No that won't need adjusting . Thats the feed drop bar . Just oil a'll the joints and where it goes in to the feed dog assembly .

I know this started off as a way to sell my reconditioned machines buy demonstrating them and providing a link to my actual ad in eBay and Craigslist . I haven't been selling alot lately but people are asking questions about theirmachines . Which is cool too . Happy to help as much as I can without hands on .

Maybe the feed dogs need to be raised ? Or foot tension increased . Sorry , I don't understand the last part of your question .

I actually started to answer this a couple days ago . In fact had about 20 minutes worth of explanation ready to send and lost it all . Accidentally closed before saving or sending . Sounds like you have a severe timing issue . Nothing that can't be adjusted though . I will assume it was working fine then happened all at once ? Or was it gradually ? Sounds like you may have tried to sew something to thick and the needle contacted the needle plate , breaking the needle causing the machine to jump time . Lets check all the easy simple things first to rule them out . Make sure the needle is not bent . Then that its seated all the way up to it's stop in the needle bar . Once you've checked those 2 things the needle is installed with the flat side/ cutaway side facing in the correct direction . All machines are different so this is crucial . I believe on that machine ( I sold mine ) the flat side should be facing towards your right side . Go ahead and thread the machine and try and pickup the bottom thread while holding the end of the top thread after it passes through the needle with your left hand for some tension . Roll the machine over slowly by hand one complete revolution starting with the needle bar and take up arm all the way up one complete resolution all the way back to the top again. . If this doesn't pickup the thread then you have a timing issue . By timing I mean the needle position as it relates to the race / hook underneath . Theres a timing where the needle passes down as far as it travels then starts back up just as the race virtually picks the thread off the needle at precisely the correct time as it's retracting back up . Most needles have a relief area ( slight cutaway near the eye ) same side as the flat side of the needle . So timing is critical as well as the clearance involved . Race should pass VERY close to needle but actually not touch it . You want to leave some room for some possible needle deflection as it passes through thicker materials . If theres not enough sometimes it will hit the race/hook underneath bending / breaking the needle and possibly causing other damage as well . ( Like causing it to jump time or breaking gears inside ) . This clearance between race and needle is roughly .002 - .003 (or two to three thousandths of an inch) . Try and eyeball it . Better to remove the needle plate and Bobbincase while checking this clearance . Barely see any light between needle and hook/race . Back to timing the point of the hook should be just pass the needle soon after it starts its upward motion . If it's to late it'll not pick the thread off correctly . If its too late it'll also miss the thread . I'm gonna send this so you can check those things first . I hope this helps . John

Hello I have a Singer 177c Fashion Mate w table trying to fix it seems to be locked up, what can I do?

The only problem was the needle was not facing the right direction. When I read this, I went and looked and sure enough! The needle was out of wack. Thanks!

My mom and dad bought me my Fashion Mate 237 for my high school graduation in 1971. It still sews like a dream. Thank you for your video. I have not sewn on it in several years and forgot which way my needle went in. Thanks to you I can now sew on it again.

Theres a set drew under the left cover plate . Set way inside . Needs a narrow straight slot screwdriver to loosen . You'll have to reassemble it in the reverse order of taking it apart . Then getting the spring pressure correct will be tricky . Its pretty involved . I don't think I can explain it very well here . I may need to make a video later on it . Unless someone else already has .

Gear failure is rare on that machine . Certainly sounds like it's out of time if its breaking needles . Not enough time now to explain everything . Can I get back to you ? Thanks John

@@johnmeredithstudios8557 Most certainly… but I prayed, no I’m not a religious nut lolololol …. Just serve the one and only true God who can do anything, and only thing happened was just a little longer stitch here and there and I don’t think many of them at that.. there has been tension problems prior… hopefully it will settle down… after using it for yrs like 52 plus, was told needle size mattered like with kind of material…. . Sooo one sewing session at a time… also, was gifted a Dressmaker … school use machine… are you familiar with these?… works as in needle going up and down, but no book, etc… and little cover over bobbin, one hinge broken, glued it but now crookedy and won’t stay close… machine seems too nice to discard or throw away … it’s a heavy one…. and thank you so much for replying… not everyone does.. have a great day‼️👍🏻

That's actually a very nice simple machine when it's set up right . If you haven't already , remove the 2 screws that hold the needle plate and remove any jammed thread underneath . Then try again . Top tension should stay around # 3 . I will have tips about setting up timing eventually . As long as its not skipping stitches on zig zag setting or snapping/cutting thread the timing should be close . Hope this helps .

@@johnmeredithstudios8557 I figured it is simple, that's why I grabbed it. I'm apparently the simple one in this equation though xD As soon as I read your reply, I opened it up. Unfortunately I don't see any jammed thread ( I may have inadvertently cleared the jam soon after it happened when I ripped the thread out - there were 4 threads ) --- I looked into timing the machine & as it sits, it LOOKS like it's timed correctly. It actually grabs the first stitch most of the time, but watching the bobbin, the second stitch doesn't go all the way around. The hook grabs it, it goes about 48% of the way around, then it fails :(

@@johnmeredithstudios8557 Really ? NICE ! I still have my first Beetle ! It's nothing special, but it's my first...so I made the effort to keep it. Just sold a '61 convertible. That one was more rust than car when I bought it. About to trade my daily driver for a '64 sedan. Can't get enough of those Beetles !

I have before they are pretty straightforward . I don't see alot of them .
