In the Second World War, the average age of the American military was the mid 20's, with those of more advanced years generally excluded from combat roles. There are some, however, who defied conventional wisdom and served their country regardless of age. This is the story of one of the oldest soldiers on Omaha Beach.

51 years old in the field in that era or any other especially in that situation is damned old. For the record of the oldest man that landed at D-Day was Theodore Roosevelt Junior at Utah Beach he was 56 years of age and should not have been in the field at all because he had a heart condition and arthritis yet he made the landing yet in doing so he did actions that led him to receive the Medal of Honor

Sounds like BS. At Omaha Beach, most troops ended up in deep water coming up to their necks, the first two waves were virtually annihilated with all officers killed, no soldier was charging straight onto the battlefield. They were trying not to drown, then if they managed to reach the beach, all they could do was keep their heads down and try to seek cover.

The nickname "Dutch" for Norman Daniel "Dutch" Cota, Sr. is commonly believed to be associated with the Pennsylvania Dutch community. Although the Pennsylvania Dutch are of German descent, the term "Dutch" in this context is a corruption of "Deutsch," the German word for "German." This association is widely accepted among historians, and while the precise origin of Cota's nickname may not be definitively confirmed, the connection to this community is the most commonly cited reason for his moniker. It reflects the broader cultural and linguistic heritage of the region where the Pennsylvania Dutch community has had a significant influence.

Both the Dutch and the Germans were once referred to as "the Dutch" by the English. It was only later that a distinction between the two would be made. It wasn't just the English who were at it, since the lyrics of the national anthem of the Netherlands mention the father of fatherland, William the Silent, being of German blood, which has caused some consternation in modern times.
@AudieHolland
@AudieHolland 20 күн бұрын
@@peabase It has *never* caused consternation in modern times. Our National Anthem has been mocked by ourselves because of the silly lyrics. Our Founding Father was a German Count who loyally served the King of Spain. He was also Prince of Orange, which is in France and, apart from being Willem The Silent's private inheritance, it never meant anything significant. The French soon took it away from him but he did keep the title Prince of Orange for whatever reason. >>> it sounded good
@peabase
@peabase 20 күн бұрын
@@AudieHolland It sure has. There was a vindictive post-WW2 effort to tweak the lyrics so that "van _Duitsen_ bloed" would become "van _Dietsen_ bloed". It's debatable if William the Silent was German, Dutch, Belgian or even French by modern standards, considering the House of Nassau lived and owned property in each one of them. My two siblings and I were born in three different countries, yet we share the same national identity -- but not nationalities. I can boast all three. I was surprised to learn I could become a Luxembourger, too, despite never having lived there. Our family owns ancestral land there.

“Might as well have one last look.” “*nicht*(nothing). Not even a seagull-“ (*three dots and a dash*) The first WWII movie I saw. First started gettin interested in the war when I watched my dad play Call of Duty WWII. After that I saw The Longest Day because for whatever reason my mom loves to watch Turner Classic Movies. Then I found out my great grandfather was a paratrooper in WWII. From that moment on, I have wanted to be a paratrooper. I would see a lot more WWII movies overtime but The Longest Day is forever one of my favorites. My great grandfather was with the 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment in North Africa (Algeria-French Morocco, Tunisia). At the time it was still the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment until after its first jump into North Africa. Later he fought with the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment in the 82nd Airborne and jumped into Sicily. After the campaign ended, he was then sent back to England to prepare for Operation Overlord when he was transferred to the 101st Airborne and jumped into Normandy, and again into Holland. He also participated in the Battle of the Bulge at Bastogne and Operation Grenade (Central Europe). He had made 4 combat jumps during the war. He survived and passed away in 2006. That is correct although he was often called Theodore Jr. because his father had so eclipsed the grandfather. Even for his earliest signatures and books in the 1880s, he was always Theodore Roosevelt, never a Jr. The men of the 3 generations appear to be commonly called Theodore Roosevelt Sr., Theodore Roosevelt, and then Theodore Roosevelt Jr.

0:39 SPOILER!! When Saving Private Ryan came out Tom Hanks actions clearing the first opening was based on Norman "Dutch" Cota's action. It was he who rallied the troops, the landing was stalled when he landed, organized and performed above and beyond, considering he was the highest ranked man as a General, and they usually don't show up until the fighting is over. When he found the 5th Rangers stalled under fire he shouted at them "Well, Godd@mnit, if you are Rangers, then get up there and lead the way!" Which inspired the motto of the U.S. Army Rangers "Rangers lead the way".

It reminds me of that elderly college physics teacher, in Soviet Russia. If I remember well, he was already an adult while Russia still had a good 20 years being an Empire. He was way past 60, if not even nearing 80 when war came to the East. He bothered and pestered his way into service, in the infantry of the Red Army. He served as a sniper, where his knowledge of all things physics helped score some 20 to 30 or so confirmed kills, and was then sent back to a desk job or back to his job being a teacher. He survived the war and lived out his days peacefully.

In the North African campaign (1940-1943) the United Kingdom fought the “Desert Fox” There was a British teenager who served under eventual British Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery. After the War the soldier was mustered out. Several years later he emigrated to the US. Eventually he graduated Medical School & became a Doctor. Later he joined the US Reserves finally reaching the rank of Colonel. In 1990 Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. US called to duty military reserves. The Colonel was the only WW2 Veteran to be deployed in the 1991 Gulf War. I also assume he was among the oldest deployed. I read this story in a news magazine. It dealt with fact that most of the American expeditionary forces were inexperienced. The Colonel Doctor’s story was told as a contrast.

The best thumbnail is about Pegasus Bridge and the British Paratroops who took its and held til relieved. The famous English actor Richard Todd portrayed Major John Howard and in real life Richard Todd participated in the taking of Pegasus Bridge.

At the brigade level and above, it's not "executive officer" they're the "deputy commander." It's a protocol thing.

Interesting that he would've definitely been friends with, and served under Roosevelt Jr. with the Big Red 1, and they were both the oldest men to land on their respective beaches.

If the animated representation and the dialogue that Cota is depicted in his action are correct, then he should be regarded as the most active leader on June 6 and deserved to be the HERO of HEROES of the invasion. As a former soldier, I can appreciate a leader like this in a situation as such as D-Day because it's a matter of leadership under dire circumstances, whether you live or die. 😮‍💨

I would like you to personally react to the fat electricians the old bastards, 77th army infantry division. That is the unit Desmond doss served in. If you could contact him I would like to see the animation. The stuff those guys did was pretty brutal.
