Singapore Primary 2022 vs Math With Confidence Comparison

This video I'm sharing things I've noticed that are similar and different between Singapore Primary 2022 and Math With Confidence.
At the time of this video, I have a 3rd grader using Primary 2022. We switched him over to this from the US version when it came out, and I like it more. We also have a 2nd grader and kindergartener using Math With Confidence, and I've used that program since last year when my daughter was in 1st grade.
I have a strong preference for MWC due to it's awesome Instructor's Guide, visuals, and engaging games. But it is worth noting that the way addition and subtraction are taught in MWC is basically the same approach Singapore math uses. Multiple ways are taught, and eventually the child decides their preference. Kate Snow highly recommended Singapore Math on her blog prior to creating her own curriculum.
In a nutshell, I think she's created a math curriculum similar to Singapore that's easier to teach and more fun to do. But yes, it's a bit lighter. Also, Singapore has a gazillion ways to supplement and add more math in, which is not so with MWC.
Both rearrange numbers to help with mental math. Both use 10 frames and place value blocks often.

Thank you for this video. It helped reassure me that switching my son from Singapore Math Dimensions to Math With Confidence was the right choice. I was having the same problems that you were having: the teaching style I didn’t understand, the busy teacher’s guide, the lack to fun activities to solidify the concepts, oh and the length of the lessons is also twice as long I feel with Singapore Math. I started using MWC for first grade about one month before we took winter break and my son loved it, he just would like more practice problems but all of our previous issues are gone. We’re going to keep Math With Conference 😊.

Very helpful for me as I've watched so many videos on math curriculums in the past few weeks.. This was super helpful. Thank you- I'm just about sold for Math With Confidence! PS kept pausing your video thinking my kids were making noise after bedtime- realized it was the background noise in the video- Hahah!

Choosing a math curriculum is tough! Hope you find a good fit. And cracking up about the background kid noise comment because sometimes when I’m editing a video I’ll take my headphones off to listen for the kids thinking the same thing, then realize it was in the video!

Thanks for your feedback! We’re still using both, with diff kids, and the Singapore teachers guide is still making me twitch too 😂 def not my favorite and somedays I don’t even use it. But I’m trying not to switch at 4th grade. Each switch comes with its own difficulties it seems. MWC is a fav here! Hope you find a good fit!

Do you know about the Wisdom Wonder Project? They produced videos on KZfaq teaching Singapore math through level 5. They’re great! Might be helpful to avoid the dreaded eye twitch scenario! I’m currently using Math U See, which is great too, but was looking for something a bit more “colorful” for one of my learners. I’ll probably end up just continuing it through this school year, but you know, it’s that half way point in the school year when you become quite sure that the grass is greener in another book 🤣

Thanks so much for this comparison. My 1st and 3rd grader are using Singapore math and I felt the exact same way about teaching addition! This is my first year homeschooling but my 3rd grader used Singapore at his previous school so I just went with it for my first grader too. I found Addition Facts that Stick and used that too. I really think he would like Math with Confidence and I didn’t realize it was also by Kate Moss until watching your video. My 3rd grader sounds similar to yours and we will keep going with Singapore although we took a break and used Multiplication facts that stick to help him memorize those facts.

Thanks for your comment! Can I ask how did multiplication facts that stick work for you? We are just getting to multiplication and division with my 3rd grader using primary 2022 and I feel like we should stop and memorize some skip counting songs at a minimum and possibly also work on memorizing the facts too. There’s really not much hand holding there in Singapore or advice for how to do that so thinking we’ll use Kate snows multiplication facts that stick before moving much farther. I’d love to hear how it went for your 3rd grader!

@@LizBlueandHazel Multiplication Facts that Stick worked really well. We took a break from Singapore when we got to the x 6, 7, 8, 9 unit and used MFTS exclusively. We are on our last week and then will go back to Singapore. I can’t say for sure how much he has memorized and how much he is skip counting in his head. That’s ok with me. We will probably do a review sheet of multiplication facts once a week going forward. I bought Division Facts that Stick as well but I don’t know if we will need to use it or not.

Thank you for your videos! Close to finishing MWC kindergarten w my 5 year old. We love it! My boy learns quickly so sometimes I wonder if we should do something more challenging. Then I remember he’s not even 5 1/2 yet and there’s no need to try to make it harder. Already have grade 1 and 2 for the future. Will also use it for my 3 yo when the time comes.

Thanks! My 5 year old loves it too. Yes the beginning on k was VERY easy, but we have also had chapters where we stayed put for a bit longer so it has gotten harder for him towards the end!

Wow! Thanks for your video. We’ve been using MasterBooks and have loved it (I love how it’s easy and open and go. My son loves the stories and the simplicity of it all). But now that we are in the beginning of multiplication in 3rd grade, I’m desiring a different curriculum. It’s not teaching my son how I feel he needs. I searched a lot and decided on Singapore 2022. I’m LOVING it! It’s exactly how I’ve personally desired my child to be taught. I also just bought Kate’s book, “Multiplication Facts that Stick.” It’ll be a great combination.

That seems like a great combo and i hope it goes well! I really like that with Kate’s Facts That Stick books you get pretty much most the games in the curriculum which nicely compliments the lack of games I see in Singapore 2022.

I find it interesting that middle of the road is a bad thing. With Singapore we have personally been using it half a grade down, bc it's been developmentally more appropriate here that way, so middle of the road for most kids is likely perfect :) we enjoy MWC and PM2022 has also been a good program with our older kids. I prefer the layout of it to dimensions where there were more books to juggle.

We’ve been half a level down with my oldest so far in Singapore too. And yes to middle of the road being an ok thing for Math With Confidence! Every program will have strengths and weaknesses and MWC has nailed the math facts and number sense to me! What’s harder is having confidence as a parent to know what’s clicking for your child and what to do if it’s not.

Singapore Math is a different way of learning but we're using it since my eldest was 3 years old and she loves it.

So awesome she likes it! We’re in level 4 now and it’s really picking up. We’re thick into learning bar modeling for multiplication and I’m seeing how much more valuable the home instructors guide is now with that!

@LizBlueandHazel I'm glad you're seeing the value of the manual. We always use it along with the lessons. Modeling in Math is a great way to learn. Singapore Math also has an online component, but we haven't tried it.

4:41 Just FYI, they do have kindergarten A&B in Primary 2022! The original Primary US edition doesn’t. I think this was a really thorough review! You really did a good job demonstrating the differences in how the guides leads the instructors to interact with the child. I think that interaction is key to helping the child receive the information…. Regardless of how good the “method” is on its own. Kate snow seems to have married rightstart and Singapore and made it easy to use for a much more broad audience. Math with confidence is what I recommend the most to friends in real life, even though it’s not what I use with my son!

Thank you for pointing out primary 2022 does have level k, not US primary, that’s actually really important to know! And yes, even though Singapore works for my oldest, same as you I tend to point people to the user friendliness of MWC if they aren’t sold on Singapore.

This year, I am using Math with Confidence K as pre-k math program for my daughter and it is going really well. I went into it planning to potentially spread it out over two years, however, we are on track to finish this school year and plant to do 1st Grade MWC for her Kindergarten year. Doing it this way will “solve” the “issue” of MWC being a middle of the road rather than more challenging program. I previously use MWC K with my older child, as his K math, but it was not as great a fit as he isn’t as into games.

So true, starting with younger kids means you can really go up till it challenges them and then slow down. That’s been an issue for kids on the cut off year that finish early and can’t go up a level. Seems perfect for you in that way! Also, way to be receptive to what your kindergartener needs and be willing to switch your curriculum to fit. It’s not easy using two diff curriculums but we do and it’s doable!

We have been doing Singapore primary 2022 1a and 1b this year. It makes sense to me, but it stresses my kid out. The home instructions guide is definitely an overload of information. I feel like I have to spend a lot of time preparing for each lesson just trying to figure out how to teach new concepts. I plan to switch to math with confidence next year.

If math is a stressful thing, I think you’ll like the switch. Don’t be surprised if getting the grade level 2 for MWC seems easy at first. But it really picks up! It’s got a diff scope and sequence, and I think Singapore tends to be about half year ahead of most other curriculums. You’ll also really benefit from putting together a math box with all the pieces since MWC pulls a lot of random stuff out during the “warm up”.

I watched several other homeschooling moms for Singapore 2022 and several suggested getting the School teacher instruction book instead of the homeschooling one, as it’s easier to follow. Math comes naturally to me, so I didn’t even purchase neither of the teacher/homeschool instructor books. But I did look into those book and I agree! It’s a lot to look through! There is a guy who does teach each lesson of Singapore 2022 for free on KZfaq! I figured if I’m struggling to figure something out on a lesson, my son and I can easily watch his video and he can guide us through.

Great comparison! We have a similar story… started with SM Dimensions but it was too confusing at the beginning for my K and too much repetition/busy work for my eldest so we switched to MWC K (now on 2) and we looooove it! My grade 3 switched from Dimensions to Math Mammoth and he thrives with that. For MWC I made a math binder with the most used materials, and made copies of all the game boards (instructions on the back). I also buy only the workbook and put the teacher guide on my Kobo e-reader. Works amazingly! ✨ I do have curriculum FOMO with SM tho 😅

Glad y’all are liking it then! I’ve heard really good things about math mammoth. If we ever needed to switch my oldest I’d look into that. Great idea with the binder for game copies…hoping Kate will make some changes and do that for us down the road as an add on or something so we don’t have to 😀. A lot of people suggest she does that in her Facebook group!

I'm looking at starting Primary Math 2022 for my second grader your videos have been great so thank you. I was wondering what manipulatives you would recommend. There seem to be so many and I'd just rather buy the minimum needed to do program.

I don’t have the list in front of me and forget exactly what we used for 2nd grade. But I know we used a place value mat with the base 10 blocks, a printable movable clock for each year when we cover time (I have a cheap one in my Etsy shop), ruler, printable 10 frame, 10 sided dice and regular 6 sided, real coins and play paper money. I never used a balance or scale…we just used the photos for that. The main thing I had to buy was the base 10 set for place value and I’d 100% not skip buying that. Other stuff you could get as you need it later.

Are you continuing to buy the home instructor guide? Or do you find it doesn’t add much to your lesson? You could buy some of the higher level right start game kits to add in. A lot of the more popular games are blogged on their website, so you don’t even necessarily need the game direction book.

Wow thanks for the info on right start. Yes, I have continued buying the level 3 and now level 4 home instructors guides, but mainly because as math gets harder I’m afraid I’ll need them. We are now about to start level 3b. I’d love to hear from moms who use the online portions we don’t use. It just seems like so much to keep track of and they only give you one year free when you buy a new home instructors guide (not helpful for moms with multiple kids that would have to rebuy access).

Are you still loving MWC for your younger kids? We used MWC for Kindergarten last year. My daughter and I both loved it and we had a lot of fun with math. I keep wondering if MWC will be "enough" though (esp as she gets order) and will it give a deep enough conceptual understanding? So I've been looking into Singapore. Do you feel like your younger kids are developing the same level of number sense and understanding as your oldest? On the flip side, do you feel like your younger kids have more confidence and/or enjoy math more than your oldest? Im also considering just sticking with MWC since its working well and then maybe adding in some of the extras from Singapore like Mastery and Beyond or the Challenging Words Problems if/when we need them (I think those are the correct names...if not, something like that lol). Thanks so much! I appreciate your input and advice!

We are still using and loving Math With Confidence with my younger 2 kids. One child will start MWC4 in the fall. I've got a MWC playlist with updated reviews using it here: kzfaq.info/sun/PLMuWXzAg6JiJXoMydBnzx6E9V79jadEjj . MWC has provided a solid mental math base and plenty of practice with each concept. It picks up a bit in 3rd grade too. MWC is slower and less challenging than Singapore but that's ok for me. It's also super conceptual and hands on like Singapore, but much easier to implement for a non mathy mom and there are more simple games. We're actually switching my oldest from Singapore to Math Mammoth for his 5th grade year because Singapore Primary 2022 became a daily fight. I struggled to use the Home Instructor's Guide, and it wasn't set up well for him to be more independent which he wanted. Hope that helps!

I'm not a mathy mom either and MWC has been so easy for me to teach and easy for my daughter to learn. I think I just let that ease make me feel like it wasn't enough. I have tried PM US edition, dimensions, PM standards and PM 2022. PM 2022 was my least favorite. The only good thing it had going for it was that it combined the guide with the textbook.

I’m still on the fence about whether i should switch to MWC for my second grader. We finished primary math 2a and I’m actually looking for something less parent intensive. Your videos are always soo helpful

The teacher's guide for Singapore math has pictures of the corresponding lesson. It's more money but more transparent to teach, obviously, as a teacher would. ❤

That seems like it might be worth the money to have those pages pictured! I wonder if there’s a few example pages of it on their website or a flip through already on KZfaq I could see. I have the HIG up through 4B so far but do find them really hard to use, especially if I need more help teaching a concept. We have found Math With Purpose video library helpful for that. Thankful for so many math resources available now days!

We just got math with confidence and I was between that and Singapore. We flew through pre school math at home. He’ll be 4 1/2 by the time we start. He wants to start now but I’m not ready 😂.

I hope you both like it! How was Preschool Math At Home? We’ve never used that…we’ve only used Busy Toddler’s Playing Preschool which already has math concepts included. And I’m like you with the 4.5 year old thing…you’ll have to wait a lil longer kiddo till moms ready to start 🤪

@@LizBlueandHazel preschool math at home was great! It was engaging and really easy to follow. My son didn’t even know it was “school” Right now we are focusing on reading so that’s why I’m waiting to start math with confidence. I’m hoping he will complete teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons in the next 2 months. We will see though. I just need to be mentally there to start haha!

If ur on grade 3 math with confidence could you move on to Singapore 4a or would you have to do 3a or 3b

If you finish MWC 3 (my daughter is using that level so I’m familiar with it now) I’d back up at least to level 3 a or b for Singapore Primary 2022. Check the scope and sequence of both before buying to see what’s covered. Some of it will be easy to transfer (personally I think MWC 3 is doing a much better job of helping to memorize times tables than Singapore math). Other things will be harder to swap over later, like word problems and bar models. I’d spend some time if you switch learning bar models on KZfaq or from Jessica Kaminski’s paid videos over at Math With Purpose. I’ve been using her videos to help me teach my son who’s now in 4a of Primary 2022 and she’s a great teacher! I don’t find the Singapore Math Home Instructors Guide helpful enough to teach my son the word problems if I don’t know what to do. Hope that helps.

Is the Mastery and Beyond necessary?

The program includes this as a necessary component. In my experience I’d say we use some of it, and don’t others (maybe around half of the M&B lessons, so it’s worth it to me to keep buying). There have been units we’ve not grasped well and just really needed some extra practice reviewing the last few lessons… and Mastery and Beyond does that. When I see my son gets what’s in the review pages, then we may skip the Mastery and Beyond and just move to the next regular lesson. Since we don’t do any of the extension or reteach online, or additional practice books, M&B seems helpful to me without being too much.

When my oldest was in kinder, we didn’t know about these yet and did the old version of good and the beautiful level k. I switched for his first grade year to Masterbooks level 2, and at the end of first grade switched him to Singapore math primary is edition 1A (so basically started at the beginning so we would learn the methods). When Singapore primary 2022 was released I switched him to that and found it much easier for me to follow. For all my younger kids, they are using math with confidence.

I hate having to supplement i did the good and the beautiful and had to supplement soo much my child also finished it in half the year so i was left having to buy another curriculum apart from supplementing with downloaded free worksheets i switched to singapore to challenge her and math u see . Now she has 2 curriculum one to master concepts and one to challenge her.

Hope that you find what works well for her! Not sure of her age, but we have really enjoyed Math With Confidence, which is coming out with grade 4 this June. It masters the math facts for kids in such a fun, game filled way. I’m not sure any math program will have 100% what we want or like, but the ones you mentioned are solid programs.

@LizBlueandHazel thanks i will definitely look into math with confidence too. Yes its hard to find curriculum that dosent need supplementing, but some are just less than others. My daughter is 7 we finished tg&tb up to math 2 and this january i noticed we would finish early so i got math u see gamma but also noticed she was flying thru it and i needed more worksheets so i decided to get singapore because it had more subjects to teach other than multiplication. She had her skip counting mastered by at 5 so i had a feeling she would finish multiplication a bit quicker.. thanks for the recommendation. I still think i will use tg&tb for my 2 younger kids because they love the games. So no money waisted i guess.
