Finally, a fantastic video on this great little unit. I am running it off 3AA batteries (4.5v) and using a circular switch to swap between 1-4. I struggled a year ago with this and put the project top rest, and finally picked it up again yesterday. I'd love to also add a one-shot 555 led chaser to it (another learning curve =). All the best

First, thanks for watching! If you're running through batteries and you have the space you could use a 12V battery with a 12V to 5V converter wired to it. That would give you some long play time. amzn.to/44b4Y0M amzn.to/3Yy8EZy

YOU HAVE NO IDEA, how helpful that was. Mine arrived today and I have been struggling to get it working. I did not realise that 32G was the max card size, so presumably the 64G one I tried, was unsuitable. Also the file naming is well explained by yourself. I have been an electronics hobbyist for many years, but I struggle with anything involving computer type stuff. I think that your explanations are excellent, particularly for beginners. I have a couple of perfect storms that I use on the larger Vignettes which works great for them . The versions I received look identical but had some things to take note of: 1. The board will not play or respond to I/O triggers while USB is connected for file transfer; while a PC is connected and the board detects a data link, button presses to the board I/O will do nothing. But if a "stand-alone" power source is used to power the board, like a common USB power bank, the board will function as expected using its USB port. This means that even when the board is powered by an external source using its +5 VDC pins, the audio triggers applied to its I/O will cease until the USB data link is disconnected. 2. The board requires a power-cycle after changing the mode switches. Changing DIP switch positions do not cause the board to change modes until the power has been disconnected then restored. I will be using the "key combination mode" which isn't working as expected, and I'm not sure if audio files beyond DEC #9 should continue with decimal numbering, 00001 - 00255, or with hexadecimal 00001 - 000FF, but I suspect decimal will be fine. I expect the files to be triggered by applying typical boolean patterns to the 8 selector lines, from 0h, to FEh.
@TheMakersCave
@TheMakersCave 5 ай бұрын
I also have found that these boards like to run in "stand-alone" mode and it be honest almost everyone uses them in that manner. And yes, after a mode change you have to power fail it. It reads those setting only once at power up. I haven't played with the "key combination" mode much, I'll have to take a look.

GREAT VIDEO FOR PEOPLE UNFAMILIAR WITH ELECTRONICS. IMO, Everything you covered was pretty easy to figure out just by looking at the board (of course I'm an EE with a lot of experience). So unfortunately, it was no value to me. What I would like to know is more about the dip switch because I want to use this in a synth module and I would like to be able to incorporate all the features. I like the relay output. I don't plan on driving motors or lights that would require a relay, but I can use the digital output that triggers the relay board to send trigger pulses to other synth modules that would trigger envelope generators, LFO's, VCA's, sequencers, sequential switches, etc. For now, I'LL TRY TO SEE IF I CAN FIND MORE INFO, You did a great job with the basics and I'd love to see you do another video that covers the DIP switches. I do have one question. If you were to get remove the DIP switches and connect 3 digital trigger points to the corresponding "On" pads, could you use those 3 trigger voltages to perform the same function as the DIP switch. In other words, instead of setting the DIP switch to off, on, off, could you remove the DIP switch and send either a digital voltage of 0, 1, 0 to the 3 on pads of the DIP SWITCH and make the circuit function as if the DIP Switch was set for off, on, off? (I just made assumptions as to how it might work. Perhaps, you'd have to apply the inverse digtal triggers (1,0,1) to the 3 "On" pads (or maybe the triggers should be connected to the 3 "Off" or "common" pads instead. (Perhaps the "On" pads supply internal digital voltage triggers and the switches determine the mode by connect the triggers to the "Off" pads. So the first question is "Is that what the DIP Switches do, or do they work in a different way?")
@TheMakersCave
@TheMakersCave 4 ай бұрын
Hi! Thanks for watching. I've never tried digital switching of the DIP switches but it sounds like a neat idea. I would think that all the switches do is make a connection to ground, so in theory you could control them through microcontroller (arduino, pi, etc..). I would just probe both sides of the switches and see what you get.

Im looking for the same answers as I build custom 1/7 rc cars like the LIMITLESS.. his next vid is supposed to show how to do just that with arduino so that arduino needs to support PWM which most of them do support that and so do some of the Raspberry. I know a lot of things but I have never owned an arduino or Raspberry. I turned a Turbo key chain ornament into an audible turbo sound for my rc car. I used a PWM relay that responds to my transmitter and the relay opens and closed the circuit (the button) on the turbo and I soldered an earphone jack from the turbo’s speaker and plugged into a custom Bluetooth speaker in my rc car. So when I give throttle, the turbo plays through the rc car’s speaker. I built an intercooler for the front of the car and the speaker is inside the intercooler. You can check out the entire build series if the RC Skyline on my channel. If I succeed with my new current build I’m doing with the 1:7 scale Bugatti, you’ll definitely catch that on my channel for sure!

great video. Question: do you connect two or three pins for different sounds together if you want them to play simultaneously? Added to this I would like to have some of the sound clips as ambient (background ) sound . Purpose is for a diorama of a Bar in the background and a street musician in the front and some street sounds all playing together. A controller for the volume of each sound may also be useful to control the volume of each of them.
@TheMakersCave
@TheMakersCave 2 ай бұрын
Sadly it can only play one sound at a time. If you want to play all those sounds together at once at different volumes I would suggest using Audacity (free audio mixing software). Add each sound as a separate track, that way you can control the volume of each sound. Then make one MP3 file that plays.

You might want to take a look at this board. It has the motion sensor already built in and on every activation it play a different sound file. It has onboard memory and SD Card memory for mor and larger files. It also has the "Busy" pin so a relay can be used and the relay stays activated for the length of the sound file being played.

definitely the type of solution I've been looking for. How could I trigger this from an output on a prop controller? I have a rather complex room that runs a whole show where, when triggered, a bunch of different animations happen in sequence. Think like a supernatural zoo where things breakdown one by one... I'm planning on running the whole thing off a frightprops flexmax2, but that only has one audio output and I'll need to send a sound to 6 separate speakers for different animations. I certainly don't want to buy a $100-$200 card for each speaker just to get the audio. So this would be great if I could run it off of the flexmax.

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I’m in the process of building my Real Ghostbusters proton pack and your vid was EXTREMELY helpful. I’m relatively new to wiring boards into my props and your explanations were so easy to comprehend. Thank you so much. 😊 I do have some questions too: 1. Would you recommend a button switch being wired between the ground pin and a sound pin to wire specific sounds to specific switches to be found in different locations on the prop? In my case the proton thrower would have two buttons in two different locations, and each would play a different sound. 2. What speaker are you using? Since this vid is 2yrs old, are there any other mini speakers you recommend? 😊
@TheMakersCave
@TheMakersCave Ай бұрын
You have it absolutely correct. Use a button for each sound pin just connect one terminal of the switch to ground and the other terminal to the pin of the sound you want with that button. For the speaker, I used a 5W mini speaker. Given the prop you are building you'll probably want better speakers and more than the 5W that board puts out, so you'll want to use the built in 3.5mm jack. How much voltage are you using in the proton pack?

I bought a sound board and relay kit from Steve for a Slimer and Samhain from "The Real Ghostbusters." I didn't get the body of Samhain working, but I did get Slimer working thanks to Steve. I recorded a video during our "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" movie theater promotion that has Slimer with Steve's help: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m7mhmcRn3LTPn58.htmlsi=8KrdUS-ZWYm_sdA6 Yesterday I was trying to use the sound board and relay in 12 volts (same power cell that powers our 3D printed proton packs) using Steve's method to operate a Ghostbusters II slime blower cannon. I couldn't get the lights and sound to work. I wanted to press a button in, have it play the slime sound, and then turn off as soon as I pressed the button off again. I had the DIP switches set to 011 thinking that would do it. This morning I decided to go back to MP3 player mode. I had used a chaser LED board for the yellow powercell light and used the second in the 2 pack to power the pink LEDs. I could hear the one sound effect 00001.mp3 play. When I disconnected the ground, the lights and sound went off. So instead of trying the relay, I just hooked the lights and sound board directly with the power source, using a button switch to break the ground, and completely removed the relay to get this slime blower cannon in the video. I did fix the one non working pink LED: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nJdlod11lp-dZH0.htmlsi=-lQJfq1JH9be0eQA

check out this video, I think using both boar.ds might be the answer. Here's what I'm thinking. The motion board detects a person and plays the sound and a relay activates the lights. Using some type of switch, snap, lever, plunge, on the box lid to do activate a relay using ground(neg). That relay would cut power to the first sound board and and the ground signal would also go to one of the pins on the non-motion board. That would activate that board which would play a sound and activate another relay that turns on the box lights. I can do a drawing to explain it better, it's actually pretty easy, I just don't think I did a good job describing it :)

I’m making the Clark Griswold hanging guy for Christmas. I have a two wire motion sensor set up to activate the 12v wiper motor but I want to add sound. Would this system work for that and how?
@TheMakersCave
@TheMakersCave 7 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching. This board would defiantly work. You would have the motion sensor activate the sound board. Once activated the board would start to play the sound and at the same time activate busy pin which would activate the relay for the wiper motor. I would use the heavy duty relay as wiper motors draw some amperage. If you want us to wire together a package that includes the PIR, Relay, and sound board just drop me an email. That why all you have to do is load your sound file and wire the motor to the relay. Sales@GraveDecor.com

Good afternoon I wanted to thank you for your content it’s amazing. I purchased your mp3 board with motion sensor attached to it. I have added a couple files from usb and it plays a Fanta commercial on it. I deleted the file when I plugged the board to the computer but it still plays. Also I deleted an old 2gb mini usb card and added a couple of test sounds on there and somehow plays one of the deleted songs that was on there. I’m lost lol any help would be greatly appreciated. Also when I remove the sd card from the board and plug it into the computer the sd card only shows the two test sounds which is great but when I put the sd card into the board it will play those two sounds plus one of the files I deleted before adding the test sounds lol.

What you want to do is pretty straightforward. Attach a push button with one connector to the pin sound you want activated and the other button connector to the ground pin. Use the boards busy pin to activate a relay the makes the lights go on while the sound plays. Here's a couple of links to help you. Question! I am using a photoelectric beam sensor to trigger a relay that grounds the pin to play the audio. However using that sensor allows the audio to restart if re-triggered. Is there a way to allow the audio complete even if it gets multiple trigger inputs?
@TheMakersCave
@TheMakersCave 9 ай бұрын
That is the con's for that board. That's why I mostly use the HC-SR501 PIR sensor, it block repeated triggers. One thing you could try is using the "Busy" pin to activate a relay that can trigger on a "LOW" signal. Cut the the negative OR positive lead for the power going to the beam sensor, don't cut both. On the Normally Closed really terminal put one end of the cut and on the Common terminal attach the other end of the cut. You want to use the Normally Closed because we want the current to flow to the sensor when the relay is at rest. Now when the beam is broken it starts the sound and the board places a "LOW" signal on the Busy pin. That will activate the relay thereby cutting the power to the beam sensor so re-triggers can't happen. When the sound stops the Busy pin goes "HIGH" again releasing the relay and connecting power back to eh beam sensor. If you need any help just let me know. Here's the relay you would use: gravedecor.com/product/5v-activated-relays-with-standard-terminals-10a/

You probably want a card like this. It has a Miro SD slot that you can use to hold a lot of sound files. It has a built in motion sensor and a 3W sound amp. Like the other board it has a "busy" pin so you can have it activate a relay. What's nice is that on every activation it'll go the next file. If you want to use a step pad or button instead of the motion sensor, you can just cut off the sensor and by shorting the sensors yellow and red wires it will activate. gravedecor.com/product/mp3-player-with-motion-sensor-3watt/

Hi, thanks for watching, I really appreciate it. If you want to use an Arduino, and I have quite a few times, there are several methods. The board has Tx/Rx pins for serial communication, I don't have the Arduino library driver for that since I usually use it in the following manner for simplicity. Just take the 8 pins on the sound board and attach each one to a pin on the Arduino. In your Arduino card set all those pins to Output and set them to High. Since Low activates a pin you need to set them to HIGH as soon as you can in your start up code. Then in your loop section of the code look for whatever activation method you want to use (motion, button, step pad). On activation just make the sound pin you want go LOW for .5 second and then go HIGH again. Example Code: digitalWrite(Pin1,0); delay(500); digitalWrite(Pin1,1); If you need any help just let me kow.

can you loop a sound FX and trigger to stop ?
@TheMakersCave
@TheMakersCave 2 ай бұрын
Actually yes. The pins look for a LOW signal to play, and a HIGH to stop. Most PIRs outgoing trigger pin is LOW when not triggered and HIGH when triggered (motion). You could connect the PIR trigger pin to the sound board's pin. The LOW would keep that pin playing in a loop. When motion is sensed the PIR would change it's trigger pin from LOW to HIGH, stopping the file from playing.

The DY-SV8F has 8MB of onboard memory. The DY-SV5W has no onboard memory, you have to use a Micro SD Card no larger than 32GB. That is the only difference between the two cards. You definitely should be able to use a data USB cable with SV8F to transfer the files. When you plug the board in does the computer recognize it as a drive? The same for the SV5W. Let me know.

Can this play multiple files continuiously?
@TheMakersCave
@TheMakersCave Жыл бұрын
Actually, kinda, yes. I just discovered this feature (or bug). You set the DIP settings as 1 (on), 2 (off), 3 (on), the opposite of how I have it in the video. With these settings when power is applied the board will continually loop through all the audio files on the card.

Is there a maximum sound file size allowed for each pin?
@TheMakersCave
@TheMakersCave Жыл бұрын
as far as I know there is no file size limit as long as it'll fit on to the card.

Hi I’m not very experienced in using Arduino how do you use one to control the board ?
@TheMakersCave
@TheMakersCave Жыл бұрын
The easiest method for this board is to simply connect each of the eight pins to a pin on an Arduino and a PIR/Motion sensor to an Arduino pin and the relay trigger pin to the busy pin of the sound board. A simple Arduino code would look for a trigger from the Arduino and then pick a random sound pin to activate. The busy line of the sound board would keep the relay activated for the length of the sound. With this method you could have 8 different sounds for the one prop. Let me know what help you need. Here's a link to our Nano board: gravedecor.com/product/arduino-compatible-nano-atmega328p. If you like I can send you the code.

What about when a prop does have sound and you want a way to control the volume?
@TheMakersCave
@TheMakersCave 8 ай бұрын
There's several different things you can do. Both in volve opening the control box where the speaker is. The first is cutting one wire that goes to the speaker and wiring in a resistor. Problem with that is you need to know the exact resistance you want for the volume level you want, a lot of trial and error. The better way to do it is to use a 10K potentiometer (pot or volume knob). That way you can tune it to the volume level you want. Wiring it in is simple. You again cut one of the speaker wires and wire in the pot. One end goes the middle terminal of the pot and the other end goes to on the the pot terminals on the end. It's doesn't matter which end terminal you pick but depending on which pot end terminal you pick will determine which direction you turn the knob to increase or decrease the volume. Here's a link to some 10K pots on Amazon. These particular pots are nice because they come with wires soldered to them for easier wiring. amzn.to/45JNhGs

Can I wire it to get the sounds at random?
@TheMakersCave
@TheMakersCave Жыл бұрын
Sadly, that's the problem with this particular board, you would need something like an arduino to pick the random sounds. You might be more interested in this board: gravedecor.com/product/mp3-player-with-motion-sensor-3watt It plays the sound files sequentilly on each avtivation. It's been very popular, unfortunately I'm out of those boards and they are backordered to the first week of November. Too late for Halloween. Here's a video on the board: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o9mPrNSCnMWyg6c.html

Would it be possible to have the sound playing aslong as you keep the button pressed?
@TheMakersCave
@TheMakersCave 4 ай бұрын
One this board if you set the DIP switches to Switches 1 & 2 ON, 3 OFF the file for that pin will play as long as that pin is grounded. Once the connection is broken the song stops. I think this is what you are looking for. Let me know if you need any help :) Steve
