So heart-wrenching 😢 All these young boys , bright smiles on their faces . How many of these boys made it back home ? War is truly an evil act .

@@AidaJaffar-hp3cz Yes I'm serious. Did i made wrong statement in the above? Singapore was a third-world country when Singapore was under British rule. We are glad that Lee Kuan Yew bring SG from the third world to the first. Approcx 90,000 British, Australian, and Indian garrison fighting with Japanese during WW2. If you are not sure, please go and find out.

I did not know there was a tram running back then. I wish all these buildings can be preserved but they chose to tear them down! What a loss! There could have been a Old Singapore district now which will be absolutely charming.

My parents worked there in 1959 at Raffles Hotel in a show. and we lived in that hotel I still remember it well I was 11 years old. There were a lot of poor people and it wasn't very clean Lots of people from India. Very hard life if you were poor. The British colonized Singapore with their arrogance. They lived in luxury. The best sweet and sour shrimp I ate in my life.was at a restaurant near the boat docks. Those were the good old days there if you had a good means of work.

that's because the British had been developing Singapore from 1819. Almost a hundred years before some of these pictures were taken, a lot can change.

Interesting compilation, but not strictly accurate. Several photos were from Malaysia (or Malaya as it was known back then), not Singapore. Penang, Perak, etc have never been part of Singapore.

@@StruanRobertson29Japan had control of the air and the water supply in Malaya. Surrender was likely the option at the time that saved the most lives. If that is a failure then so be it. But the constant reminder of ' failure' becomes a form of racism. Do the Dutch remind of us of Arnhem at every turn? I have a relative named on the Kranji memorial as his body is still missing.
