It's another weekly video! If you're newly subscribed because of the Mars video: Welcome!!! I hope you'll also be interested in these fantasy maps! I have plans for more real world based maps (and more Mars) in the future, but running the simulator on fantasy worlds is also an important part of this project for me! ❤️
I am still very busy in real life at the moment. But I had time to make some minor changes for this video! I cleaned up the code for governments and made it possible for governments to change in various ways. Can you spot them changing in this video? 🕵️
Also, the world was a highly rated world on a questionnaire I held on the Discord last month. It's a humid world with huge rainforests, centered around a single main continent! I hope y'all enjoy ❤️
Thanks to everyone for watching, liking, and subscribing! Y'all are the reason I keep at this project no matter how much real life obligations force me to work on other things sometimes. ❤️❤️❤️

I liked the bit of regional cultural differentiation that happened in the south of the big continent near the end (around Ogun, I think). Also thought it was cool how resistant the isthmus was to cultural change.

Thank you!!! ❤ This is a simulator I've been programming as a hobby project for almost five years now. I program the simulator, and then I have it create images which I turn into videos using video editing software. 👍 There's no public release of the simulator at this time, sorry. ❤ As this is currently still a hobby project, development goes in fits and starts as my real life obligations allow, so I release videos to show progress and cuss I think the videos are cool and I like making them. 😄

Does resource scarcity and crowdedness affect the technology level? Where there is a lot of fighting, I would assume that countries would try to come up with as many new ways to kill each other as possible.
@FWHSimulator
@FWHSimulator Ай бұрын
Yes. The basis of the simulation is that various kinds of warfare are the primary, though definitely not the only, factor spurring advancements. Overall it means that advancements occur faster on big or highly interconnected continents and slower on small isolated islands. Though, as the maps at the end show, technology spreads from tile to tile, so it will spread outward from the big continents to the more isolated islands if there are connections (like trade routes).

@@FWHSimulator This was an interesting simulation because the northern continent seems rather big like Europe but not too vast compared to other continents. However, they did get stuck in somewhat of a small state status. I don't know if colonisation or overseas empire building is possible in this simulation.
@FWHSimulator
@FWHSimulator Ай бұрын
@@gyurto Colonisation is definitely a feature! This just happened to be a simulation where colonialism was very minor. Other times it is much more pronounced.

amazing video! you should simulate earth again, its been a long time since the last time you did and i think itd be very interesting how the simulator handles earth and even how close or unclose it is to real history
@FWHSimulator
@FWHSimulator Ай бұрын
Thank you! I want to run an Earth map again, but it's really difficult to make one. I changed the map generator since last time I did it and the new maps require a lot more data than the old ones. There's a lot of high quality altitude/elevation data for Earth out there, so that's not a problem. But there is no good climate data or, even worse, good river data that I've been able to find. So I need to manually program code that can read low quality .jpg's and turn that into data the sim can read. That's just, like, several weeks worth of work based on the time I have available for the simulation right now. And I haven't wanted to drop everything and do just Earth map making these months. 😆 The other planets, like Mars and Venus, are not the same. Because I only need high quality altitude/elevation data and then the climates and rivers are fantasy and I just generate them the same way the non-real-life maps are generated. It's really needing to produce something that approximates real life climates and rivers for Earth that makes an Earth map so difficult. In the past I did an Earth map simulation where it was just the geography with fantasy climates, but I feel like I raised the bar when I got actual real life climates and rivers to work on the old version, so I don't want to lower it back down again. 😝

@@FWHSimulatorTheres GLWD v2, which is a dataset that has most lakes and wetlands, and has a TIFF format. Requires knowledge of GIS though.
@FWHSimulator
@FWHSimulator Ай бұрын
@@munastronaut8147 I think I used some of that for the old world map. But I don't have knowledge of GIS, moreover the new version wants to have flow data (the direction in which a river flows) and that's not part of those datasets afaik.

Very interesting! Is the fantasy world map custom made or is it procedurally generated?
@FWHSimulator
@FWHSimulator Ай бұрын
Thank you! ❤This map is procedurally made. I have adopted an open source project called World Engine to serve as a procedural map maker (with some of my own improvements, you can find a release of the map generator on the Discord). Older maps generally used some kind of random generation, but also involved a lot of manual labor on my part. Also, the current map generator allows for inputting custom height maps, which is how I was able to make the Mars map and the upcoming Venus map. There's real life high quality height data for those planets. The map generator is able to take that and generate appropriate climates and rivers and all that the simulation needs in addition to elevation. 👍

this is impressive! i'm aware the sim isn't public but i'd love to know what resources you've used. like, have you implemented some already existing algorithm(s) or are you "just" dwarf fortres-ing it and building everything from the ground up?
@FWHSimulator
@FWHSimulator Ай бұрын
Thanks! ❤ The map generator (as distinct from the simulator) is largely based on an open source project called World Engine. Like with most programming, various minor bits and pieces come from googling and finding stack overflow answers and other examples. Overall though, yeah I'm dwarf fortressing it and building everything from the ground up. I actually built the first version in Excel using VBA code (that's the first simulation video on this channel), then switched over to Python for the second version. That second version was coded really badly though as I did not know what I was doing. So what you're seeing now is the third version, still in Python but considerably more Pythonic and efficient in its coding. If I ever do another complete overhaul, I'd almost certainly try and switch to a different coding language like C++ that can run these kinds of simulations much faster than Python can. But I'd actually have to learn that language first, I ONLY know Python and mostly thanks to this project, so I don't intend to make that kind of a switch for a long time if ever. 😂 You'd be surprised how simple this simulator is when you get down to it. I don't think I've done anything particularly brilliant when it comes to math or algorithms, just made some distinct design decisions and dedicated a lot of time into getting things right. 👍

@@FWHSimulator damn, VBA? you have more patience than me. i think i've tried world engine before but i didn't really look at any wiki or docs so it was just throwing random commands at the wall lmao
@FWHSimulator
@FWHSimulator Ай бұрын
@@NICK.... VBA had its advantages for someone starting out with almost 0 coding knowledge. 1) It comes with an engine for visualizing your input/output as spreadsheets. 2) There's a ton of beginner-friendly documentation and tutorials out there for doing specific stuff in VBA. But it certainly wasn't ideal. My image output was basically an extremely janky trick which used Windows' print screen function to copy the screen as an image and then save that to a png. 😂 World Engine is indeed not very accessible, but I have good news there: I released a map generator on the Discord, and it's basically a GUI around World Engine + my own code for generating rivers. (Unsurprisingly, to me, my river generation code is by far the slowest and least optimized part of that program. 😂 )

Is 6:28 essentially the start of this world's Industrial Revolution?
@FWHSimulator
@FWHSimulator Ай бұрын
Yeah! ⬜ technology is meant to represent modernization and early industrialization. Basically real world Europe starting at about 1500 up to around 1850. So it unlocks long-range oceanic colonization and explosive population growth. Technology in the simulation is tile-based, not global. So while there's a technology bar, to really see the different types of advancements appear and spread you need to look at the Civilization panel in the four-way split at the end. That shows more clearly how and where advancements appear and spread over the centuries. 👍

@@munastronaut8147 Thanks! The map and world generation of Worlds was definitely an order of magnitude more advanced than mine. I don't know if I'd still be at this if not for people here and on the discord cheering me on 😂❤
