I usually read blogs before I attempt a new craft. There are always specific terms and language to help you find what you're looking for. For example, this recipe is an example of "Cold Process" which is one of the four major types, and it is one of the only ones to use Lye which is harmful if misused. Other types are Melt and Pour, Hot Process, and Rebatching.

We appreciate your acknowledgement of the source of your recipes, and actually showing us the book. Palm oil is cheaper than coconut and olive oils, but can be substituted by other oils because of environmental concerns. Also, it is good to see a vegan recipe...no mention of tallow (eek, ugh!). The video is very very good.

Joseph thanks, Joseph. i had no idea that orang utan had such an interesting meaning. yes, of course, other flora and fauna are effected, too. :( China has a way to go as far as animal welfare is concerned. i guess one always thinks of amurica being the worst as far as business people caring about anything except getting rich no matter what. caring about the welfare of regular working people seems to be so low on the list, especially now with orange horror in Washington!!!! have a great day. :) 🐈🐾🦅🦆🦘🦒🦉🐄🐝🦇🦈🦍🐘🐒🌿🌱

You would be safer using a plastic pitcher(#5 or higher) or stainless steel for the lye mixture. Glass is know to randomly shatter when you least expect it from the stress of the lye temps. I've seen that all over the lessons on the internet so just trying to keep soapmaking newbies safe. I've always used stainless steel....absoutely no aluminum soapers, NONE!

@@onemig00 I have heard from soapers say that Pyrex can and has shattered. And if your Pyrex glass container doesn't shatter on you, you should be aware that the lye solution etches away at the glass over time. Where does the glass pieces go? Yep, in your bar of soap!

Mine isn’t hardening. It’s all mushy in the silicone mold after two days. Is it because the oils weren’t hot enough when I added the water/lye mixture? Is there anything I can do to save this squishy soap? I’m editing to add that I’ve used this recipe twice now and both times it came out all squishy and mushy. I was able to save one batch by re batching it but the other batch is still squishy. I’m positive I got the measurements right. Could the problem be that I’m using an enamel coated cast iron pot? I’ve heard you should use a stainless steel pot but I don’t have one.

(A lot of what I'm about to say is based on what I've seen on free online soap calculators.) Most of the time, with a couple, maybe a few exceptions, the fats/oils/butters that will clean you if you make soap out of them generally are not good skin conditioners and vice versa. e.g. palm oil will not clean you (but makes a good skin conditioner), and palm KERNEL oil WILL clean you, but, like coconut oil, is drying on the skin. In fact, for the purpose of making soap, palm kernel oil and coconut oil are very similar in ways. Not all oils will clean you, some do, same with butters and tallow. 5 animals and 1 set of animals will NOT clean you; 2 animals will. The 5 animals that will not clean you (and so therefore are good conditioners) are: 1.cow 2.deer 3.bear 4. pig, hog 5.rabbit The set of animals is fowl. The two animals that will clean are a goat and a sheep; lamb, the goat doing a slightly better job. I think I should mention aloe butter here, because of the butters that clean, it seems to be the only butter not made from rare exotic ingredients coming from parts of plants that only grow in C. or S. America, and is affordable by most. I myself am a fledgling soapmaker. I guess at this point I can't honestly say that I've actually made soap, because what I've created so far isn't done curing. My first batch was basically just an auto knowledge and skills test. For that trial, I only used one mold. That got cut up into sample sized bars. After my second batch, I know my recipe by heart. It's made up of mostly beef and pig tallow for conditioning with some coconut oil for cleansing. So it's formulated to be a shower bar, not hand soap. For my liquid, I use rain. It is now late May and I figure my bars'll be nice and concentrated by the time I give them as Christmas gifts.

Any soap combined with water will clean your skin. Corporations have convinced people that soaps are not good for the skin and this in turn has created a situation that a new soap industry popped up offering some new type of special super duper soap. It is like the crap you hear in advertisements about renourishing hair that just happens to be a dead cell anyway. All soaps will clean you.

So if i was to add 1 pound of blackseed oil to the original formula it would be 9Ibs oil, 532.125g of Lye and 3.375 Ibs of water?
