She had to smoke a cigarette during her number, but she had never smoked in her life. So they took a few hours for her to learn to smoke. She did the number, and she said she never smoked again. What an elegant, and lovely lady Cyd was!

As a kid, Donald O'Connor was one of my favorite movie stars NOT for "Singing in the Rain" but for "Francis" (1950). Donald O'Connor plays a WWII Lt. who is sent to a psychiatric ward when he insists that an Army mule named Francis can speak to him. Western star Chill Wills was the voice of Francis. The movie was so popular that there was a total of 7 movies with "Francis the Talking Mule".

Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) and her mom, Debbie Reynolds, died 1 day apart, Carrie on Dec 27, 2016 and Debbie on Dec 28, 2016. Carrie had a heart attack 4 days earlier on an airplane and per her brother, Debbie died from heartbreak a day after Carrie. At least they had 1 last Christmas together. Debbie loved Christmas so much that she kept her Christmas tree up year round. RIP two great ladies.

This movie simply makes me happy. It has ever since I was a kid. The humor employed here is similar to many of Gene Kelly's movies as well as the Fred and Ginger movies and is something that is missing in modern cinema.

Gene Kelly asked Donald O'Connor to do the somersault off the wall because he had seen O'Connor do that in a dance number years before. But O'Conner hadn't done it in years and was a heavy smoker, so when he did it for the movie he said it nearly killed him!

Gene Kelly was a perfectionist. He once guest starred on "The Muppet Show" and Kermit asked him if he would do his famous rain dance. Gene said no because he was afraid he wouldn't be able to repeat his perfect performance from "Singin' in the Rain" and didn't want to ruin the illusion for his fans. Also, that Kathy dubbing for Lena was actually dubbed by a singer named Betty Noyes! I've watched this a hundred times and I still maintain that the "Moses Supposes" scene is one of the most enjoyable dance sequences I've seen.

Fun fact: when she came out of the cake and he made fun of her by saying look it's Ethel Barrymore. Ethel Barrymore was Drew Barrymores great aunt.

This was my mom's favorite movie. In the early 2000s there was a movie festival over that summer where a theater showed one classic movie a week for the entire summer. One week was Singing in the Rain. I took my mom to one of the showings. She had the biggest smile on her face all through the movie.

Every song in this movie, came from another movie. The script writers were basically handed a list of songs from a bunch of different movies, then challenged to write a screen play that included them all. It's funny, just the other day, I casually wondered to my sister, "Wonder if the reactors will ever get to Singin' In The Rain?" I grew up on old musicals. It is not abnormal, for example, for my sisters and I to get into "Moses Supposes" in Walmart. Embarrasses the hell out of my wife, lol. She just doesn't get it 🤣

This is my favourite musical. I watch it two or three times a year and never got bored. The Moses Supposes scene is just a joy to watch, Gene and Donald were SO talented.

Sunset Boulevard is another terrific movie about the impact of the switch from silent films to talkies, an all-time classic!

I grew up watching musicals due to my mom's love for them. This is one of the more memorable ones. My Fair Lady, South Pacific, Oklahoma, The King And I, The Sound Of Music and this one were among her favorites.

Debbie Reynolds at 19 was put through the ringer to get her scenes right but she never let's it show on the screen. What a picture!!

When I was a little boy, my mom used to say to me "Moses supposes his toeses are roses, but Moses supposes erroneously." I never knew where she got that until I saw this movie. 😁

I volunteered for the spay/neuter clinics in Montana for a long time. We catered to low income. A lot of people in the towns we would go to would give us a room for the nights we had to be there. Anyway, one time this woman offered her house up, she was out of town and knew one of the women also volunteering. I went in and there was this amazing wall of pictures. I looked at them and thought wait... isn't that Gene Kelly? I asked the woman and she said yeah, he's her grandfather. Amazing photos of family over the years. Another good musical romance from the 50s is "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers".

Very nostalgic movie to me, watched it as a kid. Gotta say, that whole Gene Kelly Fred Astaire showmanship.... today I feel like it's a lost art. It's like you said, let's see those tiktok dancers do that. The choreography, the moves, the singing, the months of endless practice... those guys were inhuman to be able to give us all that in such a seamless way.

Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire are considered the greatest male dancers of classic Hollywood. Any film you see with either of them in it, will have the most innovative and technically perfect dance sequences.

I'm 55, grew up in the 70's and 80's. I was exposed to the older movies as well as the current ones at the time. The fact that we didn't have as many ways to view movies at the time played a factor, but also having parents that were teens at the time these great movies were made in the late 40's early 50's helped too. Hollywood studios resisted for years to convert to sound movies because of the expense of converting every movie theater in the country to sound. When Hollywood finally decided to convert to sound pictures one studio made every player it had under contract to stand under a microphone and recite a nursery rhyme to test their voices.

Greetings Cassie Kathy is played by Debbie Reynolds. She was a Tripple Threat actress: singing, acting, dancing. She is also the mother of Carrie Fisher. During the 'Singing in the Rain' scene, Gene was suffering from a high temperature from the flue, but ever the constant overachiever, he struggled to complete it. I read somewhere that it took about 25 to 30 takes to get it just right. You can kind of hear it in his singing voice when he gets on the light pole. Anyways, glad you enjoy it, and you might get around to watching some of the others of this era of Hollywood musicals. Maybe you can get Carly to join for 1 of them. Have a great 1.

When the screenwriters came up with the idea for making the story about the transition between silent film and talking pictures, there were still many technicians, etc, who were able to fill in details anoit the time. It was also true that there were many actors and actresses because of accents or their voices simply not matching their appearances.

I loved this movie as a young kid about 5 years old. I first saw and loved Donald O'Connor when he starred in the B&W Francis the Talking Mule series of 5 movies. I highly recommend them. Donald and Francis got into all kinds of zany trouble. The 5 movies were all set in WWII overseas. I was also fascinated by WWII as a 5 year old to the point it made me wonder about reincarnation! One of the things he did that I had never seen is that HE COULD DANCE UP A VERTICAL WALL for several feet like gravity didn't apply! He would rush a wall at speed and nearly reach the ceiling while dancing on the wall! He did a flip off the wall and when he hit the floor was still dancing. You have to see it.

Whenever it rains, I couldn’t help but sing this song. By the way, the actress who played Kathy Selden in this movie is Debbie Reynolds, who is the mother of Carrie Fisher ( Princess Leia ). May they R.I.P.

The editing was so well done for this. It was cohesive, the musical numbers still flowed and somehow at 30 minutes it didn't feel like it was missing anything. Kudos to the editor! 👏

There are many films that are called "classics," but only a few are truly so. These are the ones that set the bar for the rest. _Casablanca_ is one. And so is _Singing in the Rain._ Perfection is rare, but it sometimes happens.

The incredible thing about the dancing in the rain number is that Gene Kelly was SICK, with a temp of over 101, I believe, when it was filmed. What a trooper. Love this film!!!

I love those old movies from the 50s that I would see on TV when I was a little kid sick home from school in the 70s and this is one of my favorites. Donald O'Connor, who played Cosmo in this film, has always been one of my favorites. He has been in many movies and was an excellent dancer, as good as Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire. Cyd Charisse is another favorite of mine. She was the seductive woman in green dress w the gangsters and the long flowing white dress in the Gotta Dance sequence.

As for Kathy actor Debbie Reynolds she went on to star in multiple amazing films and became a Disney icon when she starred in Halloweentown (one series to watch). Loved watching this film with my gran growing up. Awesome reaction as always.

The titular song, and the way it's performed in the movie, might be the best depiction of new love in film history. The way he is oblivious to the weather and giddy with excitement really comes across in the sequence. Good movie to start the month with Cassie.

The first time I saw this movie was in college when they had a sort of outdoor festival and displayed the movie up on the side of a white building. I smiled all the way through it, and all the way to my dorm till my face hurts from smiling so much! It still makes me smile whenever I watch it; it is a huge mood booster, lol.

Poor Debbie Reynolds was repeatedly made to rehearse the dance to "Good Morning" by Gene Kelly, a self admitted perfectionist. By the end, her feet were bleeding.

Fred Astaire, who was in an adjacent dance studio, found her crying under a piano and reassured her that all of her hard work was worth the effort.

To see her range in another style of acting see The Asphalt Jungle, a film noir about a brilliant jewel heist gone wrong. A true classic. I've watched your videos from day one. ❤

About a year before her passing Debbie Reynolds happened to see a stage production one of my former co-workers was in. Afterwards Reynolds came up to her and said she was fantastic! I’m sure that meant more to Sarah than all the Gold in the world!

I love these kinds of old musicals! They're so sweet and innocent and fun when these days we live in a world where everyone tries to make things dark and depressing and dark and violent and dark and cynical. And did I mention dark? Even comedies these days try to be too clever or have a lot of a kind of bitterness at their base. Sometimes we just need a bit of true fun .

He was the greatest dancer that ever live IMO. A true perfectionist. The “good mornin’” number was done over 40 times and Debbie said her feet were bleeding but she loved doing the film. She said Gene co-directed this film and had a lot on his shoulders. Some articles say they didn’t get along but that’s true at all. Donald O’Connor said one time Gene got mad at him and told him to “stop fooling around,” and later Gene went back and apologized to him and said that he was afraid to take his anger out on Debbie because he didn’t want to scare her away. He was frustrated that she wasn’t learning the the steps as quickly as he would have liked. Debbie wasn’t a dancer but they hired her because she had the “look,” they were looking for. Back in those days everything had to be done to perfection and Gene was so hard on himself because he wanted to perform at top 🔝 speed. Donald was also a terrific dancer and he said the number “make em laugh,” was Gene’s request. This trio was amazing. The number that Gene does by himself in the rain said that he had a 104 temperature but said he wanted to do the scene anyways. That’s dedication. ❤️🙏🙏 Just don’t find that nowadays. Love all these old movies like “White Christmas,” etc. Love all the glamour!! Gene also directed Hello Dolly starring Barbara Streisand which is also Ana amazing movie musical! I’ve never been a big fan of musicals, but I love this movie. It’s one of my all time favorites. I wish there had been a sequel where Cosmo got his time to shine and get the girl at the end.

Almost always forget that Gene’s 3 Musketeers was at the begging of this. Also the fact that in the scene where Cosmo does “make them laugh”, Don (a smoker) had to rerecord it. The first time they filmed it, do to no film in the camera.

That part in the beginning where the two guys in green and white plaid are dancing and the one leaning back on the other as they walked must had taken major choreography. Wow!
