How I bend wood at home.
Instead of going through the hassle of building a wooden box to steam bend wood, I decided to use a 200mm (8"), thick wall irrigation pipe. Made the whole process quick and easy.
The pipe I used is 2.5m (8ft) long as I am planning on bending longer pieces of wood in the future.
Used an old 20L (5 gal.) oil drum I cleaned up and filled with water to generate the steam needed to bend the wood.
To feed the steam from the steam generator to the steam box I used a piece of silicone type pipe.
Everything held up well considering the heat associated with generating and using steam.
Visit woodworkjunkie.com for more.
SAFETY FIRST
Remember, generating steam in an enclosure can cause an explosion. If you build a steam box always add a pressure release hole for steam to escape.

The first half of the kzfaq.infoUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.

For anyone else looking to try this, get another big pvc pipe and pre soak your wood for a few days prior to steaming it. Decreases steam time and makes it way more flexible. Have fun everyone!

I worked on a project once with a master carpenter. It was a deck which wrapped around an above-ground swimming pool in which we needed to bend the rim joists to give the deck a rounded effect. We used a ~7 foot long piece of 10x2 pine and needed to bend it right in the middle around 25 degrees. He started by making some skill saw cuts real close together in the middle, around half the thickness of the 10x2. Then, he soaked it in the pool itself for maybe an hour while we got lunch. When we came back, he tacked one end of the rim joist to a post, then at the second post, which hit the middle of the 10x2, beeeent it until it the end came into contact with the last post. Anyways, I never knew how it was professionally done until I saw this video. Good stuff, thanks for posting!

For more extreme bending be sure and keep your jig and clamps close to your steam box. Don't give the wood any extra time to cool before bending. I've used this method before. Works like a champ. Good video.

Suggest using a shorter hose, the hose will fill with condensate due to the loop you have. Letter the hose go from the steam chamber back down into the bucket allows that condensate to drip back into the bucket and re-heat. Also, if you insulate the pipe, you will have more steam in the pipe and less water + hot air.

To aid in sped, make one end of your bending jig fixed. Where you slide the end into the it and then only pull on one end, this makes it faster and gives less time for the wood to cool otherwise great job

One time I used 4 inch SDR drainage pipe instead of building a real box. Pipe literally turned into a piece of spaghetti and flattened out, total fail. I’m sure schedule 40 Cpvc would be ok since the temp rating is way higher, lesson learned. If your at a point in wood working your bending wood just build the damn steam box. Also don’t use metal stove pipe. That grossly stained the wood. Another good one was I used rubber roofing and sewed a hem on one side and just laid it out flat with a small opening on each end to vent and for the steam hose, that was very effective and you can roll it up and stash it out of the way for the next time you use it in 4 years, you can get a decent steamer on Amazon for 50 bucks. great job👍👍

Nice. I watched a guy steam heat and bend a buffalo horn to put on a walking stick here on YT. He was a Brit. He used a heat gun during the process to keep the horn hot after taking it out of the steamer. Interesting process. St. Augustine Lighthouse has a working and ongoing boat building project. They use a steam box to prep wood for bending for use in their boat projects.

Add a pressure release valve to your big tube, if the tube is allowed to build steam pressure it will penetrate the wood deeper and faster. The pressure release valve will keep your setup from building too much pressure so you will be able to operate it safely.

I'm doing the opposite, not bending, straightening. As I got a load of sprung beds slats for next to nothing (Faceblah marketplace, gumtree), thin softwood and very clean, going to be used for plantation style window blinds. I had this idea in mind so good to see it working, I might use a pressure cooker steam release valve and less flex pipe from the heater.

Awesome video sir... really gives me some good starting ideas for such a build. I especially like that it has little to no chance of blowing up and taking out the woodworker and family! As you can see in the comments there are some decent suggestions to improved and evolve this over time. The only thought / suggestiion I thought of when watching was to perhaps use another material for the wood support rods, not wood dowels which would likely bend over time. I look forward to trying this. Cheers!

Should have probably put the pressure release hole at the other end of the pipe so the steam gets to travel the whole length of the pipe before exiting although it would probably condensate on the other side. Anyway it is a great idea and thanks for sharing it!

I would guess the pressure from the steam would cause it to spread somewhat uniformly throughout the tube before exiting the release hole. If the hole was too large however I could see what you're saying. Which brings me to an idea....adding a pressure release valve (like on a water heater) so that more steam and pressure can be used to penetrate the wood. Could be an explosive hazard if not done right but hey, life is short...live a little. :)

I’ve never tried to steam bend wood. But now you have inspired me! For the spring back, I’m wondering how one might adjust the amount of over-bending to get the right amount after spring back. I will try a sample bend, then measure the amount of spring back relative to the jig, then change the jig clamping blocks at least the amount of spring back, perhaps even a little more. Do you think I should use exact measurements or go by percentage of spring back and make calculations for the clamping block locations? In any case, plenty of experiments ahead, eh?

Look up Mike Dunbar- he has this style steam box without all the ill-informed methods. (BTW Softwood isn’t a good choice for bending because it does not have the same lignin binding as certain hardwoods, and the fibers aren’t up to the task...)
