Math is one of our favorite subjects, but it hasn't always been that way. Last year was a huge transition year. This year, we have begun incorporating 2 math curricula in our homeschool. This video outlines how we use both Singapore Dimensions and Beast Academy for fifth grade math.

So glad Ellie encouraged this video 🤣 Using more than one resource for math is Golden! It helps give us a broader view of the topic. You know I LOVE math so this was awesome to see!

She is enjoying doing math this way. I really think that the "break" with the graphic novel of Beast Academy is just what she needed. I am also learning ways to look at problems because they teach so much critical thinking!

You are very welcome! I have another Beast video, more of a review of Beast Level 3. It's a fun curriculum! E really enjoyed the graphic novel format.

We’ve found that we need more than 1 math curriculum burning knew we could as I did as a kid. I’ve found topic workbooks for math and it’s helping to fill in gaps.

You encouraged me to go for Singapore math and I love it and I haven't looked back. However I did miss the spiral aspect so I stuck with abeka also. I like they get to look at the way a problem can be solved but I also like they get a quick little review if time and fraction and shapes etc etc often. Best of both worlds

Thank you so much! It has been working well for us and we're going to keep doing it as long as it is working. My daughter is thriving in math right now. She is understanding the concepts in Singapore Dimensions faster and better than she used to and the way Beast Academy addresses what would be review for her is working. Thank you for watching! I hope you're having a great weekend.

It is so much fun! Each of the beasts have different personalities and they explain concepts in pictorial format that makes you think.

I am coming from Abeka math and looking at Dimensions to start this coming year at 4a. I have always had my kids do all of their Abeka homework, but after seeing so many different people say the workload is overwhelming…it makes me nervous because there isnt a spiral approach of review yet there is so much work. I cannot do year round schooling. What do you advise to make sure I keep giving my kids a solid math education as far as what you do for workbook/textbook/intensive practice….and do you still think to additionally do Beast Academy for the spiral? I dont want to do too little, but I want to not go overboard and burn everyone out with overkill.

We are year round homeschoolers (although we do take quite a few extended breaks from official curriculum in the summer). I would not try to do Dimensions and Beast Academy in one academic year if we weren't year round homeschoolers. It's just too much. Singapore Math offers Mental Math workbook for Grade 4. We include it as part of the spiral approach. I have found the "What's My Number?" Board from Hello Fifth on Teachers Pay Teachers to help with some of the spiral and nice review. Other than that, I include free seasonal math worksheets as review/spiral. I have an intensive practice workbook from Singapore, but we haven't used it. I'm keeping it just in case we need to pull it out in the next couple of years. The transition that we made from Abeka to Dimensions in 4th grade was not an easy one. Abeka focuses on memorization while Dimensions focuses on understanding the why/concept. I'm very thankful we made the transition, but it did not come without difficulty, especially understanding the bar modeling since it was brand new for my daughter.

Thank you for the thorough explanations on both. I have a rising 5th grader that loves math & is above grade level for math. I do not like spiral layout for him. Do you have suggestions on math that is mastery?

Singapore is a mastery approach. Have you looked into their editions? For his grade level, you may want to look into Singapore Dimensions or Singapore Math in Focus. Please let me know what you decide to use or if you have any questions.

We are like this for language arts - using so many different curriculums together to make it all work best for how my 5th grader learns. How long would an average Beast Academy lesson take your daughter to complete? I keep looking at it for my son who loves math. We are using Saxon as our core but BA looks so fun and teaches in a different way.

Beast is fun and it definitely teaches math in a unique way! The guide normally takes about 15 minutes to read per lesson. The practice book can take a while because they have quite a few problems in each section. We often split the practice into 2 days, about 20-30 minutes each day. However, there are definitely days where she just does the odd problems or the even problems so that it doesn't seem so overwhelming with the number of questions. Hope you're having a great day!

Hello Jen! I wonder Why you started with BA Level 3 but not level 5 for your 5th grader?

Great question! I wanted something that was easy and fun for her. We did it along with Singapore Dimensions. Dimensions was our primary math and where I was looking for her to be introduced to new concepts. I thought Beast at a younger level would be good review and have fun puzzles for her to do so that we could have review. For the most part, it was good. If I was using it as our primary curriculum, then I wouldn't have used Level 3.

Thank you so much!!!!! I will talk to my daughter and see if she is game. We use a lot of manipulatives in Dimensions, which help with the lessons as my daughter loves anything that she can "play" with.

Any particular reason for using Dimensions over Primary Math? Do you plan on using AoPS prealgebra after 2 years or so? You can find mental math level 5 here: www.rainbowresource.com/product/049617/Singapore-Math-Mental-Math-Grade-5.html

Thank you so much for the link for mental math! We are going to use Dimensions for 6th grade. I chose Dimensions over Primary Math mostly because Dimensions has more grade levels. Right now, AoPS is at the top of my list for where I think we will transition, but I'm not totally sure.
