Way to go! Today I cut my first bike chain. Couldn't find a tool locally for anything reasonable in price, so bought a cheapo online, AFTER I played around with a jerry-rig using a vise, a sharpened bolt and a couple of nuts. Was taking too long and I needed another pair of hands, so blew it off and waited 3 days for my cheapo to arrive. So I watch this and feel like a fool---never would've thought of a hinge. Thanks a lot!...lol

A lot of people saying it's faster & easier to buy a proper chain breaking tool. This is still an easy thing to make if you have an old hinge & bolt available when shops closed or tool not in stock. Great idea 👍

If you don't have an angle grinder, drill, bolt and a hindge can always buy one

Brilliant idea for someone like me, I only need one of those tools once every few years, and it seems rather silly to buy one. I have done it in the past with a center punch, the hard way. Next time I will definitely use this tip.

Good idea if you put the bolt on before you start grinding your guaranteed not to have a problem with a crossthread in case the threads get messed up during the grinding

Anyone thinking of doing this, don't. Just go to the shop and buy a chain tool and save a lot of tone and effort. Also, that's gonna be a nightmare to get the pin back in to re-connect it.

The most simple way is to buy a chain cutter, its only cheap and easy to find even online. You dont need to go trough all the things that you did.

Let me see where my angle grinder, brass hinge, and nut and bolt are. Oh yes, I don't have any of those. My steps to cutting the chain. 1. Go online/to a bike shop. 2. Look for a chain splitter/breaker. 3. Decide what you like. 4. Buy it. 5. Wait for it to arrive soon or later depending on where you bought it. 6. Unpack it when it arrives. 7. Use it.

I rather buy the tool than a drill and a grinder.

an actual chain tool is far simpler but a nice idea.

Good idea but you should use an Allen bolt because it's tempered. You can also temper your bolt, just hit it up with a blow torch until it gets red and drop it in cool water.
