At five am on the 3rd of October 1935 Italian forces crossed into Abyssinia, modern day Ethiopia, signalling the start of the Second Italian-Abyssinian War.
The war’s outcome would not only change the face of Africa but the political rifts it caused between the fascist nations and the democratic nations would contribute to the beginning of the most devastating conflict the human race has ever known, the Second World War.

Not-so-fun fact: After World War II, while German and Japanese war criminals were tried and handed out sentences at Nuremberg and Tokyo, no Italians were tried as war criminals due to the British and Americans wanting to keep Italy as an ally in the Cold War against the Soviet Union, despite Yugoslav, Greek, and Ethiopian attempts to bring them to justice.
@qus.9617
@qus.9617 4 жыл бұрын
Nations aside, many war criminals avoided punishment in exchange for their expertise in America and the Soviet Union. Like unit 731 (live experimentation, chemical attacks on civilians) and Rocket scientists who used slaves and built wholly inaccurate missiles with no purpose with the exception of spreading terror and maximising civilian death.

@@simonetarga9908 One useless non-communist is better than a useless communist. Also Italy is literally at the center of the Mediterranean, making it a pretty strategic point for the future NATO to have. In fact, after the Cuban Missile Crisis, in return for the Soviet Union withdrawing nukes from Cuba, the United States withdrew Jupiter ballistic missiles from Turkey and Italy. Kinda shows how strategic Italy was in the Cold War.

The Italian invasion of Ethiopia wasted alot of Italy's resources, and isolated Mussolini by France and Britain which made Italy more dependent on Germany. Eventually it was the reason why Italy became an ally of Germany which led to its collapse.

Fun fact. Italy never managed to control 100% of Ethiopia, because of an Ethiopian resistance group called The Arbegnoch (Amharic for Patriots) That's why Ethiopian people say that they have never been colonized because they never surrendered and kept on fighting. Edit: many people are misunderstanding my comment. I never implied that Ethiopia would have been colonized if they didn’t resist the Italians. They were occupied by definition. I simply wanted to point out why many Ethiopians are proud of this conflict, even though it might look like a decisive defeat if you don’t know about the patriot’s resistance

@@nicolacormio8834 My point was about the use of more technologically advanced weapons against a weaker opponent. The British didn't use shields and spears to conquer their colonies in Africa, they used horses, rifles and cannons. Also chemical weapons were used in more occasions that just those you mentioned. Spanish and French militaries used chemical weapons against civilians during the rif war. Syrian troops used chemical weapons against civilian targets during the recent Syrian Civil War. Japan made extensive use of chemical weapons against both military and civilians in China. The USA used chemical weapons (Agent Orange) indiscriminately in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, often hitting civillians. Saddam before the date you mention used chemical weapons in 1988 against his own civilians in Halabja. Even during WW1 the chemical weapons deployed caused casualties on the civilian populations of cities and villages near the frontlines. And we should not forget about the countless of times chemical and bacteriological weapons were used in the past, especially during sieges. The glory of cowards is mutilating civilians and prisioners for the fun of it, a standard practice in East Africa at the time, commonly employed by Ethiopians

There are some historical misconceptions in the video: 1) Eritrea and Somalia were actually Italian colonies way before mussolini rise to power, both were established before the first world war even even in the end of 1890. 2) the crisis of 1929 had no serious impact in italy since the construction of IRI meant that 40 percent of the industry was owned by the state and therefore the state itself incentivated the economy to grow keeping them open, it wasn't a way to distract people but a way to show off the Italian might since the British were not able to conquer Ethiopia too. Plus the autarchy system that was in use in Italy meant that the sanctions had no serious impact because everything was self produced or imported from allied countries if needed 3) the global argument about biological and chemical warfare established after ww1 did not restricted the possibility to produce and to stock chemical weapons something that bot the allies like Britain, and the German Reich did. The German Reich didn't used them to avoid an attack from the allies in civilians and because Hitler faced the gasses during ww1 and feared their effects. The agreement about chemical weapons stated that they were not to be used as a main offense weapon but as a retaliation one in case of non military personnel fighting and ambushing the enemy army or civilians like it was the case during the libian pacification or the Ethiopian war. Ethiopians and libians captured and skinned alive or removed the scapls of Italian soldiers and civilians, this was a justified use by the international laws, indeed cruel but saw a limited use in the war and it would had no sustainal side effect on the war effort if it wasn't used. Furthermore the idea to use gas on a large scale was put in action by Badoglio even before he could send a request to mussolini itself, a decision took by an incompetent general

My grandfather was sent in Ethiopia and there was just one story that he kept telling whenever people asked him. As soon as he arrived at his camp the superior told him and all the new ones that their boots were the most valuable thing they had, they had to take care of them, should have not ruined them, lost them, and most importantly they had to sleep wearing them, because the Ethiopians really liked attacking at night. And that's exactly what happened. He woke up to one of his fellows shouting "The moors are here!" so he grabbed his rifle and was about the get out, but he shared his tent with another soldier that didn't have his boots on, so he sat there watching his back. However, as he heard noise behind him, he turned, and as soon as he saw the Ethiopian open the tent he shot and got him in the chest. He turned to check on his comrade, just to find him dead, one boot on, the other in his hands, his head hanging from his neck almost chopped off and an Ethiopian standing besides him. He was about to lunge at my Grandpa since he wasn't done cycling the bolt yet, but he was killed by another soldier nearby, after a brief fight they repelled the attack. This was the only time he saw combat, he mostly did transport/ logistic, when he came back he drove military trains at first, then civilian ones. He told me the Allies didn't care which was which, so one time his train got attacked by planes and half of it derailed. Luckily there were no people inside, no one got hurt.

C. C. A. Ethiopia was never colonized. Neither by Italy nor any other country. Google ADWA WAR: when the Italians first invaded the country, they lost (even though they had much better and more weapons than Ethiopia etc.) the second time they occupied parts of Ethiopia but they never managed to occupy Ethiopia as a whole so they never colonized Ethiopia. Ethiopia celebrates the victory over Italy (Adwa Day) . You need to get your facts right mate

Jimmy Dolo destroyed by Italy? How did Italy destroy Ethiopia but never even managed to colonize the country? That doesn’t even make sense man. Ethiopia won over Italy (Adwa war) and the second time Italy occupied parts of Ethiopia. Italy did a lot of harm, but they never destroyed Ethiopia. Ethiopia defeated a whole European power. Ethiopia doesn’t need to celebrate independence as the rest of the world,we celebrate victory 😉

C. C. A. “Despite the technically superior, modern weapons of the Italian army, the Ethiopians in 1896, under Emperor Menelik II, repelled the Italian invaders (Battle of Adua)“ - people are not weapons. Of course Italy had better and more weapons than Ethiopia and Ethiopia had more soldiers since Italians came to Ethiopia and not the other way around! Anyways my originally comment was related to the Adua War which the Ethiopia won . That’s why we celebrate victory, because if the Italians have won that day we would be celebrating independence . What happened afterwards was the second invasion of the Italians and eventually the occupation of parts of Ethiopia where the British helped Ethiopia . But Ethiopia’s victory is Ethiopia’s victory, not the British. The Italians plan was to colonize Ethiopia which they never did. That’s why we celebrate Adwa Day every year on March 1st to thank our greatest grandparents for protecting not only our country but our people ኢትዮጵያ ለዘላለም ትኑር 💚💛❤️
