Simplest OBD2 engine remapper yet, with actual canbus connection.

Yet another of these universal OBD (On Board Diagnostic) port engine remappers that claim to analyse your driving and then rewrite key parameters in your ECU (Engine/Electronic Control Unit) to offer greater power with less fuel.
I bought this one because it showed a picture of the PCB in the listing, showing that it uses an eight pin microcontroller and appears to have actual connections to the canbus network on the OBD port.
The power pin placement on the microcontroller is odd. I don't immediately recall a similar pin layout. It would be interesting to know if it's a standard device. It's not a Padauk chip as far as I can see.
In standby the module enters a passive mode at 9mA where it pulses the communication LED. When activity is detected on the canbus network it directly affects the green LED and after a short time triggers the power LED to come on and the communication LED to start flickering. If the canbus becomes inactive the unit goes into standby mode after about a minute.
Because the chip has a direct connection to the canbus network it is possible for a malfunction to take out the network in your vehicle and cause lots of random problems when the other devices on that network are unable to respond to the ECU.
The unit is fake. It's a placebo. To store suitable details for every single car since 1996 it would need to be able to identify models if it could read the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) code and then have a database of parameters that could be adjusted with a suitable tuning algorithm for every model. That's not viable for a little 8 pin chip and most cars don't have the facility to make significant changes to the ECU tuning settings via the OBD port.

I‘ve actually once DoS‘ed my own car while working on the OBD port. I‘ve tried creating my own fuel economy gauge and because I sent the commands too fast my car freaked out. The running engine just simply turned off and it gave me a few warning lights to enjoy. Stopped the script, unplugged the cable, turned off the car and restarted it and everything was back to normal. But that was certainly a shock moment.

Hi Clive, all the way through the 1960s '70s and into the 80s, there was a much cheaper way to make your car go faster.... You bought a roll of "Pinstripe" tape and stuck along both sides of your car - guaranteed to increase your top speed by up to ten miles per hour. Of course, if you only put it on one side of the car, it would go faster on the outbound leg of your journey, or on the other side, it would go faster on the inbound leg. If you wanted rally performance, you bought a much wider tape and stuck it all along the top of the bonnet, roof and boot lid. better still, stick some vinyl numbers on your front doors! These all worked equally well. All you had to do was to believe in unicorns and pixie dust.

This is one of those things that if you're a kind of shady mechanic and you see one of these on someone's car you immediately think "I can get away with charging this person for anything" and you end up getting a bill for rotating your spark plugs or changing your driveshaft fluid.

I bought one of these as a generic elm327 unit, for something like $13 US...I was testing some software and wanted a poorly rated dongle to see if I could make it work and at the same time, make my software more robust. But, in fact, the thing failed electrically. It went bad and did cause issues in my car that required more than one cycle of the key. You are 100% correct - as usual.

I don’t know for certain, but I strongly suspect they measure throttle response (possibly) and use an accelerometer (almost certainly) and possibly mileage driven to determine how aggressively one accelerates, brakes, and corners over a period of time as well as how much driving you do over a month - essentially testing for aggressive driving. These days they may as well use a smartphone app to record the same.

I've had to deal with a few people that had bought those and tried to tell them it all a scam but some people don't believe what you tell them sometimes I'll do a fuel consumption test to prove they don't work love the video thank you

When I worked on Cars. We did sell Power Programmers for Trucks and SUV's. But they actually did something. They were in the $300-$500 range. It was a much larger Box. It would actually save a copy of your program in the Programmer so that you could restore it back to factory default. Then you can go through the settings to change the things you want to do. But generally, to get the best performance, you would have to set it to Premium Fuel. At that point, you would have to fill up using Premium Fuel ONLY. No more Regular or Mid-range. They actually did do what they were supposed to do. Nothing like this little toy thing that is shown here. It does a whole lot of nothing.

I've used these devices for years even in non ECU vehicles very impressive mpg and severe power and bottom end torque. But now I run my car on hho only using jam jar with some 316l stainless springs inside it connected to the battery through a special on off switch it all cost a lot of money made by experts. I did want to make my own but I'm only a mechanical and electrical engineer.

Most modern cars have a dedicated diagnostic CAN-bus connected via a gateway, so a broken or sketchy device on the OBD2 port will not cause a warning light (unless you are deliberately sending packets to certain ECUs)

I love how the pushbuttons have the four legs like that. My new garage door opener has one of those 'smart' wall control panels so I couldn't just use a doorbell switch inside the house to open the door. Soldered my doorbell switch right to the contacts on that pushbutton and as far as it's concerned, I'm pushing the smart control panel's Open button.

I really like this theory. If so, the Can Bus is connected to I/O pins at 5 and 6. LEDs are connected to I/O lines at 3, 7 and 8. This microcontroller has on-board clock, RAM and a big EPROM so it is fully self-contained. This means that it could easily be talking to the CAN Bus and could actually be doing something. The next thing would be to analyze the CAN traffic to see what is happening. Good find.

@@Toobula: No need, no CAN-controller and no CAN-tranciever in that chip. You can find chips with built-in CAN-controllers but all CAN-trancievers are external. Also, crystal oscillator is missing...

@@bigcheese781 Not true. There are some micros with built in CAN transceivers. They are few and far between, yes, but do exist. Crystal oscillator is not an absolute requirement. It can run on the internal RC oscillator. Some have trimming registers for tuning, as well as PLL's for multiplying the clock. However you are correct that this micro is unlikely to have a CAN transceiver. So successfully communicating on the CAN bus would be difficult. I will not say impossible, as there is some trickery that could make it possible.

@@bigcheese781 I did not specify they were 8 pin, nor did you imply your statement was limited to 8 pin devices. But yes, not likely in an 8pin device unless it is a custom IC, and they def aren't doing that for these. Off the top of my head I think ST has at least one L99xx part with transceiver. I am unsure if the part is available outside of automotive agreement's however. I think maybe the EBV Epona line of automotive regulator IC's may have them, but I am unsure.

Interesting and insightful video sir. That thing is as basic as many of the ignition disablers I've encountered that used car dealers use. Those things are so annoying when they start going bad. They cause all sorts of running problems. I can only imagine that over time this bugger would do the same.

Me as well. I've found a few hidden with wires tapped into obd wires instead of port. Units like this do not allow the computer to go to sleep resulting in a current draw and if vehicle isn't driven alot causes battery to die.

I remember, back in the early days of Ebay, people were selling "performance chips" with ludicrous claims like +20BHP and the like, and it was just a 1w resistor that you connected in series with the intake air temp sensor, to fool the ECU into thinking its breathing colder, denser air and adding more fuel. Lots of people on the car forums back then swore they worked!

You can gain 150 hp by adding a 4" exhaust and chipping a 7.3L Ford super duty. Fact. You also need to add gauges to monitor your engine. The motors are extremely tuned down for long term reliability.

what is so ridiculous is all the auto manufacturers have hundreds of engineers all attempting to improve fuel economy, while maintaining power, each spending many hours are year doing so. Simply buying this $4 unit will learn your driving and improve fuel economy, while improving power, amazing how smart these designers are!

OBD2 started in 1995 for some Ford vehicles in the colonies. My 1995 Ford Ranger is full on OBD2, been told it's not but scanners read it fine and I've changed to a later EEC from 2001 for higher resolution timing control with no problems.

@@southjerseysound7340 There is a big difference between an actual genuine electric turbo and a glorified PC fan sold as electric turbo. While a PC fan just needs to move a lot of air around, a turbo needs to compress the air, which a PC fan by design just can't do.

Thank you for confirming suspicions. I'm a mechanic who saw these things and thought to myself yeah right first of all reprogramming like you said is quite geeki and can't be done with a cheap unit even if it is an off-brand one. In fact most tuning requires disassembling the computer and can't be done through the OBD port

Actually although the CAN bus can be expected to be firewalled off between the diagnostic and the engine section, and thus will not be used for programming in any official capacity or by tools intended for professionals, just about every single unit in existence has exploits which breach the firewall. Once you do these kinds of things, a hard brick becomes fairly probable. I ran into numerous security research papers. And still, these are all going to be fake, for so many reasons.

I think I've identified that chip: It's a Myanmar produced micro-controller TR-011-U. It has 4 GPIO pins, ISO 11898-1:2015 bus, 8Mb of RAM and a frequency of 600MHz. Really cool stuff!

Given how much data you can fit on a microSD card, I think it's theoretically possible to make a custom "universal" IC that does tune the ECU, but of course it would involve reverse-engineering the ECUs of thousands of models to figure out the undocumented commands or even exploits required to mod them... if only that theoretical world was reality ;-)

Modern cars have CAN at the OBD port (usually around 2005-2007 onwards, OEM and model specific), older stuff will have a CAN bus in the vehicle, but not exposed to the OBD port.

Kind of reminds me of an LED-blinky equipped lighter I once dismantled many moons ago, press the button to light the flame and the LEDs went into flickery blinky mode, and after a short while, they switched off, the chip was a blob-on-board though so no idea what it was, but that could be where they're getting the functions from... :P

Also, if you have an accident with one of these left plugged in and have to get towed/mechanic, I'd suspect your insurer might take it as a reason to refuse/restrict cover (even though it's doing zilch). Most insurers treat remaps/ECUs as mods in the UK iirc, so will bump your premium up a good bit if ones installed (despite them actually being fairly innocuous, and even practical for some models). Not sure if they routinely check for it though on vehicles involved in accidents, but I'm pretty sure a chunk device plugged into the OBD II would be noticed given its ubiquitous use in garages.

Yup, an excuse to wriggle out. I've heard them refuse to pay out for fire claims because the car has waterless coolant in it.

I bought one of these and mine works like a charm, I am getting almost 5 more miles per gallon on my 2005 Tahoe, I did have to wrap in in aluminum foil first, I think it was picking up too much interference from my cell phone, but once I did that it started really working, I have one on all of my cars including my wife's jeep, too soon to say how well it is working on that.

I've seen these devices advertised in automotive magazines. Some cost 100's of dollars. Have you taken one of those apart? Would like to know if the whole concept of controlling the car computer fro the OBD port is a real possibility. THX I like the video, keep them coming!

Only thing i have found that works , and its on diesels only i think is a chip box you install under the bonnet , connects to the common fuel rail plug then back into the loom. I think it fools the ECU into thinking the air temp is colder or something, maybe a few other things as well . They cost anywhere from £80to £100 plus but do work . I had one fitted to an x-type jaguar and there was a very noticeable difference in throttle response and acceleration , it was a little bit of trial and error to choose the correct setting for it , anywhere between 1 and 9 . 5 was best for general everyday driving , going higher and giving it a lot of wellie for a while would bring up the engine management light but no damage caused

I tried to get a work colleague to watch you're videos on these devices as he bought one for £1.99 and swore it works ... He wasn't impressed when a laughed in his face ... He still swears it's saving him fuel ... Psychosomatic me thinks...on the other hand the superchips bluefin I used on my ford makes a hell of a difference ...but it does cost ~£330-£500 depending on the car model.

That's a cute little "blinkenlights" unit. If anyone watched SMA's video on the Dodge Caravan that reset the dashboard and set the wipers running whenever the power sliding doors operated... That's what happens when your CANBUS gets tampered with. For best performance from a vehicle (acceleration, braking, fuel economy) the best thing ANYONE can do is keep current on scheduled maintenance. Regular oil changes, tune ups, and good quality fuel (from a major supplier) in addition to driving mildly (gentle acceleration/braking patterns) and not carrying more cargo than is necessary will be far more effective than any silly OBD-II dongle quackery can ever be. One-size-fits-all devices cannot take into account all of the variables than an ECM handles - each specific engine has its own mapping for air/fuel ratios, injector pulse timing, etc etc etc. Even the same exact engine used across multiple vehicles will have completely different programming. Any effect these modules have on a car is a placebo at best.

My performance booster chip came from The Royal Palace of Nigeria... it has an official seal of authenticity and only cost $65 per month. Not sure how much horse power it added, but customer support said they can double my gain any time I choose, by sending another $100 per month. It’s a bit expensive, but I could sure use the extra power.

Loading components on both sides is obviously more expensive... You have to stop bits falling off the first side when reflowing the second. The 7805 regulator should have a small cap on the input for stability. The choice of regulator package may be due to power dissipation to get vehicle "12V" down to 5V. As much as 16V is often seen on vehicle power supply rails.... with automotive rated components rated to deal with 60V load dump transients. Such transients occur when e.g a "mechanic" disconnects the battery while the alternator is trying to charge it.

I think I know what these units do - I too bought one out of curiosity, at a time when I had a recurring ECU error caused by a faulty Crankshaft Sensor. I was keeping an eye on the situation with an iCarSoft OBD Diagnostic Tool until the new sensor arrived, but I noticed that with the eBay unit connected, every couple of days the fault would be cleared briefly, before returning again. With or without the unit attached, there was a noticeable drop in performance when the fault was logged by the ECU, so is it possible that the eBay Unit just occasionally sends a 'clear all faults' code? Maybe the 'MCU' is a Pic chip of some kind? Reminds me of the one's they used to use for modding game consoles back in the day :) so just enough guts to send a clear code and the required confirmation code, based on elapsed time. I don't have the equipment to see exactly what happens, but I agree that there's no way these devices could re-program ECU Fuel Trims.

The MCU could never send data across Canbus with those 10k resistors in series, Canbus network devices are terminated with 120 ohm resistors so there is no way any mcu could pull the lines high or low through 10k resistors 😉

OBD connectors are usually on their own private network to the ECU. Any signals are probably copied over to that network, but if properly designed, damage to this network shouldn't take down any of the other networks.

Most modern cars have diagnostic CAN behind a gateway, so if your diagnostic tool (or any other crap plugged into an OBD socket) crashes, nothing happens.

Or the odb port cant Diagnose Abs Airbag or any safety related item because there is another diagnosis port in the engine bay. Still statisfies the odb2 norm to the fullest for road worthy tests

@@kitecattestecke2303 Haven't seen a port in the engine bay in ages, there's a few manufacturer-specified pins on the ODB2 port, so the main bus is usually accessed over that after doing a quick handshake.
