Draiman covers roughly two-and-a-half octaves from bottom to top. His vocals are so distinctive. Disturbed had been nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Rock Performance for their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" while appearing on Conan. -David Draiman : "The fact that I was sick as a dog (laughs). I remember I was definitely fighting something off, but it was a cool experience. It was cool performing with an actual orchestra. It was really vibing and the mood helped, I think, enhance the delivery. The stars just aligned that night and everything went right."

To have those kind of vocals while having the flu and sitting down to sing is badass. When he sings “and in the naked light I saw” and the orchestra blends in it touches my soul every time. What an incredible gift he was given. The way he made it his own by breaking up the word silence to silen-ce is unique

He is amazing! The band choose this song as they usually do one cover per album. They are a heavy metal band. This was completely different from their normal genre. I don’t particularly like their heavy metal but David, his voice, is just the best. Never do I see the band get credit for this. David is a member but the band picked the song and the arrangement gives many goosebumps. This is a song and rendition that at, even four years later, continues to amaze the world. Bravo! If they did an album like this instead of heavy metal, I’m so there. Conan has 1000,000 million views. The reaction videos probably doubles that. Classic, timeless and best rendition of a song ever. They owned it.

I appreciate as I'm sure many do, that you watched the song without interrupting it and commenting. Some reaction videos have the voice teacher talking half the time, without even appreciating how good the rendition is because they are too busy giving feedback. What a gift this song is for those who have not heard... today was the first time I'd heard, never imagined that Draiman could sing like this, never heard him outside of the Disturbed style that I was used to.

That would have been fine if he would have said anything of value after the song was over, but he didn't. Channels like this are why youtube has such stupid copyright rules. There’s a folkloric character in Africa called the “town crier”, which is someone who speaks to the village when danger is coming. The town crier doesn’t scream, he doesn’t yell. The town crier just walks through the village speaking, and he has such a powerful hypnotic authoritative voice that people can’t help but to stop anything they’re doing and just listen to this commanding voice. It raises over any other voice. And it's the voice that the town would rise up to hear, as if they were being called by some powerful force that tunes their minds and souls and shuts down any other thought. That’s David Draiman. His voice is pure soul and will, powerful and with such authority. He means every word, and he makes you feel it in your guts. He touches your deepest strings as soon as he opens his mouth. You feel like you're being called. And this version is outstanding. They say you can listen to the original song as many times as you want, but you never hear the song until you hear this version, and that’s when you hear the song for the first time.

My interpretation of this song: Hello, darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sound of silence Hello, darkness, my old friend is about people that have been kept in the dark and they're telling the darkness that they are experiencing something new in their vision. They (the awakened/aware ones) planted the seeds of truth/Light, and they are just starting to become aware. In restless dreams I walked alone Narrow streets of cobblestone 'Neath the halo of a streetlamp I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night And touched the sound of silence In the second verse they are getting flashes of Light/truths and they are becoming more aware/awakened to lies and there was a faint sound in the silence. And in the naked light I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never share No one dared Disturb the sound of silence And in this moment they saw all of the light workers/star seeds telling those that were still asleep the truth/Light, through telepathy and those the were sleeping heard the message in a very subtle way, but yet they couldn't share this Light/truths with anyone for fear of being attacked by those that controlled the sound of silence. They wrote the truth in songs, the truth had to be give covertly as not to disturb the sound of silence. And when the people became aware of the Light/truth and realized that they had been in darkness the whole time, which really pissed them off. "Fools," said I, "You do not know Silence like a cancer grows Hear my words that I might teach you Take my arms that I might reach you." But my words like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells of silence They reached out to those still in slumber, trying to give them Light/truths, but they wouldn't open their minds to new truths, instead remained in the sound of silence. And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming And the sign said, "The words of the prophets Are written on the subway walls And tenement halls And whispered in the sounds of silence." The people were so caught up in working hard to pay for all of the things, the boats, cars, electronics, all of the toys that they covet. They couldn't see or hear the truth, they were too distracted by consumerism. The awakened/prophets have been trying to tell them through their songs and poems, and that whisper of Light/truth awakened the people from their slumber and they became ONE. Did you notice the ship sailing into the Light at the end of the studio version?

Disturb's Reason to Fight (our addictions?) and Hold on to Memory are among my faves. This song speaks to our human voices, our creative impetus, our message to each others that must not be drowned out by power, by ignorance or apathy. You are important, one person can change the world. Just do it. Talking without speaking, hearing without listening.... this is the internet and media blasts.... worshipping our iphones.... hard times but be a creator, make your life count.

Awesome reaction. I love the fact that you let the song play and enjoyed it to the fullest before commenting. So many others make a lot of stops to comment on the vocals, techniques used, etc. I get that it adds to the video, especially since many doing this are vocal teachers, but in my opinion the initial reaction should be of the whole song undisturbed, no pun intended, and then if need be, go back and comment on various snipets.

What makes David a great singer is that his voice was classical trained for a cantor.... What makes this performance special, he totally nailed the vocals and he was sick when they were on Conan....

I became a fan of his when I heard this song. His voice is absolutely amazing. At the time he did this song he was actually quite sick. I don't even like heavy metal but I got the Evolution CD for this song and a few others. This was his ballad CD and it is great.
