Mini Cooper S N14 engine coolant pump replacement. I try to capture a step by step instructional video on how to properly and easily change the water pump on the Mini Cooper S with the turbo. A lot of videos show removing many parts within the engine bay, but I decided to take a slightly different route and access the water pump through the wheel arch and without removing the friction gear/wheel. This may not give you as much space to work with, but allows you to replace the pump without removing any unnecessary components.

Are you saying there is white smoke coming from the water pump? I don't see how that's possible unless it is leaking and gets on the hot exhaust and burns off. What can see you? Do you see coolant drops if the car runs once warmed?

That sounds more like a head gasket issue. If the car overheated because the water pump wasn’t working it could have caused the head gasket to blow.

It’s between the head and the engine block. You won’t be able to see if it’s bad by just looking at it. One way to check is to open the oil cap and look at your oil. Does it look normal or milky, bubbly? Check your coolant also to see if it’s clear and blue like it’s supposed to be.

One of the better videos on KZfaq in regards to changing the water pump on a MINI via wheel arch. It definitely helped me out tremendously . I noticed my MINI had a leak coming from the water pump, and I ended up replacing a perfectly good water pump and friction wheel.- (So I replaced a water pump that was probably going to fail in the next 25k miles) When I removed the water pump (via wheel arch) the water pipe O-Ring was dislodged, and the flange was broken off. This now made a 6-hour project turn into 10 hrs. Upon disconnecting the bracket that stabilizes the automatic tranny linkage , I was able to pull out water pipe from underneath the intake manifold. To reinstall I had to remove the 5 Intake nuts and loosen the 2 bottom manifold support bolts. (one of them is difficlut to get too) This gave enough clearance to install the new water pipe. I installed the water pipe and reassembled. I started up the Mini and what do you know, it leaked. So, I disassembled again, only to find out that I tore up the O-ring when trying to install the water pipe. So, I pulled the pipe back put silicone grease on the new O-ring and reinstalled. If I had to do it all over again, the best thing to do is to remove the O-ring and put some electrical tape around the end of the pipe to protect it. Push the pipe approx. 3/4 of the way through. With the front passenger tire removed; pull the electrical tape off, install the O-ring, lube the O-ring with silicone grease, guide the water pipe into the water pump housing and seat it by pushing it from the thermostat housing end. Depending on the age of your thermostat housing, you may want to consider replacing it also . Hopefully this helps someone of your viewers when they are replacing their Mini water pump and discover they need a new water pipe

Again awesome video . These two things will the job a little easier. Remove the air assembly and throttle body duct. From the top side of the engine, above the water pump, there is a wiring harness in a metal channel that is bolted to the engine wiith a 10mm bolt. Remove the bolt, and wire tie the metal channeled wiring harness to the fender well. This will give you more clearance to manuever your ratchet/wrench, and easier access to the top water pump bolts .

The struggle is real. Have not been able to maneuver it out the back. And it’s still unrealistic to take friction wheel out first. But.. if you remove the intake manifold which you should do and check your pass through pipe.. that’s where I’ve had 2 failures. But by removing this you can access the top harder bolts for water pump. It this helps anyone save some skin.. cool.

I am going to be doing this soon, to a Peugeot 208 GTI. I believe it will basically be the same as this. I am wondering if it would probably be easier to remove the top engine mount, and drop the engine down. I think that would make it much easier to acces the bolts. Cheers for the video :)

Cant seem to find the video you mention at the start that help you diagnose for wster pump issue. Is it available? Currently going to replace my water pump as there is a noise coming from there and replacing the friction wheel was not the issue and Water pump pulley seems in good condition.

I did this job today myself in the shop...2012 mini cooper s water pump....all I did was remove right side headlight disconnected the 4 bolts on same side for black bar the runs across to other headlight...you dont need to completely remove the black bar just unbolt the 4 bolts it will give you enough clearance to lift it up and down...then disconnected the hose and motor mount then after that you have clearance to loosen the belt...then take right side tire off and iner fender then the engine will be down enough from taking mount off to take the water pump polly off and water pump itself then reverse order that easy.....dont need to do extra work...make it easier on yourself do less work

I saw that method in the manual but it seemed like a lot more work having to drop the engine. The way I did it might have been slightly more annoying as you have to spend some time getting it out, but less work overall. If I have to do this job again, I might try it your way to see which way works best. Thanks for the information and for watching! Hopefully it will help out someone else in the meantime.

if you take out the center bolt of the friction wheel this job is MUCH easier. People always seem to miss that the friction wheel is a single bolt. no need to take out the whole assy.

I did the waterpump on my cooper s yesterday, and as you said, removed the wheel of the friction pulley. Made the job so much easier! Surprised at how many people don't take this step and spend ages trying to squeeze the pump out of the tiny gap!

Hello. I appreciate you creating these videos for the public. I plan on purchasing a 2023 MINI Cooper S, this model is on Consumer Report’s recommendation list. I’ve contacted owners and they have had no issues with the 3rd generation. Is the water pump still made of plastic on the new generation? I value your opinion, it’s a 2023 model with the B48 engine, do you think bmw worked out all the bugs and ironed out the kinks from 2014 models? Do you agree with Consumer Reports? Please advise. I plan on getting my MINI in 2 weeks.

How do you get the water pipe back on? I went through the top and did the thermostat housing and water pipe, since the water pipe has to be pushed into the water pump how do you know those two parts are tight and locked in again?

Good video. You hadn't said anything about the water pump gasket/seal. Did this require adhesive? And did the gasket/seal play a role interfering with assembly, or by dislodging during assembly?

Thank you! I used the gasket that came with the pump, no sealants or anything. You have to be careful with the gasket once the pump is almost in place to make sure it doesn’t move. It’s been a few thousand miles in the summer with no issues.

at 10:45 you pump looks like mine and the only way to get it to that point. Then at 10:47, you pump has magically changed by 90 degrees to face the other way. HOW did you do that especially with the alternator cable that doesn't move and keeps the water pump from moving?

So what were your symptoms that led you to the water pump? I have an R56 that isn’t flowing thru the radiator. I’ve replaced thermostat and bled the coolant with vacuum filler several times. Still no go. Sound familiar? Lol

No exactly, mine would overheat if I drove for more than 25 minutes (so basically when the big loop opens). I let it run when it was warm on jack stands and it started dripping, so I tracked it up to the water pump.

I’m sure you took more than 3 hrs... you Can now appreciate what techs actually go through and why they get paid what they do to make it in less than 3 hrs ... there’s a much easier method for this replacement, I just thought I watch this videos to see what a DIYer does in the struggles... 👍🏼

I'd get a BMW/MINI specific scanner than can read each module. It should tell you if the signal is getting to the module, relay, wiper etc. Like this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mpeomsqVtqeWo3k.html

Haaa i never done water pump this design but i had im my own hands water pump literally in 15 minets. ( 2014 Mini Cooper S )...Right tools do right job....my tools probably worth more than whole car :) just kidding....

With the extra amount of time and difficulty, you could have removed the engine mount and dropped the engine to clear enough space. Might have saved alot of time.

It wasn’t necessarily difficult, it’s just not a lot of space to work with in there. Also, that would involve supporting the engine with an engine stand etc. thank you for the suggestion, though!

Get a Metal impeller. Plastic impeller= fail as well

You're not wrong. Although even BMW (actual BMW) engines suffer from water pumps going bad. My e92 n54 had this issue at 70k miles.

I guess I’ve been lucky then. I’ve got 215000 miles on my R56 S, and I’m tackling this job for the first time. Replaced my clutch for the second time at 195000 miles. I’ve learned that if you maintain your vehicles you can typically run them for 250000 miles or more.
