Hey internet! Today we're here to take another look at Sine Compression basses! This sound is pretty similar to the stuff used by Frequent, Jade Cicada, Noisia, and many other neuro and drum and bass artists. In this tutorial, I'll be starting from a basic sine wave, and taking it all the way to heavy neurofunk bass madness by resampling and adding some herbs and spices along the way!
Stay classy!

You know back in the day, there was a Sampler called E-MU e6400 Ultra, (I still have mine). It has a proprietary filter setting called "Zplane Filtering" And you could take a normal bass sound and turn it into a Monstrous-Sick-Distorted-Evil-Beast of a sound. What you doing here sounds very similar to that "Zplane-Filtered" sound. e.g. Search YT for "Trifonic Twisted Leads Logic Pro" he resampled his E-Mu into Logic's EXS24 sampler, and it sounded EPIC. IMO, it an easier process than resampling over 6-times in Cubase... Anyhow, Gonna have to make some new Zplane-Filtered Bass sounds now. Thanks for the Inspiration and video, and as always, great job!

Haha been lusting after an EMU myself for years, I think once we move and we're a bit more permanently located I may pick one up for nefarious bass design purposes. Love the sounds of those filters and the overdrive. I've seen that Trifonic video many times haha, and actually that's where I picked up on the 3x2 filter of Kontakt to create some faux z-plane filter madness. But, one of these days I'll have to get an EMU if I can find one in good condition!

Also how do you capture your screen for recording? And do you run ableton simultaneously to record your voice in sync?
@VenusTheory
@VenusTheory 5 жыл бұрын
Yo dude! I use OBS to capture my screen, and then Voicemeeter Banana and Virtual Cable for my voice and to route the DAW audio to OBS. Then, I have a sidechain set up in OBS for talking. Might make a tutorial on it at some point!

i like your style of Sine Compression,b ut why you use a notch filter in stead of using the Cubase EQ? there u have up to 4 parametics "Filters"
@lamusicish
@lamusicish 2 жыл бұрын
filters are not like EQ even they seems the same. One most important thing is, filter's freq (or cutoff) is based on key and polyphony, for example, you set a notch's cutoff at 440Hz, then set keytrack to 100%, now play and hold A3, A4, A5, you will get three notch filters each with their own cutoff (220, 440, 880Hz), if you use EQ, you just cut 440Hz in the Audio.

Nice. Can I just ask why you didn't do render in place each time?
@VenusTheory
@VenusTheory 6 жыл бұрын
Hey dude! Usually when I'm doing basses like this, I do it all in a single session and record each pass manually so I can go back just in case I screw up or want to repeat the processing chain with a different sound. Bouncing in place is another good way to achieve the same thing though!
@MarkDanov
@MarkDanov 5 жыл бұрын
@@VenusTheory when you render in place, you can leave the original untouched (just on mute, for example), so you don't lose anything, just save time instead. I have mine on a keyboard shortcut (shift + alt + r) and it's just sooo convenient, I highly recommend it!

Hey VT, really liking that you went back to the whole sine compression stuff! It's a really creative way of getting some interesting bass it seems! Just a quick question, I use FL, so what would I use for movement in the sound, such as automating a notch/comb filter? Would I need to go out and get plugins to do this or is there any stock way of doing it? Sorry I know you're an Ableton user! Just sometimes hard to keep up with the stuff from a different DAW when you're not 100% sure on everything :p loved the vid!
@splatsquatch3934
@splatsquatch3934 6 жыл бұрын
this is cubase! not ableton. And the plugins used in the video are a brand by the name of kiloHearts, theyve got an affordable and sometimes free product line, otherwise any filter will do-- im sure FL has one
@VenusTheory
@VenusTheory 6 жыл бұрын
Hey dude! For sure, glad you liked the video! With FL, I would assume the way to go with this would be to create a Patcher instance, and use the EQ (forget if it has a special name, maybe it's just called EQ) and write automation for that with notches/peaks, or use something like fruity filter / lovephilter to do other filtering and whatnot. Should definitely be doable with stock plugins! Cubase just lacks an actual filter plugin, and the EQ can't be automated without artifacts so I use the Kilohearts filter (very awesome/cheap) instead.

Tweak the cut off on serum, then on the left hand top side of FL click on [tools] - [last tweaked] - [create automation clip]. An automation clip for the cutoff will appear in the Playlist. You can do this for any previously adjusted knob in any Vst within fruity loops.

Yo, frequent has a rack which is mapped to your midi device and doesn't need resamplig up on his channel.
@VenusTheory
@VenusTheory 6 жыл бұрын
For sure, that's definitely another way to do it if you're an Ableton user! His rack is really well designed for this stuff. You could also do it without resampling by just setting up macros or something in Patcher in FL, or with Quick Controls in Cubase!

I liked to your process but like his whole original point I feel was to go kinds insane with it. I like your tailored approach though. I just went through mr Bill's course and realized tho that in terms of bass music there is no rules and you often come up with crazier results when you just experiment. Idk I guess it's just me but I prefer excessive automation and driving the daw to complete insanity until I find what I like and processing it for a track afterwords

For sure - this is mostly a video about showcasing the process and core ideas so that people can then take it and run with it. It's always best to get creative and see where different ideas lead than to just straight up copy a tutoria, which is why I try to demonstrate concepts more than super specific ideas/settings in videos.

I don’t think you understood the point of the video. it’s showing you the process of getting the fundamental of the sound down. Yes experiment as you please but if you can’t get the sound you want what exactly are you experimenting with lol
