Simple DIY Internal Drum Mic Clips

I wanted to be able to mount my drum mics inside the drum and I figured there must be an inexpensive way to do it. I discovered that modified pipe clamps from the plumbing or electrical section of your box store could be used. Now I've got most of my mics hidden inside the drums, and the stands out of my way. This is how I did it.

Nice solution! For double headed drums, you could remove one XLR connector from the mic cable, run the cable through the vent hole on the drum, and then solder the XLR connector back on. That way, you wouldn't have to drill any extra holes in the drum.

Thank you for your video. I have done the same, even down to the painting of the pipe clips and now I cannot wait for covid to bugger off so I can gig with my new quick set up.

Ha! Yeah, this quarantine is getting old. Hope the clips work well for you too. I've been playing with them for some time now and they've all stayed tight in place.

Go check out Randall May internal micing system. They’ve got a drill less solution for running xlr’s through the drum’s port. Nice work man

They have continued to work well for me. The only downside is that with smaller toms you may find the mic too close to the head.

Thanks for the video, very interesting. I plan to do the same on my toms, however I have also the reso head to deal with. I was wondering if you somehow have had experience on how it sounds with also reso head on. tks

When you are miking this close to the batter head, it's mostly that head which comes through. It's going to be a "dry" recording without much ambience from the rest of the drum, or the room. The upside of that is that you get a fairly isolated track for each drum and you can add EQ and reverb or other affects later in your DAW. The downside is that you will not get a live room sound or much of the resonant head, which can sometimes be desirable. In your case the resonant head will still do it's job of controlling batter head tone and decay, but what you will be recording is mostly the batter head. I'd say this style of miking is appropriate for rock, fusion, electric country, and other pop styles but probably not so good for acoustic jazz or other acoustic oriented music.

Sound difference and EQing making cuts since the mics are now pointed upwards ?

The cardioid pattern of the mics means that they pick up sound essentially where they are pointed, with a little bit of pick up off axis. So it makes no difference if they are pointed up or down. However, being mounted inside the drum means that they may pick up a little more resonance inside the shell, and the shell itself helps isolate the mic from the sound of the other drums.
