has an elastic collar on it and is designed for the large hot shoe flash guns, brilliant idea though

Great Tutorial! Newbie here. Is it really necessary to buy an external flash for macro? Or the built in flash is enough?

As long as it gets you enough light for your purpose, the built-in flash should be good.

@@mikelevyonline I bought a 60e flash and it is TERRIBLE. I wish I read your comment earlier, everyone is saying 'buy a flash, it's essential', and when following your advice, it looks so much nicer than with my external cheap flash... thank you for your tutorial

You could also try cutting up a plastic milk jug.
