Love this new series! I have a few 99s. In bentwood cases I have a 1914 hand crank, 1923, 1927 and 1942 Wrinkle (Godzilla) with back tack. I also have two 1956 machines in simple wooden bases. Big thank you to Bob Fowler for helping me with a missing reverse lever 😊. Thank you Bob!

I have a 1923 Singer 99 in a bentwood case, a knee control, but a different style of attached light. There is also a decal that says Great Britain. I don’t believe my machine has an aluminum head, as the head is magnetic and aluminum in non-ferrous. I am really looking forward to this new series! Your videos are truly some of the best I have found on KZfaq. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise!

Thank you! I do my best :) I am excited to test out the knee control and see how hard it would be to fit it with a foot control if you wanted to. I personally like knee controls, no pedals sliding around the floor, haha.

My parents gave me my Singer 192 Spartan when I was 11 years old in the ‘60s. I shudder now to remember some of the things I did as a child learning on this machine! It runs great, has been serviced & timed once (I managed to keep it clean somehow) and it is still my main machine.

I have 5 99k's ranging from 1937-1957. Interestingly, one 1957 is the old style in a bentwood case, the other is in the 2-tone brown and white box. Both have reverse and knee levers. I think the boxed one also has the plain nose plate, while the other 4 all have the ornate one. I'm in NZ, and these seem to be the most common black Singer: followed by the 66 Lotus treadle 6 drawer, and the 201 in various formats.

I have a Singer 15-88 in a wooden base covered with leather?…it has the number JC1222295 on a plate on the machine. The tension gauge is left side of the machine towards the back. The reverse and forward is a numbered stitch length. It works like a charm! I oil it and clean it after each projects. I do keep a toothbrush for that purpose. I do have a light and a foot base. I have no clue what year it is? Got it in 1966. It weighs a ton! I also have a 401J…the first zigzag…inherited from my mother. I quilt!

I have the late model 99. It came with no bass. It came with no motor. It came with no light and I was able to get it completely working. Cleaned up. Take it all apart. Cleaned up. Put back together and it sews great. Now I had a Kenmore 3/4 machine that had a case. I just took that out of that base because it didn't need a base and I used it for the 99. I'm trying to find one I want but that's kind of getting difficult but I like my 99. So between it and the Kenmore 3/4 machine I have two small sewing machines

I have my mother's 1941 Godzilla 99, on which I learned to sew. It has the angled lamp, back tack, a metal Godzilla foot pedal and a numbered tension dial. It also has a walnut bentwood case which I refinished in my youth. About a year ago I rewired her and have replaced the foot pedal with an electronic version. (I have kept the original pedal, but don't use it.) My daughter found me a Featherweight (also a1941), so I have really enjoyed your Featherweight videos too. Interestingly, both machines were manufactured in New Jersey.

I just bought a 1922 99K that looks exactly like the early model you are working on, also a knee lever. (I would love a parts list. I'm in need of a new belt and a new tension spring and my amazon purchases are not Singer brand and do not fit). Your videos are beautifully done; your camera work and voice over are professional, clear, and very helpful as you actually explain what to do if parts are not easily removed. One very comical moment was when things were not working after reassembly and after several removal and reassembles realized the machine needs to be replaced in the case. You mentioned that in your first video which of course I had skipped. Thank you again for all of the detailed work. Loved having a woman to woman instruction without all the extraneous filler or noise, direct and to the point.

Nice! I didn't even realize at first that it was lighter but when I was researching the records and found the note that it was aluminum, I had to go lift it again. I have an old-style 99 that I will have to get down from its shelf to see if it is an aluminum head. I had no idea that some of them were. I also have a newer style 99, so it will be fun to follow along and decide which one I want to work on. In addition, I recently acquired a 185J that has been in an outdoor shed for a long time. Hi! I am excited for it too! From what I have found, the Spartan was made from 1959-1961. So only for a few years and it ended right around the time they stopped making the 99 all together. There was at least one other version of the 99 that I don’t have, hoping this series gives everyone a good idea of how to work on them and maybe eventually I can make some videos on the other versions. There were variations in the hardware on the knee control and also the stitch regulators and tension mechanisms. Probably because they made them for such a long span of time. Whew!

Hi! This series is still in progress and I work on it when I can. Right now I have half of the cleaning footage shot and once that is done I will start the reassembly process. It's taking me longer than I would like to complete, probably because I chose to do two different models of 99's at the same time. And...they are not the only machines on my bench, I work them in between customer machines. Once the cleaning part is finished the reassembly should go much faster, be easier to shoot and edit and share with everyone! All I can say is thank you for your patience! I know there are other versions of 99's out there as well, can you imagine if I tried to do them all? Oof! It's my hope that this process will be able to help at least a few people...that would make me really happy!
