In this tutorial I will show you how to download and install Ortho4xp and get your Ortho photos into X-Plane with ease. This tutorial is meant to be quick and to the point, with no extras, to get you back flying as quickly as possible with great scenery. I hope new people to X-Plane and Ortho4xp find this tutorial useful.

It has been brought to my attention I overlooked something in my tutorial. If you are going to bake 1 tile, there is 1 more extra step you must do for the overlays to work @new holland This was brought up on steam from user : Originally posted by BigKangaroo3: I notice you had a question from 'new holland' on your KZfaq page around the Overlays. He may have tried to create/bake a single tile, not 4 like you showed in your video. When creating/building a single tile and selecting 'All in one' to work through the 4 steps listed (Assemble Vector data - - Build Imagery/DSF), the Extract Overlays step is not included. When building a single tile, after selecting 'All in one', the user needs to go to the 'Tiles collection and management' window (World Icon) and select 'Extract overlays' only and hit the Batch Build button as the very last step in creating the tile. So, in truth, ALL IN ONE... isn't all in one. In my opinion if you wanted to bake one tile or 20 I would just use the same method of shift clicking a tile, selecting ALL checkboxes and building. Its just easier. Sorry for the confusion. **If you followed the tutorial and built more then 1 tile this doesn't affect you.**

No , I looked for Y overlay folder in the path custom synergy I gave it in setting but because of some reason the folder is not created, I will remove all loaded z folders and redo it one more time I may get lucky this time. :)

Thanks, the thing that help me on your demo was the explanation of lack of details shown at ground level vs what you see as you climb higher. Until I seen your video explaining this, I kept thinking something is wrong with my setup not set in with my Ortho4xp. Now I realize this is the expectation. I don't recall anyone else in other Ortho4xp videos explaining that. So until now, I had been wondering if they had other custom sceneries loaded. Thanks, this was helpful for me.

If you preview with OSM from the drop down you can easily find Airports... I think S - M stands for Street Map

I think what is needed is some sort of facility in Ortho4XP that does a better job of blending the tile edges with the default scenery. Perhaps that is Ortho4XP 1.40!

there is a way to do this adding the ortho into the airport. I have a new ortho video coming very soon, I'll let you know when its up and I'll be mentioning this.

Ortho4XP is a horrible half-baked unfinished bit of code, so tutorials like this are helpful in overcoming the clunky and old-fashioned experience

If you go to the settings page, in the upper right under DSF/imagery, change (high_zl_airports) to true, or icao then the third button down (cover_zl) select the zoom level you want around the airports. icao only finds airports with an iaco and leave smaller airfields alone... Thanks so much for this - this gave me the keys to getting it working. Just one question - could you give some basic clue as to how you manage to capture the video and audio from within VR? Running OBS on the same computer as the Oculus and XP11 ruins the frame rate and I have seen references to capture on a second PC. What are the available options and is there a configuration that would allow at least a low-res capture to be maintained on the same computer as XP itself?

so obs either uses CPU (which would kill xplane) or your video card (which mortally injures x-plane) to compress video. I capture all my VR and games on a seperate pc. You would definitely take a framerate hit in vr doing capture on the same pc with OBS

Could you make a video about what each option in the settings menu mean? I know that to make lower resolution ortho look better you need to set use_decal_on_terrain to true, but i don't know what most of the other options mean.

I'll look into it. There is a lot of options in ortho but I just set out to make a basic quick tutorial for it. maybe I'll make an advanced one soon.

Thanks, this is really good walkthrough. I downloaded a small area (in Southern Ireland) and it looks good but it forces the ground to be flat. I tried different custom_dems but no luck. Any tips on what I need to do? Thanks.

I'm not sure if the custom_dems work outside USA. I know for sure and something I may have left out of my video is NED 1/3 only exists for USA. I'll look into what people have been using there and see what I can find. currently I'm moving atm so I won't be able to get to it until March. I plan on doing more videos with more consistency then. Sorry I'm not much help.

Hi there, fantastic video thank you. If you were going to work through a larger area to complete would you still complete 4 at a time? or should I just do all 100 at once?

I do like 20 at a time... the ortho comes from government servers and external sources. They go down from time to time... best to complete 20 then have it hang on one for a long amount of time thinking its building 100 ;)

sorry for the late response, but sometimes areas may not have that level of detail. You can select 19 but if there are no satellite from the provider at that resolution, it will pick the highest and use that.

Thank you for the tutorial! I am having a problem though. I follow your steps up and including creating a shortcut on my desktop for the Ortho app but when I double click it to open the program nothing happens. Any suggestions?

hmmm. I'm not sure. It should do 1 of 2 things. 1. Run something, even if it crashes it should attempt to run Ortho. OR 2. It should say that the shortcut isn't linked to anything. I would try to run the program without a shortcut, just from the directory and see if that works.

There are a couple. @@craigmiotk5689 there are many programs for framerate in non-vr. Steam has it built in and there is a checkbox in the settings and so does the nvidia tools has a checkbox to show framerate. You can also turn it on in the data table inside x-plane as well

great work but I got this error all the time C:/X-Plane 11/Global Scenery/X-Plane 11 Global Scenery\Earth nav data\+40-130\+47-123.dsf absent. Recall that the overlay source directory needs to be set in the config window first. any idea how to fix it?

I've tried to do areas of Tennessee and am only filling up 2 bars of the 3 in Ortho4XP. What's the third bar and how do i do it??

Raven's Planes the three completion bars under “assemble vector data” and “3D Mesh”. It only loads two of them when I do batch build.

After running through your tutorial step by step, and not finding any change in scenery. I have noted that during the download I keep getting an apparent error message that the" OSM server DE has rejected my query" over and over. I am using GO2 for imagery. I do get Ortho files after the process finishes which I make a shortcut, etc. as you advise to finish up. Any idea what the problem is?

sometimes the servers go down that have the data. I would try bing and see if that works. Or try again later and see if the server comes back up.

I run the program but I have a problem with the Elevation data. As you can see from the screen shot below, Min and Max altitude is at 0.0. Loading elevation data and smoothing it over airports. Downloading ..\Elevation_data\+30-110\N39W105_NED13.img from USGS. * Min altitude: 0.0 , Max altitude: 0.0 , Mean: 0.0 Causes some pretty funny images when flying. I have a scenery pack for KAPA in Denver which is at 5880'. When I take off, I fly a mile or two into the other scenery which is 5880' BELOW ME..... Or, if I take off from an airport in the scenery, then the airport pack shows like a MESA 5880' above. It's a virtical wall up to that airport. Any Help on why I'm not getting the elevations in my files?

i'm not sure what is causing that. You can match your settings to my discord under x-plane has a screenshot of my settings to get good elevation. If its still wrong it could be wrong from the source where its getting the data from.

Well i made an attempt to create 2tiles. Got a error mesg. saying could not execute code because MSVCP120.DLL missing. I check ortho4xp download and only see MSVCP140.dll tried download again same results. is there a newer version of 4xp 1.3 if so where can iget it

I haven't seen that error before. I built a few tiles a couple days ago. There hasn't been an update to Ortho4xp in a long while. I'm pretty sure the dev went on to do other things and what we have is what we have. Googling that dll, seems is part of the C++ redistributable packages (used in all kinds of games/software) You can try reinstalling it. - support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads

When I download Ortho, I just get a white folder. Or if I do get the full download the .exe isn’t there. Does anyone have any recommendations on what I may be doing wrong? Thank you in advance

make sure you use the link in this video description so you are getting the right 1.3 version. The .exe file is in the ortho4xp/binaries/ folder

At the end when I was loading a flight, I got 2 error messages saying they could not find a .dds file. So, I tried again but this time I sat there and watched the process. Sure enough, I got pages and pages of warning saying "Could not convert texture [file location][file name].dds" (brackets are mine). It did these for all of the 4 sections I picked. I know this video has been up for quite a while now but I still hope someone is still reading the comments and can help.

sounds like it either didn't get the ortho images, or the are located in the wrong place

@@RavenSimulations thanks. I totally removed any part of the Ortho4XP installation and I actually notices some error messages early in the installation process. One was "MSVCT120.dll was missing". All .jpg files are missing. Are you sure that the Ortha4XP is has not been corrupted somehow?

If you only baked 1 tile, for some reason it doesn't create overlays... OR you didn't set your overlays folder and its in the ortho4xp folder instead of where you want it.

I did run into an issue recently building ortho in Montana, I was using the 1/3 Ned elevation data but it came out flat. the reason was there is no 1/3 Ned data. I changed it to 1 Ned which is lower resolution which then fixed it because that data existed. some places don't have the same resolution data, especially outside the USA... and even some inside usa...

Well, I don't see any difference! , have you done it right?, how you could get your Y folder by that setting?, you haven't built the all in one download after you used the all in one, I still don't understand how could you make it work, if you say so. Sorry your video is incomplete.

I tried it but it didn't create overlay folder, I think because I gave a path to be loaded also in costume cinerary , I noticed the entire map appears in X-Plane " Flat " is that because I don't have the overly? Another question abut the appearance , is it flat, or 3D like Google earth? Thanks

@@FlightSim2703 not flat unless its flat in real life. the 3d part comes from the usgs 1/3rd setting for the mesh

@@RavenSimulations awesome, it's cool in 3D like Google Earth if I do it right, so far I followed all posted videos on KZfaq but unfortunately no changes to areal views whenever I fly over the Tiles I downloaded, looks like I'm doing something wrong even though I think I followed all steps, but question how comes I don't get Y Lear loaded it's a question for me , thanks
