This video is all about Singapore - the tiny city state in Southeast Asia that has transformed itself into one of the world's wealthiest countries (per capita).
It also has a fascinating history as a British colony, which has greatly influenced present-day Singapore, including its racial demographics. Singapore is a diverse country that prides itself on harmony between its different ethnic groups. It's now also an international business hub which attracts expats from around the world.

One thing I learned from watching this video was that the Singapore government tracks the ethnicity of its people. From my only visit to the town/country many years ago, I can remember seeing a lot of mixed-race people (most of them really beautiful), mainly Chinese-Malay (with perhaps some European mixed in) and not so much Indian-other. My conclusion is that interracial families must be more prevalent than the figures presented in the video suggest and that mixed-race people get categorized as one or the other.
@GEOfocusChannel
@GEOfocusChannel Жыл бұрын
That’s a good point, and something racial statistics don’t seem to account for. From what I understand, parents of mixed race children can choose which race to register their child as, and in recent years they added the option of a hyphenated biracial registration (like “Malay-Chinese”), but even in that case, the first of the two races will be used for things like housing quotas and assigning a “mother tongue” to be studied at school. So, even if they opt for a hyphenated biracial registration, it seems they’re considered one race for official purposes. I believe they can change their registration, so someone could be “Chinese-Malay” in order to study Mandarin at school, then reverse it to “Malay-Chinese” if helped them get a housing unit. I don’t know how often people do that, though.

Yup Singaporean here. I am part of the younger generation, and let's not even talk about marriages and kids; since many younger Singaporeans are not giving a damn about our race/ethnicities in general unlike the older ones, you can very easily find Singaporeans of Chinese/Malay/Indian/Eurasian/Other ethnicities all dating each other across different races. It's no longer a taboo, like in the older days.

@@GEOfocusChannel sorry if some people are rude to you over this but food is a touchy issue between Singapore and Malaysia. We have many food wars. Lol. Same thing different names. Like sushi in Japan and gimbap in korea. Prata/Canai originated from India, they call it "paratha". Canai is a malay word meaning "knead". So Malaysia tweaked the name with a Malay version while Singapore kept to the original Indian word with a different spelling. However prata/canai uses a different flour from paratha so technically its a new dish, created by Indian migrants to the region. You cannot find canai/prata in India. "Roti" means bread which I believe is Indian origin but is also the word for bread in Malay.

As a Singaporean, it would be cliche to talk about the same thing as anyone else, but I am more appreciative of our government being more clear headed when solving problems Other things would be - Cheap, affordable and extremely delicious cuisine - you can drink straight from the tap - electronics in Singapore are cheaper than in neighbouring countries (due to strong currency) - efficient public sector (little to no corruption and red tapes) - efficient public transport - super clean air - less censorship in entertainment - High quality housing - Cheap household items - low crime rates (you can literally leave your wallet on a public table and it won't be stolen) - Best financial service in the world - Extremely strong purchasing power - Public areas are clean - pedestrian friendly road system Etc

- There is red tape, we inherited our bureaucracy from the British, but it’s worse for domestic issues and most people don’t face it - There’s heavy censorship. I’m not sure why you think there isn’t much of it. We have virtually no newspaper freedoms, but since you mentioned entertainment, even then we tend to censor any LGBT content. - The price of electronics is generally rising though! The rest is true though LOL

As a Singaporean, what intrigues me most is that I live on an island-city-state that 57 years ago was kicked out of the Federation of Malaya to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous misfortune in order to teach our "intractable" Prime Minister a lesson in humility (and the supremacy of the Malays in the Federation). And after a few years wandering in the wilderness of independence as a small, resource-poor, independent nation, and facing abject poverty, Singapore would be forced to crawl back to the Federation, hat in hand, and BEG to be re-admitted into the Federation... on the Federation terms (which will probably include a life time ban on Lee Kuan Yew from the post of Prime Minister.) Instead, Singapore prospered. And surpassed Malaysia. HOW? @4:50 the video tries to offer a short list of some of the more important "factors" for Singapore's success. And I agree all those contribute to Singapore's success. But behind those factors were the pre-cursors of those factors. I am still intrigue by how such a small, insignificant island can punch above its weight. One answer was that we chose good leaders, like Lee Kuan Yew. I think that gets it backwards. When Singapore was ejected from the Federation, Lee could have thrown his hands up in the air, and left. He was a trained lawyer, and he could have plied his trade anywhere in the British Empire (even as it was diminishing). And prospered. Instead he chose to dig in and fight and work for Singapore. Why? Who knows? Anyway, someone asked Tommy Koh, our Ambassador-at-large (IIRC), what was the secret of Singapore's Success. He asked 50 thought leaders. Those 50 wrote essays. Tommy Koh collected, edited, and compiled them into a book.

I think that not really spoken about, or misunderstood is that Singapore actually has a very good social security net for the poor. The fact is that you'll never go hungry or be shelter-less in Singapore, and you'll never have hospitals (public) ones turning you away. The poor are actually very well supported. Most of the time, it's the mid - lower income families that feels more of a squeeze.

If often amuses me that people will cite physical size as a reason for the supposed ease of governance. If that is the case, smaller countries in the world should all be better governed, richer and more powerful than larger countries? Does not seem to reflect reality. Singapore in the 1960s, despite its small physical size, was a disjointed and segregated migrant society of significant population size, with the majority having a zero sense of belonging (almost all of whom were planning to return after striking it rich). The vast majority were poorly educated, yet people were the only resource Singapore had, with no raw materials of significance, insufficient water or agricultural produce. It was a colony racked by crime, corruption, strikes and communal riots, along with the threat of communists who conducted terror activities in Singapore. In addition, there was no military, and was sandwiched between two huge hostile neighbours who offered minimal economic support. I am sure you can do a better job turning such a country around within 10 years, as LKY did.

I have always been curious about Singapore's pseudo-democracy. I watched analyses here on KZfaq and I've read several articles. It seems that Singapore is sort of a dictatorship that tries to woo public consent. On the upside they have great stability and policy consistency which is something investors adore. On the downside personal freedom and rights are very limited. Like in many Far Eastern societies, the individual is entirely subordinate to the well-being of the community. That can be very stifling and it has been found to stifle innovation, even the innovation that could be useful to the economy. The government also has a habit of making some people "disappear". It is certainly a better country than PRChina or Russia and it is economically far more successful. It is probably even better than South Korea which is a full democracy but so conservative that it can feel like an authoritarian regime at times. That said, if I were to choose to live in the Far East, I would probably choose Taiwan and not just because it recognises LGBT+ rights.

Just to clarify for anyone reading the comments. Singapore holds free elections and questioning the integrity of the electoral process itself is a huge deal. Notice I said free, not fair. It won't ever be truly fair, not until a single political party stops mobilising the entire government machinery and resources to its own campaign advantage. That being said, the PAP's share of votes has been declining over the years and the main opposition Worker's Party has been making gains occasionally. There's also no people "disappearing", not in recent times. I could only think of Operation Coldstore or Operation Spectrum in the 60s and 80s respectively, that rounded up alleged "Marxist" conspirators. Even then I think people were aware of their fates either in or outside Singapore, they definitely didn't just vanish.

Nitpick. At 6:03 Singapore Botanical Gardens. It's the "Singapore BOTANIC Gardens". At 8:31, "Roti Canai" is what Malaysians call it. We (Singaporeans) call it "Roti Prata"! (And we are very miffed that some stupid website - Taste Atlas, I think - declared Roti Canai the best bread, and Roti Prata was 12th or something. When the two are practically the same!) Okay. To be fair, I get the name of the Botanic Gardens wrong too! After all, it is "The Singapore Zoological Gardens" not the "Zoologic Gardens". But the Roti Canai thing.... But seriously, I have watched quite a few videos on Singapore, made by non-Singaporeans, and I am often irked by mispronunciation of local names or words. I realised I was not irked by this video. "Temasek", "Bukit Timah", "Srivijaya", "Majapahit", were all correctly pronounced (or rather, correct IMHO). Since I am nitpicking, I should also note the good stuff. Another video I watched confused the position of UMNO (Malay Malaysia), and PAP (Malaysian Malaysia). This video got it right. At 10:10 comes the usual political criticism of Singapore. It's too complicated to go into details, so let's take the implied criticism of nepotism from 10:18 - That Singapore has had only 3 prime ministers since 1965 (actually since 1959. Lee Kuan Yew was Prime Minister of a self-governing Singapore while still a British Colony.) So... what's the issue? Let's take Malaysia. They have had 10 Prime Ministers (9 distinct ones, with an "encore" performance by the 4th one as the 7th.) In the almost 60 years from 1965 til today, how has Malaysia progressed? In 1965, their GDP per capita was US$325. By 2023, after 10 PMs, it is approximately, US$12,000. Pretty good, eh? Singapore's Per Capita GDP in 1965 was US$517. Today, after just 3 PMs, it is over $82,000. Surpassing even the US ($76,000). So.... the takeaway from this is??? Excessive prime ministers retards economic growth? 🙂 No. My point is that Singapore's political leaders have delivered. And delivered. And delivered. Every time. And every election, the voters endorse them by voting them back into power. And so, over nearly 60 years, the PAP has delivered, and the people have voted them back into power. But "Democracy" somehow needs to cast aspersions, or make innuendoes about unbroken one-party rule, and hints about nepotism. But President George H. W. Bush and his son President George W. Bush...? But let me answer the question you posed at the end, before I forget. How do I feel about life in Singapore? I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a country run by a competent pragmatic govt. I am glad Singapore is a safe place (low crime). That buses and trains run on time. That things here just works. That people here have a good chance to reach their full potential, and their full life. The same old unthinking criticisms of Singapore gets tired very fast. In 2015, just after the passing of Lee Kuan Yew, the criticisms were revived. This rant/diatribe/retort was one result: singapore2b.blogspot.com/2015/04/the-same-old-criticisms-of-singapore.html It is meant for Singaporeans, so do not feel like you need to read it all. Or at all. But let me again say that I enjoyed the video. It is one of the better ones. You did your research and your "homework" (pronunciation). Yeah, I had some issues (above), but it does not detract from your good work. Thank you.

Discrimination by any majority group over a minority group - racial or otherwise - can be observed in any human society, but that is not an excuse. Singapore can definitely do better. That being said in present day Singapore you will notice very little to none hate, violence or discrimination against any other races out in the open, unlike some other countries. That is because the rule of law is strong and people living in an extremely crammed city state are accustomed to being tolerant of each other, not that they are saints. Regarding socioeconomic opportunities for minorities, in fact Indians (one of the smallest group in Singapore) possess higher education and median income even above the Chinese majority, if memory serves me right. So go figure on that. Also try asking some born and raised Singaporean Malays if they think they would actually be better off living in Malaysia where they can be part of the majority and receive preferential treatment under the Bumiputera policy. I believe some of their answers might surprise you.

I have conflicted views on Singapore. Pros: it is a well developed country. Nice climate etc. Cons: it is a colonized island. First by British and then Chinese. Ethnic Malays are only a tiny portion of demographics and being discriminated in their own homeland especially in jobs due to language requirements such as Chinese knowledge. I wonder if Vancouver is on the path to be a new Singapore. Also history proved that Malay federation was wise to kick Singapore out of union. Otherwise they would likely have lost the entire Malaysia to Chinese.

Vancouver has a large population of Chinese background, but for anyone of Chinese background born in Canada, English becomes the language they’re most comfortable with, and most 2nd generation Chinese speak English with each other. According to the PAP website, the RED flash represents action, WHITE signifies purity and integrity, and the BLUE circle stands for unity of all races. But I have always believed that the red flash could possibly be a graphic image of a lightning strike. In Malay, the People’s Action Party is known as Parti Tindakan Rakyat. The initials PTR, especially when written in the old Jawi (Arabic) script, could be read as PETIR. Petir is the Malay word for lightning, hence the red lightning strike in the party’s logo. In fact, the PAP has its own publication called PETIR. It used to be available only in print but now has an online version too.

Quah. • The use of English is also a direct result of Lee Kuan Yew’s assessment that a populace proficient in English would make it highly competitive, which turned out to be correct. • The implementation of racial quotas in housing is a foundational part of promoting multi-ethnic “harmony” in Singapore, the theory being that someone is far less likely to riot against someone else of a different race, if that person is his or her neighbor and, possibly, friend. • The “freest economy” is more of a right-wing canard than anything else. In fact, as economist Ha-Joon Chang likes to say, “Singapore combines the features of extreme capitalism and extreme socialism” and points to “90 per cent of the land is owned by the government, 85 per cent of housing is provided by government owned housing corporation, and a staggering 22 per cent of GDP is produced by state-owned enterprise,” as part of the heterodox nature of Singapore’s economy. • The dominance of the People’s Action Party, which remains genuinely popular, is aided by some structural advantages such as the requirement to put together “teams” (group representation constituencies or GRCs) to be elected into Parliament (the opposition parties have a harder time putting together qualifying teams), high deposits to run as candidates, and a very short election period (as short as nine days). I think adding details such as these, which would _not_ have added considerably to the length of the video, would have given a more nuanced view of Singapore. (Note: I’m no expert on Singapore and I’m not even Singaporean, just someone from the US).

Those are all interesting points. You might think I'm more deeply knowledgeable than I am, though. That tends to happen a lot because I'm on the screen and it sounds like I'm lecturing, but I'm really just making content about things that interest me, and a lot of the things I talk about in videos are things I learn while making the video. I've always thought that's fine, because I see the videos as simple overviews of a topic, where there isn't a lot of room for depth (and there really isn't if you want to keep the length to around 10 minutes). But in the comments there is lots of room for depth because every thread can be its own detailed discussion inspired by something simple in the video. For most topics I'm guessing I know more than half the audience does, but know less than the other half does. That's partly a result of taking such a broad approach.

@@GEOfocusChannel "You might think I'm more deeply knowledgeable than I am, though." No, I didn’t think that-it’s just that the first three, mentioned in the video, didn’t just "happen"-they're a direct result of deliberate, well-thought-out government policy. The next one (about the "freest economy") is really too simplistic-at the very least, even not agreeing with Ha-joon Chang, Hong Kong’s economy is probably “freer.” And I think just mentioning the PAP's dominance without saying something _about_ that-either its genuine popularity or its advantages, which the opposition criticizes, or both-raises more questions than it answers. The video was interesting but it just felt a bit incomplete to me without just _a little_ more additional detail.

Yes and the people of Singapore misbehave badly whenever they are out of the Singapore. You can find the news of Singaporeans in Malaysia behaving out of line. They are likely feeling confined in the country with strict regulations and laws and thus going out misbehaving in other country.

Well balanaced narrative.. I did not know about segregation in housing according to nationality! Once the world liberalises, these enclaves of free markets which survive only because of restrictions in other neighbourinfg economies will lose their power. that is my hope.

That is not a segregation but racial distribution according to the population percentage. That is a very good policy in order to maintain their interracial harmony. Kids, regardless of ethnicity, grow together and become friends, creating harmony among different etnic groups. 1 year before Singapore was kicked out of Malaysia, they had a bad race riots there. And so they had imbibed in their constitution the need to have interracial harmony. Singapore is a country worthy of emulation!
