About Simple Little Life:
This channel has sort of turned (inadvertently) into a knife making channel. But the original idea behind what we wanted it to be is this description below:
Videos on our journey to homesteading. With a recent purchase of a little piece of the Alberta prairie, we're looking to sell our nice suburban home in search of a more meaningful life beyond chasing the "American dream" working for some big company and making someone else rich. It's not about the money, it's about getting the most value from the work I do to improving the life of my family.
Some preparedness, DIY, building quality things with your hands, guns, gear, and outdoor exploration.

Quick note to those thinking of building one of these. Before you set the screws for the hinges in the back, compress it with clamps and then set the screws so that when you are clamping the front, the same pressure is also at the back.

Thats what I was thinking anyway. You need to set the clamps so it already creates pressure when you fold it. Otherwise it will only press in the front.

If you tape paper towel around the foam, it will help protect the foam from the heat and extend its life considerably. I know it might not be the greatest solution, but its certainly helped preserve my molding foam in sheath making.

I know this is a 7 -8 year old video, BUT... you might also consider using baker's Parchment Paper to help protect the foam from the heat.

4 steel pins anchored in the lower block sliding free in the upper and 2 ratcheting tie down straps with two alignment guides per strap (one on each block) on each side in proper position. fast and easy and allows for ANY thickness so you can do knife sheaths to revolver holsters, and if needed you can forgo strapping with weighs or sliding clamps since the pins keep everything lined up

Kydex is for rookies! I am returning the leather ... Kydex has scratched all my blades that came with it as standard. Some expensive blades now have Kydex damage !!! The hinges are going to apply an amount of pressure in the back and that pressure is determined by how much pressure is in the front, so it's just how the press is designed that keeps even pressure

what i don't like about this press model, is that the hinges won't allow for equal and uniform pressure over the piece you are working with, you will always have more pressure towards the front when the clamps go, which results in more defined impression where more pressure is applied.

+Joseph Rector I think it's actually called a debuting tool. I believe that even Home Depot and other places are starting to carry them now. I think there are some that are being sold under the General tool name. An essential tool for all kinds of projects in the shop. I lost mine for a few day last month and realized just how much I use it all the time. I have some cheapos that work fine but if you can find the original Vargus brand that are made in Israel, those are noticeable better than all the other ones out there. I've had that yellow Vargus for over 15 years now and it's like an old friend to me. www.vargus.com/shaviv/ www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1/188-9193253-2436947?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=deburring+tool

Hey I'm on a SIMPLE youtube binge right now and LOVED your youdube on Dysen recharger repair (!! ) Do you think that lining the heat resistant foam for kydex press with foil would help keep it from retaining deforming marks after pressing the hot kydex? Also I found the knife making tools vid helpful thank you!. What small aluminum part or block could be used to make the sander? \
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife 8 жыл бұрын
+Julia Mahaffey Hey Thanks Julia! I never thought of lining it with foil, but that's a good idea. I'm going to have to try it next time, thanks! For the sanding block I used a piece of 2" X 3" aluminum (if I remember correctly) but was also thinking of maybe making it out of hardwood like maple or something. The bummer with wood is that I would worry about it swelling and deforming if when wet-sanding. Cheers!
@jstenuf
@jstenuf 8 жыл бұрын
+Simple Little Life I see that Amazon does sell Aluminum Block for milling. I enjoy working with hardwood and some of your hard maple would be perfect . . . you are right that you might get swelling depending on how long you used it wet, whether you coated it with poly, etc. Another option would be stabilized wood. There are many good youtube instructions for stabilized wood. Corian? Maybe . . . I'm studying today on how to make a knife that is light enough for backpacking and substantial enough for bushcraft. Thanks for your help!
@Simplelittlelife
