Contemporary artist Dyn has always been fascinated by Singapore's Parkview Square, the so-called 'Gotham City' building, with its larger-than-life Art Deco statues. He wonders how such an imposing structure came to be, just one street away from the historic district of Kampong Gelam.
Curiously, nobody seems to know, and this mystery drives Dyn to delve into the past to discover the forgotten history of the area. In his search, he uncovers a lost kampong with a vibrant community and a 100-year old Javanese mosque that stood as its landmark.

Masjid Ma'arof . . . I used to pray Friday prayers in late 60s to the 80s there . Among the imams were the late Ustad Taha As'Suhaimi and his younger brother Ustad Kamil Suhaimi. The Friday sermon was conducted in Malay/English. Those were the days . . sad😥 . . .

It's strange that this mosque was only demolished in 1996, but there remains very few photographs of it. Whereas you can easily find images of structures that predates 1996 on the internet!

Having lived in Beach Road all my life, I recall my dad bringing me to this very same mosque back in 1989 or 1990 wen I was 3-4 years old. Nostalgic indeed

Malay mosque dont have dome, but 'Tajug' or pyramid shape roof , with 2 or 3 layer up to 5 layer of tier roof. dome and 2 minaret are not native architecture in Malay archipelago/sundaland or Indonesia-Malaysia. Masjid Agung Demak, Masjid Agung Banten in Indonesia and Masjid Kg Laut Kelantan and Masjid Tengkera is the example of Malay archipelago/Nusantara architecture mosque, different from Middle-Eastern Arab-Persian/Iran-Turkish, Morocco and India-Pakistani architecture mosque, 2 type style malay building, 1 is commoner, it common kampung wooden house with thatched roof made from Palm like kabung, nipah, coconut, or paddy straw, some commoner have money also can afford roof tiles, and other is royal and noble style or highest form, with yellow/golden color at craving or motif, bigger, complex decoration and ornament, with roof tiles, this common around southeast asian from Burma, Loas, Cambodia, Thailand to Indonesia. Dr Imran Tajudeen is the best Malay architecture historian, a lot malay dont care about Malay architecture anymore, unlike Minangkabau, Javanese, Thai, Cambodian, Burmese know about their architecture and the best Chinese, Bhutanese-Tibetian, Japanese and Korean. The URA did not exactly explain the reasons for not conserving Kampung Masjid Bahru, it seems. It appears to be done in haste in line with the notion of progress and development. Whereas you can fine thousands of shophouses scattered around the whole area. Saying that there was already a Masjid Sultan nearby to qualify Masjid Kampung Bahru's demolition is weak. There has to be structural/communal issues at play. Very sad that such heritage become lost so easily in this country.

And to build that monstrosity of a tower that has no place in the area - whether in terms of looks or topography or architectural consistency - over the exact site of a 100 year old mosque that, until its demolition, continued to serve the community is a slap in the face of Singapore's history and cultural heritage of the area.

Frankly they should have take into account Masjid Kg Bahru. The Barbican Estate is an example how they preserved their church inside the Estate. Such a shame to demolish the old Mosque only to put up a generic building.

Bodo. Banyak lukisan pada zaman keemasan Islam. Banyak kartunis kat Malaysia kalau kau jumpa diorg depan2 jauh lebih islamik drp kau yg bebal dan jumud ni. Allahyarham Rejabhad, Datuk Lat, Ujang, imuda dll diorg ni jauh lebih alim walaupun diorg pelukis.
