Glad to see you get into the hooligan. When they are running in the Kenai River, they look like a long continuous giant pencil lead right next tothe shore. One scoop will literally fill the net to the brim and it's almost impossible to lift it up it's so heavy. You could fill your cooler in 10 full scoops. Glad you found them closer to home. There are spots in the valley rivers way upstream where they can be so thick, you'll run them thru the jet unit of a boat.

That was an amazing adventure, and a wonderful video. Many years ago when my work took me to Africa, we saw a mother elephant and 3 younger ones crossing the Zambezi River to get to a small island in the middle. They go under the water while breathing through their trunk then go under with their trunk, come up, and go down again. I was stunned how far they swam. A local had told us that the river was full of huge crocodiles who can attack and eat almost every animal who dares to enter the water, except elephants.

So majestical the creature in flight to have no fear of a human. Loved the excitement of Bo catching his own snack. Too funny! The Mother Moose & her 2 calves made it safely across 100' of river. Awesome fishing, we used to do the same thing when I was young, we went to Pt. Pelee Canada for smelt, you were allowed to use a seine net and there was no limit, one time 4 of us filled 6, five gallon buckets and a pair of leaky waiters. We got home at midnight, and it took us until 7:00 in the morning to clean them all, using scissors, they still run there but now you need a boat, because they are so much deeper. We just walked out into 4 foot of water and they were right there. And just like you guys, while we were cleaning them, one of us were flouring them up and frying them, we would cook, five or six dozen, this trip brought back so many good memories for me, awesome guys, thanks for sharing, again, all the best.

My husband and I just ❤️ watching everything the two of you accomplish together in alaska. We also look forward seeing the dog's have fun and explore each adventure in their own unique way. Especially loved seeing Bo get in there & decided to catch a fish! How exciting for him! Way to go big guy! The views are always picture perfect. ❤️.

When we smelt dipped in Michigan. We would dip toward the current. Fish would run right into the net. I have always caught more that way.

We called these river-run smelt when I was a kid in WA state. Dad always dipped where the bank was really steep, so he could reach deep into the river. The runs are almost gone now, WDFW only opened it for one day this March. We used to come home with buckets-full.

50 years ago I spent a summer straight out of college in northern Manitoba Canada above the 55th. Where you are, looks the same today. That's a good thing! And the fishing seems the same. Jack's under 2ft were thrown back, lol. Stay healthy! King Carter .... Canada

Reminds me of the smelt run in the streams around Lake Superior. Huge dip nets to bring them in, cleaned and cooked the exact same way. Great video, thanks

They look somewhat like the smelt we have in the great lakes. We live by lake Erie and have caught them on hook and line, but they run up the rivers. We eat them at Christmas time, especially Christmas Eve with other seafood. Lightly floured and fried without the heads. Yum

Hooligan seem to be an extremely close relative to Capelin caught in Newfoundland. Except capelin spawn on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. To my knowledge they don’t go upstream. Often they are salted and smoked with the heads on (sometimes even the guts in). The finished product is fairly dry. My dad still kept them in the freezer. Enjoyed toasted over a friend eaten head and all. They are actually quite good, somewhat jerky like! Love all you do
