This video will show you how to gather fabric with a serger machine. I will show you gathering fabric techniques and how to make ruffles fast! This is an Easy way to make ruffles.
I will demonstrate with knit, rayon challis and cotton woven fabric.

Great tutorial. I’m glad you covered the needle tension = how much fabric to ruffle. That helped me a lot! I love the ruffle foot. I’m definitely going to have to invest in one.

I also have the Brother 1034d serger but I haven't used the ruffler foot on it. I typically use a Ruffler foot or a Gathering foot on my sewing machine. I'll have to try using the serger ruffler foot now that I know what can be achieved using it.

love your video. I have this same serger but I have trouble gathering. It starts out okay but since I have a long piece that I'm gathering quilting cotton, after a bit, it stops gathering.

Do I need a ruffling foot for my Baby Lock Enlighten Serger? That dress is precious! Lucky little girl who has a MOM who sews such cute clothes for her.

Hello, I have a ruffle foot for my brother serger but don't need it to do the ruffles...its used more for if you want to attach the ruffles to the fabric all at the same time...so I'm not sure that you would need yours or not. Some sergers don't allow the tension to be adjusted 🤷‍♀️ sorry, i wish a knew a little bit more about it.

Thank you ! i love baby lock and would love to have that serger but yeah the tension I think would be a problem because i use my serger all the time for gathers, i love making tier dresses for me and my daughter

@@notimetowork I've seen a tutorial on this using a babylock on KZfaq somewhere. They did not adjust the needle tension, but only the differential to 2. They also changed the width of the stitch if I remember correctly, but that's it. And it worked.

I don't disengage the knife...I just don't have the fabric get close to the blade...I keep it right there on the edge.

This was great. Thank you so much. How much fabric did you use for the bottom tier? Was it the same width as the original width of the first tier or did you use twice the width of the bottom straight edge of the first tier?

Yes, absolutely I would love to do that..in fact there is footage of me at the end of this video trying to do that...and I think it just takes lots of practice.

yeah that one did not get serged because it was just an example but yes I would go through and serge both pieces.

So on the thinnest fabric that gathered too much, you lower the needle tensions instead of lowering the differential setting?

no...you don't need to lower the cutting blade...just don't place the fabric that far over...keep it away from the blade

I found that thinner knits just don’t ruffle enough. I have a triumph babylock and it just doesn’t do a good job on thinner knits. Any suggestions?

So it isn’t necessary to finish the bodice raw edge to avoid unraveling?

yes you should finish all raw edges, I usually serge both raw edges then run them through my sewing machine...but in this scenario i was mostly focussed on showing how to ruffle it... (oops)

With any of these ruffles, you can pull out the needle threads and adjust the length of the ruffle longer or shorter to match the straight piece.
