We're so glad that gouache is being more widely adopted by fine artists, after long being considered an illustration and design medium. It really has so much presence and such a beautiful surface, and after you get used to the re-wetting, slight color change upon drying, and dark colors persisting through light ones on top, those qualities actually become great advantages, and a way to achieve subtle transitions and suave surfaces! It's great to see this extremely worthy medium in action here, with such an excellent artist and instructor. Thanks, Jenna!

I'm actually switching and redoing my old acrylic paintings into have since they represent similarly but I've seen Gouache paintings that have stood the test of time where as acrylic still has to prove it's longevity.

Plus it's much more environmentally friendly compared to acrylics as gouache is not made from plastic!

Gouache is such a versatile medium, I mostly see it used in its opaque form like acrylic, but as you’ve shown with that gorgeous flower, it really is beautiful by using wet on wet and treating it more like a watercolour, it’s also really fun 😊

I've just began painting with gouache myself and I'm enjoying it so much now that I've gotten my consistency perfect. Please more flowers would love to see roses, anemonies and a field of wild flowers. The peony you just did was one of the best I've seen with gouache.

I just came back from my Opus Art Store with a set of 10 Windsor and Newton Gouache and a new Brush Washer & Palette Combo for them. I can’t wait to use them. I have been wanting to try Gouache for sometime, but after watching your video this morning, and watching Sara Burns videos, I knew I had to try some! Thanks, 🤗🇨🇦

I was desperately trying to make my Gaouche paintings look like graphic art (how they get those vintage National Park posters to be so perfectly smooth!) and almost gave up on the medium. Thanks for all your help, Jenna, as always!

Have you tried acrylic gouache? It might be hopeful for that type of art you speak of. Like the perfect marriage between traditional gouache and acrylic. It can be watered down and when layered (dry between layers) it doesn’t reactive the bottoms layer. It dried flat and matte. The only difference between traditional gouache and acrylca gouache is that the second doesn’t reactivate with water once dry. I think you’d really get the vintage national poster looks with them!!! Holbein and turners is my favorite brand for acrycla gouache. Holbein, m. Graham, and Winsor and newton for traditiona gouache

Hullo Jenna, I always used gouache to do illustrations that went right into the trash after they were photographed! To see them used more like watercolors is very interesting! I enjoyed watching you use them so freely! i was taught that gouache was a non permanent medium! Yet the pigments are the same, so why would they be less archival? I do hope you continue to show your viewers how to get going with gouache and perhaps show a beginners palette and color choices that are not as easy as watercolors! I have recently purchased the Embrace Opacity Palette from DaVinci curated by Denise Soden. Have you tried any of these paints? Do you like to use opaque watercolors or only gouache for your opaque works? I hope you have a chance to create a video on some of these other palette ideas and venture into these other smaller brands, Without breaking the bank! DaVinci Paints are just the best and very reasonably priced for professionally quality paints! Oh! You asked for subjects? Why not some jellyfish?

Just found Gouache which I became curious about after reading a book on art in various museums. I'm struggling with not using my Gouache like I do my watercolors, since my brain is thinking they are acrylics, which I refuse to use due to archival issues. I'm a Sumi-e artist by trade and watercolorist for fun. Working in black ink I appreciate black and it's values, but OMG the depth of black Gouache is breathe taking.

Those both looked really pretty. Do you use the same brushes here that you use for watercolor? If my gouache is the gouache/acrylic kind, should I get separate brushes? I just ordered it so I'm not sure how well it will clean up. Do you ever paint cats? I would like that - or birds.
@lisaspears8974

Cheap brushes for acrylic because if acrylic dries it's permanent. And acrylic gouache is acrylic that dries with a matt finish that resembles gouache. I dries faster than watercolors, and use a disposable palette or something that u don't care about because if u get it clean, it won't be easy or guarenteed.

Yes agree having used both types of gouache do not use expensive brushes with acrylic gouache….especially if you are out in the field painting where you can’t properly deep clean them. I use foil to line or wrap round my palettes when using acrylic gouache…otherwise they “weld” themselves on. It doesn’t was out of clothes either ( guess how I know that?)

Hey Jenna, do you have some tips on colour theory and brush techniques specific to Gouache? I noticed you have a book on this dedicated to Water Colour but I'm not sure how much of it is applicable to gouache, maybe about 50%? Would be great if you could share something specific to gouache. Thanks for the great videos!

Daniel Smith has this watercolour ground medium that you can use on canvas, which allows the canvas to have the same characteristics as watercolour paper. So you can do wet in wet techniques etc. so yeah gouache can be used on canvas 👍

Hi Jenna, you were saying that you first paint a lighter layer of the guache and then add some darker dimensions! I was wondering when layering the darker dimensions, instead of guache can watercolor of darker pigment be added on it? Doing so, will the watercolor dissolve too much into the guache?

They play well in the same painting. In fact they play so well together that I've colored by white gouache with my watercolors to make sure I liked to look before buying a set but that's a more expensive way. Good Gouache is about 25% less than the same size and brand tube of watercolor. When believe it or not gouache has more pigment per tube And that's what makes them apaque. With its recent upswing in popularity I wouldn't doubt if that changes in the near future but I hope I'm wrong .
