Without fucking mobile phones, without the internet. Back when this was released, the movie, only the truly rich kids, the %1ers, had internet. The rest of us had Sony Walkmens. The white chicks had puffy ass, sprayed, hair the size of afro's. To call your firends you had to use a pay phone. Do they even exist anymore outside of airports and train stations? Kids, us, we talked to one another on the school bus. No laptops, no phones. Today you would be lucky to even get a glimpse from a kid on a bus. I was 15 in 1985 when this was released.

This is actually the original version. The radio stations cut it down. The first time I heard this song was in 1984 on 97.7 CHOM FM Montreal, Quebec. I grew up in NY State, CHOM and WIZN 106.7 Vergennes, Vt were my stations.

brian chaput No, but making the charts regularly IS what would be considered worthy of recognition. Sure, every fan thinks his favorite band is worthy of more recognition. That doesn't mean they're going to get it if no one else likes their music. You get recognition for being good at something, and being good at making music is generally judged by how many people are willing to pay to listen to what you've performed. Everyone likes to believe that their work is worthy of special recognition. Doesn't mean it is.

GREAT comment and I simply could not agree more. All of these years later and I still remember walking to the movie theater with my 2 best friends on April 13, 1985, to see this movie. We were all 14 and freshman in high school and spring had sprung. It was a great time and this song STILL gets me EVERY time I hear it.

They often mess up the better, extended remix, as heard here with the intro that detracts rather than enhances it. Should've/could've been better than the original to bother making it but alas, this happened fairly often, with the "better" extended mixes in the wrong remixer's hands.

hahahaha...own it, all of John Hughes movies. Can see him putting the earing in and walking away at the end of the day from detention...can see all of the movie. Probably in my top five movies.

One of Scotland's contributions to the International music scene. Glasgows own Simple Minds. This song sums up, for me , the 1980's.. Of course it was used in movie & TV show soundtracks. But the first time I heard it on the Superior body rocking sound system @ Rich's nightclub, 2401 San Jacinto, Houston,TX 77002, was an experience that will never leave me. This song would get the crowd MOTIVATED - numerous lip- synchers would turn into "stars" right there on the dance floor. It was fricking awesome...

Lucky you Herc, lucky me too though. I was a travelling semi hippy, Weedgie when I first heard this in Oz. Loved it (the music which SM never wrote of course) but I can’t bare the movie, it’s one of the most irritating, white, schmaltsy, privileged pieces of film ever made.

M.M., this isn't the true 12" version. The original 12" version had only a 4 measure drum intro, while the rest of the song was the same structure as this one. This version with the extended intro was made later by someone else, adding the strings, synth, bass, all of which don't appear in the song again. They also created that little filtered section at 1:20. None of these elements are a part of the original 12" version, which is right here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sMtxoc5yyqnJdo0.html

Best year to be born = 1972 Got some late 70’s memories like Evil Kenevil, Matchbox Cars, Star Wars Got all the 80’s, Saturday Morning Cartoons, Movie, Music, 300zx, Starion/Conquest etc and the mindset - not so PC Correct. We also got the 90’s, so we got the best of both worlds.

Simple Minds is in fact, one of the great influences of the next G bands... Lack of recognition for this group though. This Song was one of pinnacle of the new wave era!
