Guinevere (Vanessa Redgrave) sings about the simple joys as a maiden, then escapes her carriage to pray to Saint Genevieve while King Arthur (Richard Harris) spies from above. From the film Camelot (1967).

There was always something "different, not perfect", and yet "beautiful, elegant, mythic" about Venessa Redgrave. One of my favorite scenes in one of my favorite movies

Can you imagine if you first met your future husband when he was up a tree listening to you praying about how you could best escape from him and then he talks you into marrying him after *you* try to talk him into running away with you because you thought he was somebody else at first? 😍 It would be a rather interesting sort of "how we met" story. 😉

Exactly. I think this is deliberate foreshadowing on the part of Lerner and Loewe, but yes. They did a nice job with the foreshadowing. I often think of that when I listen to the "Guinevere" song. Got what you wished for earlier on, so be careful what you wish for. (She didn't really mean to *literally* make all those things happen!)

Exactly. There is a heavy irony in the fact that many of the things Guinevere wishes for in this song end up coming to pass later on when she's no longer a maiden even though she at that point didn't intend them to happen and doesn't want them to happen. Guinevere in this song is also making it clear that she's still very self-centered (as teenaged girls often are) because she shows no concern for the agony that these putative men are experiencing for her sake but only thinks about how much of a compliment it is that they would want to go through this in order to prove that they deserve her.

Overall I agree, this is hers. Julie Andrew's did good too but it just wasn't the same. Then again I am used to it the Vanessa Redgrave way so I am probably not going to like someone else's version as much. If you watch the clip on KZfaq of Julie Andrew's in "What Do the Simple Folk Do?" you can see that yes, she did act but it was a different kind of acting. Every actress who plays it makes the role her own in a different way. I think that they *both* felt it, acted it, sensed it, played it but just...not the same. To me Vanessa is the more lovable one in this particular role. I also think that a lot of us have gotten used to the movie versions instead of the stage versions, but it isn't only that. We are all entitled to our different favorites.

If you've ever noticed all the white, white, white in this scene. I know she is not exactly a pure lily white lamb *all* the time but in this scene she is about as innocent and virginal as we ever see her. Could be that's at least partly what all the whiteness is for in this scene.

I know but that's part of what's so cute about it. She doesn't even really *know* yet what she wants. She might be eighteen or older but she's still a baby about those sorts of things now. Julie Andrews originated the role for the stage. Richard Harris took over for Richard Burton. Unfortunately, that just the way Hollywood works...bring in bigger box office names to draw in a audience and revenue. Right or wrong, not going to change now. Julie Andrews got screwed out of My Fair Lady to. What are you going to do?

I've actually heard repeatedly that Julie Andrews and Richard Burton both voluntarily *turned down* the film roles in Camelot. Maybe they just both had already been offered other projects that they liked better? It does happen that way sometimes. Wish people would *stop* saying "got screwed over" and so on. Because it's (at least usually) not true. Besides. Go ask Julie Andrews if you *really* want to know. 😉😜😘

@@julistarling8382 - by the time the film was made, both Julie and Richard Burton were big stars. Burton wasn't interested in making the film but Julie would only do it if Burton was the co-star so turned it down. She really didn't care for Richard Harris after ructions when making 'Hawaii' with him. Harris in turn said he loathed her! Not good for screen chemistry, I surmise :)

I can believe feuds and fights for Vanessa Redgrave-she’s gorgeous, but, with all due respects, I could never believe it for Julie Andrews. Her looks are plain and ordinary. This is also why she didn’t get My Fair Lady. Onstage, her voice was sufficient for star billing because the stage doesn’t project on your face like the camera does.

I actually think Vanessa and Julie are quite comparable in looks but what separates them, for me, are their inner workings. Julie exudes grace and graciousness, which is very well, but Vanessa radiates worldliness, intellect and many other qualities which reach beyond the talents of Julie and so many actresses who have ever lived. Even Meryl Streep (who is overpraised anyway, in my humble opinion) couldn't compare. Vanessa is a true acting legend and one of my all-time favorites.

Er. Um. They're both beautiful but in different ways. And as to Julie Andrews supposedly being so unable to play sexy or something like some people are saying. She was never unable to play it that way, she just was not typically seen by audiences that way because she had a different and more innocent sort of reputation. It is also possible that different movies' casting directors just plain wanted different people and did not want to cast the same actress in every movie. Besides...tastes differ.

By 1966 director Logan wanted actors first before singers to make it more contemporary and more appealing to an audience that was literally in the civil rights anti-war movement. So it needed to be different from the stage version.

Vanessa Redgrave and Richard Harris brought the characters to life. They made their characters real human beings and not just polished operatic singers. I loved Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music. The part and her style suited it well. But Camelot needed Vanessa Redgrave and My Fair Lady needed Audrey Hepburn. I’m responding to a 3 year old comment but still…..
