What on Earth happened to the once mighty Majapahit (Majahapit?) Empire and the other Indianized Hindu kingdoms of Southeast Asia? As strange as it seems today, only a millennia ago the bulk of Southeast Asia actually fell under the domain of Hinduism, giving rise to many unique fusions of culture and kingdoms such as the Champa, Khmer, Srivijaya and others, but where did they all go?
Today we will discuss all these things as well as the modern successors of these ancient civilizations. Be sure to let me know your thoughts on the Majapahit, Champa and their modern descendants as well as the most interesting kingdom. Be sure to watch until the end for a sneak peak at my newest project. Thanks for watching!

Majapahit - the most powerful empire of South East asia which was also the golden era for the region followed by Angkor. Indian influence was very strong in the entire region for almost two thousand years until Islam entered in 15th century via arab trade and then christianity via european colonization. The language scripts in most SE countries mirror the languages in India. Also, Afghanistan was never a separate country historically - It was part of Indian Mauryan empire and had extensive Hindu and Buddhist past until Islamic invasion from Persia and Turks. What is shocking about countries like Indonesia and Malaysia is they had such a great, rich religious and cultural past and their ancestors constructed world renowned UNESCO listed monuments such as Borobudur, Prambhanan which are currently earning a lot of tourist income for Indonesia yet they converted to a totally alien religion to the region like Islam and then you have Philippines converting to Catholicism. This happened only a few hundred years ago. The spanish/Portuguese were quite ruthless when it comes to religious conversions and they did exactly the same in South and Latin america.

When the Portuguese entered Sumatera and Malaka (now Malaysia) ,they insisted with threat that the locals should convert to Catholic .......this provoked anger to the locals ,and a Jihad war was established ......the Portuguese lose ,and returned home with a big loss ........ with that experience ,the Dutch entered the region ,on a trading basis ,and slowly occupying regions ,first by taking permission to build a storage house in Sunda Kelapa (now part of Jakarta) ,then gradually increasing their territory .......

Majapahit was not the most powerful empire in South East Asia and merely as it was not an empire but a city-state kingdom that demands only tributes from nearby regions but never conquered fully far flung lands. The only true Empire in South East Asia history was the Khmer Empire as it built a very centralized Empire through building road systems that conquered and controlled large parts of mainland South East Asia

lol this is such an ethnocentric view on south east asia. Invasion of Islam? LMAO, name me one Islamic country that led this invasion I will wait. The reason why this region survived from the spanish and portugese conversions was because they had strong belief on Islam and had very strong leaders albeit their defeat they still realiated like the Achehnese vs Dutch revolts or the Johor-Malacca retaliations against the portugese. Unfortunately the rest weren't so lucky like the Luzons and the americas. The brunei sultanate single handedly whooped the Conquistadors. If they weren't there Borneo would become some spanish colony by the 16th century

Should've probably explored modern Javanese culture which still has massive influences from Hinduism Also Balinese culture is heavily dependent on Old Javanese and even the official motto of Indonesia is taken from a Majapahit document preserved by the Balinese. In terms of culture probably Javanese and Balinese are more similar than Javanese and Malays. It's unthinkable I would think for Balinese to want independence. The first Indonesian president also iirc has Balinese blood. Great vid tho, very rare to find topics about the history of this region (while everyone seems to want to go to Bali, not many asks how that mesmerizing culture evolved)

As for this video, what happened with Majapahit? Just wiki, its there. Interesting though.

The Kingdom of Champa was Hindu in most of its history. By the time Vietnamese invaded Champa, the Cham people already in the process of converting to Islam due to contacts with Maritime Southeast Asia. That explains why they are majority Muslim today. There is even a Muslim Khmer prince aided by Cham and Malay mercenaries try to usurp the Khmer throne, but does not succeed.
@supremekhmer6596
@supremekhmer6596 6 жыл бұрын
The Khmer Muslim Prince did succeed and ruled the Khmer Kingdom and bought it great wealth. His name was Ibrahim and he defeated the Dutch East India Company who try to takeover Cambodia in the 17th century A.D. This was one of the most important event between a European power and the Khmer during that time. You will hear more about him when more research is done about the Post-Angkor period which is a very fascinating era of Khmer history that was largely forgotten. Somehow after the fall of the Khmer Empire in the 15th century A.D. there was this shift in maritime trading that bought the West and East together.

I wish for a cultural & artistic revival of pre colonial south east Asian history, especially in mine (The Philippines). For too long we have neglected our ancestors proud heritage because they were not European or Christian like the Spaniards or Americans, it is disgraceful to think in that way, we identity first as ASIANS, not Hispanic, not American or European. We need to embrace our Animistic, Hindu, Buddhist and Muslim Heritage, it is very upsetting for me to know that the only few people in the Philippines who embrace their heritage before colonialism, are the Aeta, Highland Tribes, Lumads and Moros among others, because the Catholic church in our country isn't a *peaceful or humanitarian institution*. They had some very liberal leaders, but so what? Question about their stance on Contraception and Abortion to a country over 100 million people and poverty reaching to about a 1/5th or 1/4 of the population. Like the translation movement during the golden age of Islam, where they translated ancient Greek texts ranging from science, literature to philosophy and even developing their own. We should follow the same path, revive our ancient script, bond with our fellow Asians and reach beyong the dreams of economic prosperity as it is a must, as it was for Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, South Korea & China. Whether based on their system of authoritarian capitalism or Scandinavia's social democracy. We must succeed✊

Great video Masaman, though I would also like to add some other interesting Hindu communities. Theres the Tamils in the city of Medan, North Sumatra. The Dutch brought them here as laborers and their brand of Hinduism is much closer to the one practiced in South Asian than in Bali. There's also the Karahingan people in Central Borneo who are registered as Hindus, but in actuality theym're religion is more animists than actual Hindus. That's because at one point, the government declared that anyone who wasn't a muslim or a christian are automatically Hindus because of their animist practices. Great video nevertheless :) I look forward to more videos on Maritime Southeast Asia, the demographics of this region is very interesting, and myself as an Indonesian have only just scratched the surface.

Hinduism in Java is distinctively different from India. According to Babad Tanah Jawi story, Sanghyang Tunggal (descendant of Nabi Syits (Sanghyang Adhama/Adam's son) and Dewi Mulat (Ajajil/Azazil's daughter)) have three children. They are Sanghyang Ismaya/Semar, Sanghyang Mahapunggung/Togog, and Sanghyang Manikmaya/Siwa/Shiva/Batara Guru. And later, Batara Guru with Dewi Uma (before becoming Dewi Durga) have five children, they are Batara Sambu (raksasa/asura's ancestor), Batara Brahma, Batara Indra, Batara Bayu, and the last is Batara Wisnu. We are not believe Trimurti. We respect them but not worship them. Although Indonesia is majority moslem, we all know about Mahabrata, Baratayuda, and Ramayana story. There is many sansekerta/sanskrit name such as Gatot from Gatotkaca (Bima's child with Arimbi/Hidimbi). But, Ramayana story is less influencing because of kasta problem. According to Sipatahunan story, Rahwana/Ravan is a good people until get possessed by Sanghyang Rancasan/older brother of Shiva from another mother.
