The FI light on our Kawasaki is much like the check engine light on your car. If it comes on it is real easy to check the code, and for the bike to tell you what is up. Just ground the diagnostic wire and it will start reading them out. Mine just had one code, but it will read out as many as you have. Then you can know what to address to potentially fix issues with the bike. There are more than this, but below are some basic codes to work with.
Service Codes FI Indicator Light (LED) Problems
11 Main throttle sensor malfunction, wiring open or short
12 Inlet air pressure sensor malfunction, wiring open or short
13 Inlet air temperature sensor malfunction, wiring open or short
14 Water temperature sensor malfunction, wiring open or short
15 Atmospheric pressure sensor malfunction, wiring open or short
21 Crankshaft sensor malfunction, wiring open or short
23 Camshaft position sensor malfunction, wiring open or short
24 Speed sensor malfunction
31 Vehicle-down sensor malfunction, wiring open or short
32 Subthrottle sensor malfunction, wiring open or short
34 Exhaust butterfly valve sensor malfunction, wiring open or short
35 Immobilizer amplifier malfunction
36 Blank key detection
51 Stick (Ignition) coil #1 malfunction, wiring open or short

This is such a great video Tutorial!!!!!👍 This showed me how to pull the code on my 2007 Vulcan 900 Classic LT! Wow, really great presentation!👌 The K VN900 under-seat wire to connect to is yellow, but the process is identical. I could not figure out from the instructions in the service manual how to do this, until you enlightened us with your instructions. I was then able to clear the code on the bike and for now the code 21 problem is resolved. It reminded me of the trip to Oz, but instead of tapping shoes together, we tap the ground terminal 5 times.😄 Some $ saved! Thank you, Far Reach Engineering!!!!!👏

Yep, and you haven't even seen the worst of it. It has had a rough life. It was stunted, stolen. given a crappy rattle can paint job after the theft to throw off the police. It was then abused (drive it like you stole it.) for about a year. It was then finally recovered by the police after a high speed chase which ended when the rider completely wrecked it. It was then returned to the owner as a shattered bike. That owner left it out in the elements. Since the gas tank was forced open (no key) being left out in the rain allowed rain water to collect in the tank. That lead to various engine issues as you could imagine. and that doesnt even touch on the electrical. I then bought it as a heap to see if I could revive it. Then with a little attention, I got it fired up and took it for a ride this Saturday. Zombike may have been left for dead. But undead it roams the streets again.

It's just a simple wire with an alligator clip on each end. Connect 1 side to the self diagnose terminal shown in video as a single plug, and then attach the opposite end to the ground for dealer mode. Or the tapping for dealer mode 2. I have a 04-05 zx10r and it does the same thing. Great video in my opinion

Thanks Zee. It was a pretty good price, at least one that made it worth me taking a chance on it. If nothing else, bringing it back to life reenforced to me that the zx6r family is a good group of bikes. As such I bought another 2005 zx6rr just last week. :)

Far Reach Engineering Awesome. Yeah the 636 is a beast! 05-06 is the best gen in my opinion. I know the zx6rr isn't a 636 though, wonder if it makes a noticeable difference or not, lol

zeelicious I agree, I favor the 05-06 as 636's as well. And you are right while Zombike here is a 636 my ZX6RR is a 599cc bike so it could be raced in the 600 class during those years. As for a difference, each bike I have (the ZX6R and the ZX6RR) are set up differently, so it is not a straight stock comparison,but the short of it is Zombike does feel quicker with a bit more torque than the zx6rr. That said, they are both awesome!

Aw that sucks. Pretty much those codes are like deciphering Morse code or something . Too bad bikes dont have OBD ii computers. I would have liked to replace the stock gauges with a small 3" computer creen.

CCCL350 That is true, It is almost like Morse. Let me know on the 3" screen. You may be able to get an app that can run an ipod as your gauges and you could bolt one in a housing as a display.

I have code 32 subthrottle issue. My rpm are limited to 7500 sometimes. What do you recommend to fix this???

Hey, thank for the info. If I can ask, my nephew dropped his 05 ZX-6R with me to replace the stator. He kinda left it with me so, a year later I decided to get the parts and just keep the bike. Anyway, I get no FI light illumination with key on and the bike won't start. Can't find any info for why the light wouldn't come on (besides burned out LED) Can this cause the bike not to start or is it just like a lamp driver on a car?

Hi far reach engineering, please help..... the Kawasaki mechanic removed the throttle body flaps, reason the bike would close power when trying throttle.. Please advise if I need a new throttle body altogether or.. Zx6r 06 model (Arata exhaust/power commander3/dynojet quick shifter) ** I'm reading error code 62/63**

Great vid man thanks, is there a way to turn off the FI light without fixing issue? I have mot tomorrow and just want to turn light off to see if bike will pass Mot. I stupidly unplugged lights/indicators with battery connected and think that is why my FI light has came on

I used a wire with two alligator clips. one at each end. simply attached one clip to the free open wire in the motorcycle harness. The other end can be clipped directly to the negative battery terminal.

Hello Dear friend, I have question about FI in to my zx6r 2007. There is aftermarket exhaus and FI show code 34. Question is, is it problem, or it is just a detail about exhaus change ?

Vladimír Studnička Code 34 is because they put in an aftermarket exhaust. Other than throwing a light, there is no problem with your bike. (the reason for the light is that the butterfly valve that was used in the stock exhaust, just isnt there in the aftermarket exhaust. not a big deal)

Hey man I did the self diagnostic and the codes I read out is 41, thetr are no codes in the number range so im just curious? The issue I have with my bike is when I go full throttle it doesn't put the power down properly so im lost

707, First I would suggest the possibility that you are not reading a 41, but in fact a code 32. (Not 4 longs and 1 short but actually 3 longs flashes and 2 shorts. sometimes the first of the short flashes can be confused with another one of the longs) And let me restate that I really think you are looking at a 32,and is a sub-throttle sensor. That said if you had a 41 my only guess would be similar to the Kawasaki 1500cc vulcan in which the 41 code is actually a fail safe mode in which code 41 is an error in Fuel injector #1 = so the ECU shuts off fuel injector #1 But double check the light. I think it more likely you have code 32. I hope this helps

i have the same problem and i pulled the code which is 63.. and i don't have the butterfly that goes under the seat! and aftermarket exhaust... please help!! 05 zx6r

Just as you mentioned, because you have an aftermarket exhaust, it means the butterfly valve no longer actuates, (because the stock exhaust is no longer there to actuate). That would normally give you a #34, but in your case, since the butterfly actuator was really doing nothing but adding weight it sounds as though someone took it out of your bike. And not having the butterfly actuator itself will give you a #63. ***#63 Exhaust butterfly valve actuator malfunction, wiring open or short***. So long as there is no wiring left exposed from the removal of the butterfly valve, it really is no big deal. Yes you will have an error code on your display, but your bike should still run fine and is in no danger from the code.

chris That is a good question. The short answer is to make it go away cleanly you would need to input something into your bike to give the output signal of the butterfly actuator and valve. Now that was easy to say, but I do not know if that requires a specific digital output in this place or if it is just as simple as completing the circuit. My thought is it likely has several changing outputs that would be needed. The reason I say this is because even if you put in a brand new actuator, your 63 would go away, but your FI light would stay on because you would then read a 34 because of the custom exhaust. Depending on how complicated, one solution could be to program an Arduino to give the feedback read from the butterfly system. My brother actually creates those that can replicate full LS1 engine systems so that full non-conventional engine swaps can be done without throwing codes and lights, but that fix is neither very cheap or easy. But there likely exists a cheaper/simpler way. But I'd have to think on it to say for sure. Maybe even just closing the circuit on those two items.

Hello man, i am about to buy a Z1000 1st generation and the FI light shows even when the bike is off i searched it on the internet about it . the bike doenst turns off by its own, the throttle is fine,the power is fine, yes he has after market exhaust maybe that is the problem? and if yes what i need to fix it. i noticed when i press the ignition button the bike starts a bit slowly, like i press it 1-2 sec to start it up

+joebmxx Yes. If its not red with you ride, or For instance if your bike is not flashing an erratic red light when you perform this then there is no reason to think it has any codes either. (note: a steady security blip when the bike is off is fine too, as that is a standard security feature)

How did you get the ignition switch out like that? Im having issues with mine....or did it just come like that from all the shit your bikes been theough?

The short answer is it was stolen, and came like that. The long answer is while I did not tear up this ignition system, if you wanted to simply replace your switch you should be able to unbolt the ignition switch from the bottom back side. That will release the switch for replacement. Then just buy another switch with key, off ebay and replace it. Hope that helps out to some degree.

Follow directions on my 2002 636 any it flashes FI but nothing came up... I my bike feels like it is misfiring.

The FI flashing is the code. No numbers will come up. It is sort of like Morse code. The FI light will flash in a pattern when in diagnostic mode. Did your FI light flash? If so what was the pattern?

I waited about a minute no pattern. I assume the only time I have seen the FI light even come on was when I tried grounds the wire. So all I am assuming is I entered Self Diagnostic mode?

John W The 2002 ZX636R (A1P) doesn't have fuel iinjection. It is effectively a J2 599cc model which was stroked to 636cc

disconnect the battery for 15 minutes. The code will disappear but it will come back if the error is still there.

Adrian Wilson I have not tried it on a zx14, but my expectation is that it would be the same. I would suggest having a look under the seat by the battery and if not there, also checking near the passenger seat. I do know that the zx14 has the 4 plug factory diagnostic port just like the 636 here. On the 636 the single diagnostic wire was right by that plug. If you can find that 4 prong plug, I bet the single wire will be right near by.

Far Reach Engineering I took the fuel pump unit apart and clean the filter and it run better but still cut out. I uploaded a video. I think there's another filter n side the body of the pump.

Egidijus Kibas The blinking with the key out is not a problem. That is a security feature to show that it is immobilized against theft. Now as for the light being on once you start it, you likely have a code that can be pulled to find out why the light is on when running. They are two separate items. The light blinking with the key out, is not a problem. The light on when running, is a problem. Which problem you will need to run the diagnostic code to get the answer.
