is it possible to do this with a fluid instead? kind of like a waterbending ability?

@@ucstudio256 For me, the smoke doesn't get right the curve, but instead has an offset to a side. So I gave up on it.

Try selecting that object and press Shift S then click on selection to cursor. this will help you make sure that the objects has no other offset if it has, it won't be snap to the cursor. in that case go to the object mode and press A to select the whole shape then move it to the 3D cursor. now come back to the curve modifier and select you deform axis. So now as you move it along that axis you'll see it lined on the curve perfectly
