The bass on these tunes comes from another world. Just mesmeric.

@@AvrilPayne I agree Avril. Yes, they definitely have written & recorded a lot of great songs since, and I really enjoy some of their post-Forbes albums (purists may diss "Once Upon A Time", but I think it's a fantastic album..and all good bands DO evolve..). The new bass players were/are good...BUT, what they lost was Derek's obvious mastery of the bass...it was THAT sound that was both percussive & tuneful, and sat in the mix perfectly. His baselines were always propelling the songs forward, supported the mood, and featured impeccable timing & technique. IMHO, all of this, gave their music a more aggressive edge, an urgency which complimented the drumming & provided the perfect foil to more atmospheric lush sounds of Charlie & Mick & the full baritone from Jim. 👍😎👍 (BTW, I'd say the same thing about the band after Mick left. It was all about that key word again, "Mastery", which represented what the band lost when Mick went his own way...)

@@derekbaker3279 Completely agree - the combination of Forbes driving circular riffs and MacNeils spooky and eerie keyboards (usually in a minor key) gave them a genuine alternative vibe on the early masterpieces - in particular Real to Real and Empires. When that went it became more stadium, more mainstream and less interesting - I never liked Burchill's guitar that much, was a bit of jangly nonsense most of the time. The guts and brains were with Derek and Mick - even McGee's cranky claustrophobic drumming (similar to Stephen Morris in Joy Div) was better than the 'big kit' bombastic stuff that came later.

Memories of recording these songs on cassette and playing them over and over. John Peel was the best - never ever spoke over a song. Even on fade-out tracks he waited till the very end. Respect for the artists and very good for us recording these gems! (Although I do wish now I had recorded the entire shows just to hear his voice and wit and humour now)

to be honest most DJs would talk over the end of songs to stop people taping them for music piracy/profiterring. But yeah, good on Peel for not giving a damn about that.

The skill of a band is evident when they sound as good or better live / in Peel's studio than on their album.

They blew away all the other bands at that time, with, perhaps the notable exception of Japan. There was a darkness within their music that floated on the killer bass lines of Derek Forbes. SITR was the point where they began to teeter on the edge, and although I do not begrudge their commercial success with their later albums, I began to loose interest. This period was amazing though.

I agree with that comment. The first 5 album’s pushed sonically the art form of the “pop” song beyond anything emotionally that had been done before and arguably since. Saw them live twice.

Oh my, Simple Minds when they were a vital, up-and-coming outfit. They didn't rely on writing hooky pop songs as much, and mixed in some interesting soundscapes. Good stuff.

Chart success meant the end of creativity for most bands in the post 82 period. Simple Minds are one of the best examples of this and the stadium rock doesn't come to their output from 79-82

The transition to mainstream is here in these tracks. I saw them live for the first time in Sept 1982 in Edinburgh after falling in love w I Travel and the Empires & Dance LP. New Gold Dream was the end for me, as 'Sprinkle in the Tinkle' was just awful. 🤣
