Simple Luxury School Bus Camping

We rigged up a bunch of stuff to make the bus look nice and semi-functional for a camping trip. We installed a generator, hitch receivers front and rear, wired up for a winch, new tires, a memory foam mattress, bar fridge from the house, air conditioner... well you get the idea. This video was filmed at Minnow Lake Recreation Site in Alberta Canada. The mosquitos were bad, but it's a great campground for our needs. This school bus is going to be great for camping, but this is not exactly a professional or permanent setup for now. This is the beginning of 3 weeks of camping!

Love the bus! As a fellow owner of an old school bus (a 20 year old English school bus, in Scotland) I have a piece of advice from harsh experience, if you want it. Replace the Rubbers! I initially went around fixing the rust, and the rubber looked fine, but it was all perished! When I say Rubbers, I mean everything from window seals to tyres, but most importantly, perished rubber pipes in the fuel system let in air (particularly the 90° ones, hidden above the fuel tank) and can be replaced with inexpensive rubber hose and jubilee clips. Also replace all the belts (fan belts and timing belt, unless it has a chain) because one will eventually snap, and at the most inopportune moment imaginable.

When I was a child my dad made a 5 ingredient hobo meal. Potato, carrot, onion, hamburger meat, bacon and wrapped it all up in 2 layers of foil. Then cooked it in the coals of fire for about an hour. I made this a few years ago and it was better than what I remembered. I need to make it again. Thank you so much for reminding me about such good childhood times.

That is a really sweet set up! One thing you might want to consider is a low profile box spring to put under the mattress. It's how we roll in Canada, lol. Everything is expensive here and we pay high taxes, so we gotta shop smart. I'm the same, if it works and is half decent, good enough. Some high end stuff these days isn't worth the money anyway, they cheap out too, believe me. There's a guy here on KZfaq (another Canadian, AvE is the channel, who has shown that too) with tools etc. And some cheap stuff or middle of the road grade, is pretty decent sometimes, so the Chinese are sometimes stepping up their game too. Even the Germans, are cheaping out, go figure (they never did that before) to compete with the Chinese and therein lies the problem. The plethora of cheap goods from China, has lowered the quality of everyone's stuff, even them and they were known for high quality steel and engineering. The steel is still great, it's stupid things like triggers on tools they cheaped out on etc. Same with their cars etc. They used to be good, not so much anymore.

Hey Steve! As a former school bus driver in the US (I believe Canada has a similar law), you can get a ticket/fine if you own and operate a bus privately without changing or removing the word "School" from the outside stickers, AND changing the color of the bus. May want to look into that and weigh the risk/rewards of it. You should be fine so long as you don't make any cops mad though lol

Thank you Steve so much for posting camping in a bus. I have been searching for days on how to set up my Bus for camping. The only thing I can find are expensive reduce ripping out ceilings taking down walls putting up wood and all I want to do is camp inexpensively. Thank you thank you thank you you have given me many tips.

There are state parks here in East Texas you can check out. There are also camp grounds and boat docks if you want to fish and camp as well. Tyler State Park is a great area to camp and fish. I've been there many times to camp, fish and have family reunions. They keep it clean and very well maintained. So, I hope one day you can come down and check it out.☺️ Happy travels!🙂

Awesome video!! Been thinking of getting a small bus and converting it to a camper. Busses are incredibly well built. Heavy gauge metal all around. I remember when I was a firefighter/ rescue/ EMS , we had a vehicle rescue drill where we had to cut into a school bus to extricate Trapped occupants. Compared to a car or pickup, incredibly difficult. Busses are really built very tough.
