Susan Hayward used to say she would have preferred to win her Oscar for this film. She was great...the scene in which she is stumbling around town in broad daylight before she falls over a barrel is actually quite startling.

Oh yes, she is absolutely terrific in this movie! I still think she should have won the Oscar for "I'll Cry Tomorrow"! She's absolutely stupendous!!

She moved with assurance, and strength. And incidentally, whoa... she was a belter!!! A long ago friend was happy to be one of the medical people who looked after her, at the end of her life (He was a male nurse). He remembers how sweet and gentle Ms. Hayward was. Great lady..

Johnny Green, the musical director for this movie, was the one who suggested that Susan Hayward do her own singing. Kudos to him.

When she finally snaps with her mother & has her big meltdown, that is truly an Oscar winning performance. This is such a great movie. My only complaint is that Susan recorded all of the songs, but they decided to go with the original Lillian Roth recordings instead. And that's sad, because Susan actually had such a beautiful singing voice, and was nearly spot on with her impersonation of Lillian.

My all time favorite golden Hollywood film. Susan was brilliant in this role in every scene.

This is one of my favorite Susan Hayward movies. And she is doing her own singing. It baffles me why her vocals were not used for "Valley Of The Dolls"...she could have pulled it off that's for sure. Anyway, this movie shows just how dramatic she could be. The best scene is with her and Jo Van Fleet during that "argument"! Boy, do they tear up the screen...it's so good! Thanks for uploading and sharing this fantastic scene from "I'll Cry Tomorrow:! PS: Virginia Gregg brought me here!!

Theres a difference between being able to carry a tune and being a singer… Miss Hayward was a singer… no amount of coaching would've gotten the performance out of her vocally that she accomplishes is in the final bars of this song. That growl is astonishing.

She did a pretty fair job with the vocal. It's a shame Hollywood wouldn't let her own voice be used in several other films.

Susan has a great voice, I don't understand why they decided to Dub her singing in Valley Of the Dolls.
@jamesryan6008 Жыл бұрын
One reason is that she was hired after Judy Garland was fired so there was no time for any rehearsals.
@bobbermel741610 ай бұрын
In Valley of the Dolls she was dubbed by Margaret Whiting

Yes, that was weird. She sure could sing. But in many of her "singing" roles she was dubbed. Not clear why.

@@boinx1234 Sorry, my fault for being too cryptic. I wasn't denigrating your tinting work, I was commenting on the lack of color in the cast. :) Of course this movie is a product of its time and is based on real events in the life of Lillian Roth, so this scene, to whatever extent it actually occurred, is probably an accurate depiction. But still... Given the style of the number, and viewing it outside the context of the entire film (which I haven't seen), that was the main thing that struck me.

Odd how they gave it a completely 1950s jazzy rendition which has nothing to do with the original 1930 foxtrot. And the setting/staging has nothing in common either with the original in the movie "Honey" (1930).

I understand that Hayward sang this song herself. Not a bad rendition, I didn't know she could sing as well as she did in this clip. However, her dancing is below par and her lip syncing is painfully obvious.
@boinx12344 жыл бұрын
She did sing it herself. I had to synch the stereo track myself, so judge me not her! Here's the original. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o9eBiNOerafPgps.html

@@boinx1234 I can't honestly address the issue of Hayward's lip-syncing since I now know that you altered the sound track. But it's irrelevant anyway she still did a "bang-up" job singing the song. All in all you did a good job.

It's so frustrating that Susan had such a beautiful voice & recorded all of the songs, but they used Lillian Roth's original recordings instead. Susan Hayward was so beautiful, and delivered one or her greatest performances playing Lillian Roth. As much as I love "I Want To Live" & "With A Song In My Heart", "I'll Cry Tomorrow" was Susan's best movie of her career. But, I must give her dues for her campy performance in "Valley Of The Dolls", performing"I'll Plant My Own Tree". As rotten a song it may be, it's just as good!
