Singapore Old Images and Lost Memories , in some Singaporean from Geylang Serai , Changi, Katong etc , Indeed those were the days of old never to come back again! Brought back many happy memories of my childhood days, during the kampong day.

I was born in singapore in 1960. In 1970, I moved to Malaysia. I lived in Clementi Estate from 1960-1970. I went to Sekolah Melayu Wessex Estate (SMWE), Singapore. Since moving to Malaysia, I haven't seen my school friends anymore. I realy want to meet them. If you have friends who went to school at SMWE Singapore in 1969, standard 3, at that time, please dm me. I have too many memories in Singapore. Thanks for this video.

Old Singapore was totally aman Prof. Aman, thank you so much. I did not know Teban was like that then, what a discovery even for me, who stayed for about two decades in Teban Gardens. Every other shot I could easily relate to and gets me uneasily nostalgic. The soulful Malay songs beautifully captures the friendliness of those times. Of whatever ethnic background, the older peoples of Singapore were truely kind-hearted and even then they were highly civilized for their days and this comes through your visuals. Singapore should have modernized without losing those fine harmonious and value-rich atmospherics. Unfortunately, today's Singapore is getting richer in substance only to get poorer in humanistic spirits !

I am not in the position to judge. However, I have a strong feeling you are right. Looking at this and other historic films, I do think that it would have been better to retain more of the original flavour, and modernize more sensitively.

Prof Aman is an amzing man, Thank you for displaying these wonderfully produced old photographs. a pleasure to see but makes me sad, to see that all this has gone and Singapore has now become sterile and like featureless compared with the old days of the fifties. It lacks identity now and is sterile, although safe, clean and wonderful, however I yearn for old days.

Yes but as an An Moh /Mat Salleh who loves Singapore and Malaysia my visit to Ubin two years ago was spolit, the old Rubber Plantation wasn't there, the road across the island was barbed wired each side, and the old kampong I spent time catching prawns no longer there. Too many drunken Europeans at the bar when you step off the small Ferry Boat from Changi Pt, spolit the atmosphere.

I lived in Singapore in my childhood from 1963-66 and I have such happy memories. Singapore in 2020 is barely recognisable....and it seems to be built for international travel and tourism all the villages are gone...presumably the residents forced into high rise apartments. The Singapore I remember is gone forever.

PAP will not like such videos Bcz it can inadvertently be opening a Can of Worms …. Maybe make an Episode Covering the Phenomena surrounding How Significant Arab Land Holdings Mysteriously Disappeared from Singapore after LKY took over 😂. ie. Rumour has it , immediately after Independence, LKY passed 2 Bills ( Land Control Act & Land Acquisition Act ) that Crippled Arab Landlords so LKY can Loot , Plunder & Redistribute Arab Ptys to his Cronies…I believe there is Substance in these Claims 😊

Thank you for sharing this video. We have a framed photo of old pasir panjang village given by my husband's uncle (Othman Wok. Died at 92-93yo in 2018). His father was a teacher (English and Malay languages I think) and also principal in a primary school in pasir panjang (died young at 45yo). I remembered growing up in the 1970s and 1980s when kampung were still around. My father was a carpenter from Solo, Indonesia who came to Singapore 1940s onwards I think. He and other Javanese friends built kampung houses: kampung Tempe, kampung Cantek lama, kampung Cantek baru, Onreat Road, Malcolm Road, Mount Pleasant, Lorong Halwa, Stevens Road, Fernhill (I think), Lim Chu Kang and a few kampung places that I don't remember. Mostly in districts 10 and 11 except Lim Chu Kang which was a HUGE kampung settlement. I also visited my grandfather who lived in Kaki Bukit. The kampung settlement was huge too ! Grandfather lived at Jalan Perwira. We would board bus no. 50 or 51 from Outram HDB estate till the bus depot. Then, we walked up the slop a bit about 10 mins to grandfather's house. Those were fun days. No worries at all. Kids run anywhere and come home safe at the end of the day (before maghrib).

I believed ur late grandfather and his javanese friends built my late grandfather HJ Hassan and HJH Maimunah attap house at kampung lorong halwa (near a big well for all villagers to bath and do laundry). The attap house are the one nearest to P.I.E with the big longkang infront of it. Alot of villagers used it to wash laundry there too as the water are so clean. To enter the village, either thru MT. Pleasant (alot of chinese graves) or thru Onraet road (behind police academy) before I.S.D detention centre was built. They were relocated to hdb flat at Toa payoh lorong 1 opposite the bus interchange back in the 80s. Now the hdb flat also gone. But i do visit Jalan ampas at Balestier road when im in Singapore though. 👍👍👍👍👍

@@aussierheinhardt4390 Oh ! Wow ! It's my almarhum father and his team who helped build the kampung houses. Apparently, one if his team was my ex-husband's grandfather named Juadi. Yai Juadi and family used to live in Sixth Avenue opposite kampung Tempeh. They moved to Kampung Wak Selat in Kranji because they couldn't stand the constant floodings whenever the rain falls! During my childhood, I would follow my mother to most of these villages to visit my parents friends who were actually owners of houses that my father and team built. They became friends. We do not have cousins from my father and mother sides. They came here alone and met in Singapore. My father was called Wak Ramli/Pak Emi. My mother was called Kadirah but her real name is Su'ini. I remembered when lorong Halwa was split in two. The government was constructing the first highway which is then named PIE. I walked on the quite sticky muddy sand to go to the other side of lorong Halwa in 1975/76 I think, on the right near Mt Pleasant side which is after Lorong Halwa. I will ask my mother if she remembers your grandparents. Take care !

@@ummiramli6554 if she ask which attap house, just tell her the house for my late grandparents are situated beside P.I.E behind a two storey grocery shop. The 1st floor owned by the chinese shop owner while 2nd floor was rented out to my family. Opposite my grandparent attap house is a friendly chinese family which owned few dogs (they never bark at us cos my grandfather used to feed them), their house was made of brick (cos they are humble rich). The walkway infront of my grrandparent attap house leads up to the old perigi where all the kampung people meet to take their morning shower by using rope and a metal tin attached to scoop the perigi cold water. My late grandfather was a gardener before he passed away before they relocated to Toa payoh in the 80s. My late grandmother passed away in the late 80s during breast cancer removal.

Later while I was studying in Australia, I came back and did some industrial practical training in Singapore, and I saw the nice East Coast Parkway which goes up to Changi airport. I wondered where the beach had gone? Only later someone told me, it has gone. The landfilled built for the ECP Highway had sacrificed that beach of Tg Katong.

Thank you for the sweet memories of my childhood years from 1957 onward. I really miss those simple days and when 5 cents is bigger then bullock cart.

In the 70s, I was in primary school. My teacher told me, she buy ice batu kepul (iceballs with lots of colourful syrup) for 5cents. 😁 That was in the 50s-60s I think. I didn't know her age then.

These are 'love hate' sceneries to me. Some sweet cheerful, some scary sad worrisome memories. It would be good for Singapore to progress, yet keep some old villages as memory icons for our young people to see how far we have progressed.

I hope that the ruling PAP government recognize and respect the Malay the original people of Singapura before the British and later on by the PAP...The malays are simple people and was very accomodating to then Chinese imigrants from China. Now they lost everything due to their kindness and sincerity.Special priveledges should be rendered to the Malay people.

Sharip Huddin Yeop Omar The malays were given free educations and given priorities over the rest in Singapura education systems. Everones just have to move and stay abreast on progress. Time kills everything at the end of the day not the Chinese.

I couldn’t bear to see Singapore today! I lived with my parents in Johore Bahru in the early 50’s and we often shopped in Singapore. My memories for Malay and Singapore are still vivid and so to return would be unbearable. They say one should never go back and I do believe this to be true, unless you are prepared, emotionally, for the huge changes. Keep your memories intact, for once disturbed they will become the proverbial house of cards.

Terima kasih, Prof. An excellent production. For almost every scene depicted in your presentation, there is at least one, or two, interesting story that needs to be told about it. Not to mention the very folksy nostalgic music that goes with it in the background. Kudos to the late Kartina Dahari of the Ambassador Hotel (Katong) days. Majulah Singapura!

Hi Nordin I don't think forgotten is the word, they never knew 😂. Only ppl like us who had lived through the transitional years will remember the good old days playing spiders, ye-ye, 5 stones, ga-seng, kuti-kuti, bottlecaps etc. I felt nostalgic after watching this clip. It felt like watching a old Hollywood movie but with us as actors in it this time😊. Thanks Professor for bringing back fond memories 😊👍
