We need more trains like this in Europe, long-distance, non high-speed, that serve big and medium centres in the Continent, and sometimes overnight!

well, high-speed nighttrains would actually be dope in my opinion. Its better than a 15 hour train ride. (exxept you're a train enthusiast ofc, but yk some people might use this route for business travelling...)

Like it used to be before the era of cutbacks and privatization. Look at timetables from the 80s and 90s - sure there was no high-speed back then (fastest was 160-200km/h) but the continental train network was far more comprehensive than it is now and every national operator ran extensive night train services. For that to happen again there would need to be a major political shift and the EU would have to give up its policy of enforced privatization and permanent austerity.

@@chrislumpgod I think that a high-speed night train would be good for some routes. A Nightstar brand was programmed in the 1990s for trains under the Channel. But in my opinion you could also make classic night trains go faster; I think you can cut some hours on this train between Paris and Strasbourg.

That would be a EC train, (for example Interlaken-Hamburg, loco hauled with SBB EC coaches). But i agree we need more of those again. There was even once a connection Basel-Bruxelles through France and Luxembourg:')

Another win for Nightjet! It's wonderful to see such an enthusiastic resurgence of night trains throughout Europe, and to see them so popular, particularly amongst young people. It really puts paid to myths that people don't want to travel on old fashioned trains anymore. The only thing Nightjet are still missing that would make their service truly perfect is to include a restaurant car on their trains. I understand that higher classes of travel get small complementary snacks and some drink service, and I get that during the worst of COVID group dining was a very bad idea. But with COVID on the ebb (or at least becoming a grimly accepted fact of life), it seems like a big hole not to offer food service to all passengers who can afford it, both from a passenger satisfaction point of view (16 hours is a long time to suffer if you did not think to pack snacks or drinks before boarding) and a missed opportunity for Nightjet to generate some ancillary revenue through food sales, not to mention the prestige if they can rise to ICE levels of cuisine. Also, a luggage van or combination luggage/coach car might not go amiss during the peak vacation seasons as people travel with more and larger luggage that may start to fill up a compartment fast.

If travelling in a seated coach it is advisable for at least one person in your compartment to be awake during the stop at Strasbourg and to stay alert for any thieves who might try to take advantage of the long stop. It's also best to keep your valuables in places where thieves can't so easily get at them and make a quick getaway, preferably keeping as many such items as possible on your person.

Hello Thibault, thanks again for sharing this! I have often wondered why our North American rail services do not adopt accomodations like this, or "couchette" seating for overnight or long distance trains. To me, an affordable alternative to roomette service would be welcome by passengers...

VIA rail has berths on "The Canadian" and I believe the "Ocean" as well. Amtrak doesn't have them unfortunately. On the subject of overnight trains, we could use more of them on this side of the pond, for example reinstating the Toronto-Chicago sleeper (or even the Montreal-Windsor) sleeper would be fantastic. We need more trains over here in general

When I traveled Europe on a Eurail pass years ago, we had similar compartments. On night trip, when four or so had arrived, filling it up with the seats down, we'd typically close the door and pull the curtains. It was off-season, so that worked fine unless the train was French with a strike happening. Then even sitting room was at a premium. At those times I was lucky be able to sit on the floor.

Great video as always, thanks Thibault. I think it's the deluxe cabin for me! I've only ever once travelled on an overnight train; in 1985 on a service from Basel to Calais Maritime, leaving Basel at 0130 a.m. Travelled in an ordinary SNCF compartment on my own for most of the journey. Took my shoes off and put my feet up on the opposite seat, but was told off by the train conductor. Then straight from the train at Calais on to the boat (the Chantilly). A long and tiring journey, especially as I wasn't feeling well and had cut short my Swiss holiday.

If you don't want to risk to get stuck in a full compartment with strangers you can book a private compartment from 100€ (for up to three passengers). Of course there are only a few of these available but you can sleep quite well if you have the "bed of seats" for yourself or share it with people you know, and it's cheaper than couchette or sleeping car.

Book early as NightJet is really popular. Was pricing a trip from Rome to Muenchen for May and already a couple weeks ago the sleepers sold out, prices in coach and coachette rose. Booked a Couchette, but would have taken coach if that was all that was left. The Coachette was still over a $100. less than flying and is one less night in a hotel. Great video! Thank you, Merci!

Thats the thing that i love if you travel long distances by train: You are meet very interesting people, have discussions or even play board or card games with them. i travelled from kassel to munich via ICE some years ago. A friend was coming from münster via train, we had a nice dinner in kassel. the ICE was late due work on the tracks and the high speed line had a partial maintenance so the ICE was routed via standard line. we startetd at 21:30 in kassel and arrived arround 01:30 in munich. but it was a awesome ride. we were discussing coups and revolutions of a forum based rpg that we play both for 4 hours straight and the best: after fulda we had the whole coach for us alone. It was a very nice despite the delay. at all it was a half night-train ride :P

Definitely the service will be next year too, maybe even expanded to daily. Depends on how fast the ÖBB will get their new Nightjet units, which are meant to replace these classic coaches on Italian routes, so they could be used on Paris and Bruxelles route, for example. From December 2023 the Berlin to Paris/Bruxelles route is supposed to start, too.

You were lucky to have a half-empty compartment, often the nightjet seating cars are booked out, or almost. I sometimes use the nightjet Graz - Zürich on the section Graz - Leoben and for that short section I don't reserve, I'm often in a compartment with five others. If you can occupy two seats and convert them to a "bed", you will notice they don't fold completely flat: Both ends are still higher than the middle. If you lie on your back that's awkward so you will need something to put under your knees, a cushion or piece of clothing. Some nightjets have converted ex-first class cars with only nine compartments (Bmz 29-91.5), those really allow you to stretch out! Otherwise you might have to fold yourself if you are tall. And good luck finding sleep in a small room with five strangers (might work if you all know each other well, or for a young family travelling on a budget).

9:26 6 hours? More like 4:45 h, even with all the restrictions the NJ has in France. Theoretically, the coaches could do 200 km/h and run on the LGV (as they do in Austria or Germany) and the journey time could go down to 3 hours, but because there is no suitable locomotive, the train will be stuck on the old line with 140 km/h max speed. 13:00 You passed another night train! I think LGV lines are specifically designed to be HSR, whereas lines in Germany are specifically designed to be mix traffic, with few exceptions. Oh also those “HSR” lines in Austria and Germany are usually just old mainlines that were upgraded. Besides LGV est is extremely busy so I think that they wouldn’t let such a slow train congest the line

@@justsamoo3480 The Austrian LGV in the video you just watched (Linz-Wien) was newly constructed for 200-250 km/h to add two new tracks to the Westbahn. Freight trains run on both the old and the new line, depending on where they fit. Also don't pretend that the LGV Est is extremely busy or that SNCF runs a lot of trains in general. Between 7:30 and 8:30 a maximum of 5 TGV arrive at Paris Est, while 1 daily service runs to Paris CDG and 1 seasonal service goes to Massy TGV. In the evening, no trains run from Paris after 21:00 (monday-thursday, saturday) or 22:00 (friday, sunday). With a little adjustment to the TGV timetables, it shouldn't be difficult to fit a 200 km/h train in there as it could be overtaken at any station on the LGV. However, as I understand it, getting a locomotive approved in France is not easy (especially for 200 km/h), so that's probably the bigger obstacle.

Great video. I rode the on old CNL train from Duisburg to Vienna in a double sleeper back in 2006. Shame this train does not have a bar/restaurant for such a long journey as it was loverly riding down the Rhine Valley with the large windows to look out of whilst having very nice food and drink. You certainly cannot beat the price but I would not fancy having 6 people in that compartment and trying to sleep. Riding in coach on Amtrak is much more comfortable unless you hit lucky with no one sat opposite you. Sleeper berths in Europe are generally much cheaper than in the US (even when the free food is taken into account on Amtrak) so I would probably stump up for one but the late arrival is not so good if you had a sleeper and thus has no seat when you woke up. Again Amtrak solves that issue with the bed becoming a seat in the day time. I remember the old day train from Vienna to Paris vv with its very smart deep red carriages, that was a joy to ride and had the name “The Mozart”. I have a big US trip in Feb/March riding 3 long distance trains so this wets the appetite still further.

ÖBB had to cut costs somewhere to make their night trains profitable. Hauling along a whole restaurant car plus staff simply doesn't work when it's going to be empty for most of the journey. But you can order a small selection of warm dishes from the sleeping car attendants (even if you are travelling in coach), which they then reheat just like it would be done in the restaurant car (i.e. same quality - which is actually quite good on ÖBB trains: they don't use microwaves but steamers, and the dishes are prepared fresh earlier the same day).
@baseballfan99

@@stephanweinberger I assumed it would be cost cutting. When Amtrak used steam heating it was pretty good to be fair certainly better than the current microwave offering East of the Mississippi.

@@silenthunteruk Then you'd have extra shunting and staff that has to stay overnight somewhere (unless you hire staff that happens to live near that intermediate stop, which would be an HR nightmare). Again: ÖBB is only able to run these trains because they cut costs as much as possible, without compromising quality too much - cost was the main reason why almost everybody else stopped operating night trains in the first place. Sure, a dining car would add to the experience, but having the same meals served in your compartment isn't too bad either.

Here's a tip. Make sure that none of these seats are reserved (could be hard on a train like this) and then unfold them all. You can set up a makeshift sleeper that way, while putting your luggage underneath unfolded seats. Czech Railways bought these cars second hand from Austria and I tried this trick in several trains there, works like a charm, and no one from the train crew bothered us :)

You see those little cases left to the compartment doors? There should be little piececes of paper with routes, on which a given seat is reserved to a traveller. If these are empty, you're free to do what I wrote in the comment above. The Czechs and Hungarians do care about such little pieces of information, unlike our train crews, who totally don't.

@@PrekiFromPoland Thanks for answering. I checked them as I boarded the train (I did Berlin-Wien last night) but they were all empty. I was all alone for the first hours but spent the night with other three people. Hi Thibault, as a rail expert, is there a reason why the sleeper cars are placed in the middle? Like, are they subject to less "shaking" for example? Or is it simply a matter of convenience? (or is it completely random?? 😅)

@@mysakus Check with ÖBB regarding schedules. There could be track work canceling trains. As for the additional expense of a compartment over a seat, I've found that the older I get the more I appreciate a good night's sleep - which can be worth any reasonable price. While on the Empire Builder I met a guy who was going in coach for two nights. He was on my connecting train (the Lake Shore Limited) for the second night, and he ended up paying $280 on the spot for a roomette because the first 24 hours in coach seats were that miserable.
