New book! Simple PVC Pipe Bows Book - www.amazon.com/gp/product/1478...
Hey everybody, today we'll be building an 80 pound longbow with PVC pipe, the same one in my last shooting video. This is the second part in which we will taper the tips, string the bow, weight it, and have some hilarity ensue.
I apologize for this video. Near the end of the build (I started at night, so it was pretty late) I started to get a little tired. The bow was also quite heavy, so some humor leaked through.
I hope you enjoy the video, especially my creative use of language in the last bit.
As a side note, this bow was getting, this night, an average of 165 fps with a 435 gr. arrow. It was going between about 160 and 170. This shot was a bit of an outlier, but very cool nevertheless. I never thought I would break 170 fps with a PVC bow under any circumstances.
On a cloudy hot day, I averaged 160 fps with a 435 grain arrow.

A good alternative for the heat shrink tubing (I checked prices and it can get a little expensive) - Is a tightly wound layer of strapping tape (the kind with the little strings in it) - and a layer of electrical tape on top of that. The Strapping tape is really strong, can withstand lots of shock and pressure, and the electrical tape holds it really tight to the surface.

Thank you Backyard Bower. I have now made 4 bows. My 9 year old daughter is hitting a 10 inch target from 25 ft with a 30lb bow. Simply awesome. From my family to your special talent. Anyone can make a bow, few are capable of educating as well as you do along the way. Cheers!

I just finished my 80lb bow and not only is it strong, but it's also very elegant. I really appreciate that you posted your knowlage for everyone else. Oh, using the same method, I made two bows from 1/2" PVC for my 6 year old sons (yse they're twins). They love them. I painted them camo style and can't wait to learn how to shoot. Thanks again!!! The string I used in the video was 62 inches long. I would suggest a shorter 61 inch string to bring the brace height up. The bow can handle it and your wrist will thank you! If buying a string, look for an AMO 64 inch string (65 for a shorter brace height). This bow works well with flemish and endless strings in Dacron and flemish strings in Fast Flight. You can find strings at most archery shops and on eBay. There are also lots of custom string makers. 3 Rivers Archery also sells strings.

Thanks! Yes, you can determine weight by the length of pipe starting out. For every inch of pipe you add or subtract to each limb (so for every 2 inches total), the range changes by 5 pounds. So if this bow were made to be 2 inches shorter, expect about 80-85 pounds. At 2 inches longer, expect about 70-75 pounds. Adjusting the taper thickness is another way to change weight, especially on larger diameter pipes. This can be done after the bow is flattened to fine-tune the weight.

Thanks for a great video on making a fantastic bow. I never thought I'd have the variety of bows that your videos have helped me make, especially at the cost of a PVC bow. I was thinking that this would make a great survival bow. Your videos have more real information for survival bows than anywhere on the net. Nick, you are the "Survival Bow King" of the internet, even though this build never mentions the word "survival". And I too echoed your exclamation, "Holy S _ _ _" . Right on the poundage ! ! !

Nice job nick! Well I found out the problem on why the one inch PVC bow that I was making collapsed on me when I went to string it. I tried to make a fancy carved nock and cut from the out side of the bow.Thanks to this vid you explained that when you cut the out side of the bow you weaken the bow. Well live and learn the next one will be better Thanks for the vid nick.......

modern Bowstring is usually made out two materials, Dacron B-50, and for heavier bows, Fastflight. I would think that on a heavier bow like this you want a fastflight string because it doesnt stretch as much as dacron, which really makes it easier to string the bow. You can buy dacron or fastflight strings from archery stores, online I would try three rivers archery.

Great vids. I found these videos from a posting on a trad archery site. Someone thought they would make good bow fishing bows instead of messing up their nice wooden bows. You should consider putting a relatively light, short, easy to maneuver one together, 40-50 lbs rigged up for a fishing reel. You could probably sell em easy, if you are in to that. Great job! ingenious!!

I began watching this video filled with skepticism, cynicism and pessimism. I didn't believe you could make it work and even if you did I thought it must be stiff and awkward, I thought it would look plastic, fake and ugly, being made of such materials. What you have done good sir is make something beautiful. There is something inherently graceful in the bend of a bow and you have captured it. I congratulate you. Also thank you, because I am going to the hardware store to get me some Pvc ;)

I'm also 15 and if you don't want the heavy draw just make your bow with smaller pipe. I used 1 inch pipe schedule 40 (that's the thickness) and its a 5 foot piece flattened and looking like this. I'm putting my string on tomorrow for the first time and right now I am guessing its going to be about 40- 55 pounds or so which is fairly easy to pull.
@BackyardBowyer
@BackyardBowyer 12 жыл бұрын
@the3rdsentry You can put a recurve in it, I'd do a very gradual one, about 10 inches of flex with a total gain of 4 inches of reflex. Doing a small and abrupt recurve could cause the tip to fold. Either way it would be scary to string up but I think you could squeeze a few more FPS out of it.

Just a tip before you apply the contact cement use the plumber purple stripper on the PVC it take of the protective layer or skin on the PVC. Then put the contact cement then the heat shrink. I'm not sure how much a difference it will make but I will guarantee absolute bonding. I love this bow thats the only thing I did differently . I'm to a plumber but I've donetons of plumbing.

Hey Nick, ok so if I make this bow the same way as you describe, then both 60" or 61" bow string should work correct? Then how many strands of recurve B-50 Dacron for this 80# bow? Ive only seen 18 strands for up to 70#... Will that work ok or do you recommend something different? Great video by the way! I will try to duplicate your design, as its the best I've seen so far!

I pull the string down to 28 inches on my tillering tree, which is really only 26.25 inches. This is the AMO draw-weight, as measured from the inside of the bow's handle to the string plus 1.75 inches. A true 28 inch draw without the 1.75 buffer would bring the bow to almost 85 pounds.

If you used 1-1/2" pipe, the arrow will point to the side quite a bit. It's just because the handle is so thick. You can fix for this by heating and pressing the handle to one side. Though it is possible to shoot your bow well as-is, it'll just take some getting used to.
