The biggest factor in the different styles is how their voice matured with age. Their voice gets a bit deeper and way fuller and it's more obvious in the female singers I think.

In Axl's defense, that was 2014, he had just changed his technique to the healthier approach of being a head belt instead of pure throat. He wasn't super comfortable with this placement yet and you can hear that. Now, (Not In This Lifetime era), he has totally dialed it in and it sounds much better and healthier.

We need a video where Joel is brutally honest about the singing Edit: I didn’t mean for this comment to be so controversial. I've seen Heart a few times over the past 20 years and Ann Wilson has maintained her voice really well- it's actually crazy considering she's older and heavier than she was when she recorded most of their iconic songs AND she was a smoker for many years. It's a bit more reserved than her old belting, but still very impressive and consistent.

I think Rhianna is more honest in her natural singing voice now. I feel like she's commented on this before but i can't remember where.. but she was pressured into a particular singing style by producers, but now she lets her accent come through a lot more and the sound is far more relaxed. definitely think she is better. may not be as 'perfect' but more genuine and i think that makes it better.

I don't know why people keep saying this. Axl was the clean one. He was an absolute maniac and had undiagnosed mental issues for..well..decades, but he was never the junkie the rest of the band was. Everyone gets drunk once in a while, and he enjoyed the odd mushroom, but heroin/pills/black out drunkenness was left for the others. Axl was just nuts, and didn't eat healthy and didn't continue exercising. it was because he was stone cold sober, that he was able to take the name of the band away from the other 2. He does seem to have gotten the right help now, though. His mental state appears much more stable, and he looks a lot happier on stage, which may have contributed to his weight loss and regaining a lot of his past vocal abilities.

Jon Anderson of Yes is a good case study in how a voice can start out ok, followed by some struggling years (thinking of some ABWH-era performances here - a time when he'd put on a bit of weight), and then end up (arguably; taking into consideration 40+ years of service and chronic asthma) pretty damned good.

For Axl: As you said this way of singing was really unhealthy or at least not the healthiest one. Also his vocals are really difficult to keep clean and good with time And btw there are not much people capable of singing his songs as good as he was able to. Most of the singers in the video weren’t singing in 1988 : let’s see them in 2030 and maybe we will be able to compare in a fairest way. Even if it’s probably easier to keep your voice as a pop singer than as a rock (or harder genres) vocalist (even though some have). But we all agree on one thing : wtf happened with him? The only answer is that he’s Axl and no one could have ever changed that guy.

His voice was the worst in 2013-2014. He actually got vocal coaching and took better care of his voice and improved quite a lot - as you said, his voice is very difficult to keep good with time, and he did not really take care of it for quite some time. He realised he needs to do something about it after the band reunited, and improved afterwards. I had to see it to believe it, saw GnR live in 2017 and boy did he sound good.

Yes, his singing style was super unhealthy, yet Axl's voice was so iconic and G'n'R was one of the best bands at that time! Appetite for Destruction was the first CD I bought (giving away my age here... bet some people here don't even know what a CD is lol)!

@@NaznoorRino Yeah I saw a performance the other day and it was actually good! The thing is, as you said, he didn’t took care of his voice and with vocals like his, it’s was pretty sure that he would sound worse than he used to. I hate that people criticize him when they don’t know his history and make a fool of him with his worst performances. He’s actually learned from his mistakes. His voice is for me one of the greatest voice that have ever existed

@@yt_account Hell yeah GnR was one of the best bands at that time. And I personally think it’s still one of the most iconic of all time. Like it’s one of the first band I ever listened to! I’m glad that, as a 16 year old person, I know what a CD is (some really don’t know, they scare me 😂) and that I’m able to listen to great bands like GnR thanks to my parents music tastes. But I’m so sad I wasn’t born earlier, to be able to go to some bands bests shows in history. It also makes me sad that most of the people don’t care about rock and metal because there are so many talented artists!

Tbh on the chorus of 2014 version he sounds much better then I personally expected. But I think that if you’re doing this “roar” vocals it’s actually damaging and impossible to keep it all the way. But maybe he would sound better if he kept his body being in shape and used less drugs and alcohol (same goes for Liam Gallagher).

I also think for those who got better, performing for a few hours and dancing and singing is super difficult too as opposed to a studio. So if they seem "out of breath" earlier in their careers, they also might have adjusted to performing more often and know how to pace themselves better. Or also, in general, the clip could have been taken towards the end or beginning of a concert, where they would most likely feel a little more drained.

I mean, it's just so different that way compared to in the 80s, and it does sound healthier, and he is old, and it wasn't the worst singing. But of course his old voice has that, idk Axel Rose charm to it. Like, when you hear it, you know its him. Like Adam Levine. and now that's more or less gone. hm, strange.
