Final video in the series for the Dual Carb vs. Single Carb comparisons. We get to see how the single carb manifolds do now that the Carb is rejetted. I was actually surprised at how well the unequal length runner one did, but totally blown away on how BAD the equal runner one did !

Thanks man 👍. It usually does take me more time to edit the videos than to do the actual work lol, but it is fun to see it all come together and paint the picture of the results. Thanks again and all the best !

Super glad you did this. I have never considered going to a single carb on my 1982 xv920. You showed me how to sync them in a video a few years ago, it not hard or difficult and now I know why it's better. Thanks

Thanks man 👍. Yep, for me, I’ll be sticking with the dual carbs since, like you said, once to get the process down to sync them, they perform really well. From the testing, the motor seemed so much happier and the throttle was much smoother with the dual carbs for sure. If someone was wanting to get that extra lower rpm torque, the dual carbs can easily be fitted with air pods and the jets increased to compensate for the extra air and you get the same result along with the stability of the dual carbs. I set my Bobber up this way with the stock dual carbs and it pulls like a horse and I still can tune each cylinder for the best performance. Thanks again and all the best ! Steve

Thanks ! It was interesting to see how the single carbs did vs. the stock dual ones for sure. Finally settles it in my mind that properly adjusted duals make the two cylinders work together much better. I will have to say that pulling a single carb off is a ton easier than pulling off the duals so if I ever find the right manifold design that balanced the two cylinders it would be the best of both worlds 👍. Thanks again and all the best ! Steve.

Looks like i commented on the last video before I got to see this one. But i think you see the 'fuel after intake' principal that I was talking about in my last comment. In short, due to uneven firing intervals of 60° v twins: one cylinder is stealing the charge of the other one. The fuel theft is more apparent with the equal intake than the intake that compensates better by being different runner sizes. In theory there is a way to design a manifold for unequal firing similar to how audi carbureted an inline 5. But it has some intense design requirements to get equal fuel and air to each cyl.

Hey again, yep, it becomes even more obvious with the equal runner for the imbalance for sure…a bit opposite to what I was imagining, but none the less made for a good test as it further confirms how much the cylinder firing comes into play. In thinking about it a bit more after the testing, since these are wasted spark ignitions, I should be able to change the front cylinder’s timing (basically 180 out from normal), and have both cylinders fire on the same rotation. Might not run very well (who knows till we try, lol !), but it should show a difference in the lean or rich condition compared to the normal timing. I might experiment with different runner lengths just to see if one can be made, but the biggest thing for me was the confirmation that running dual carbs is much better for balancing since each can be adjusted and are independent 👍

Most of the signal manifold I have seen for these bikes. The front pipe is shorter then the back cylinder.

Yep, definitely seems to make a difference 👍. Probably with a few trials, the correct lengths could be found that would balance the two cylinders I would think

Nice job Steve. Yes, I like my duals better and they aren't that hard to work with after removing and replacing a couple of times. Funny the way I think, but one of my first thoughts after seeing all of the results is; I wonder how much better the older Harleys would run if running two carbs. The Japanese have shown us they have pretty good engineering and if one carb could be made to operate better, I think that bike would have come from the factory with one carb. Then I thought, well, I wonder how a bike set up with two carbs with long runners that were connected in the middle would run and perform. Kind of the idea an X or H pipe in the exhaust system of a car will effect performance.

Thanks man 👍. Yep, for me, the dual carbs are the way to go as well since each cylinder can be optimized. I don’t mind them either for adjusting and sync’ing (but I’ll admit I don’t like having to take them off so much, lol !). I’ll have to say that if someone wasn’t good at dealing with the duals and getting them adjusted correctly, a properly jetted single with a well designed manifold should work better than poorly tuned duals.

Answers the duel vs single carb question for me. Many thanks. I have an 82 which is running fine for now. You recommended a carb upgrade to ones with 'pumpers'. Which ones?
@StevesDIYs
@StevesDIYs 7 ай бұрын
Thanks man 👍. Yep, if I was planning to replace my stock 1st Gen dual carbs with newer ones (of if someone was swapping to a single carb with a manifold), I would pick the type with the acceleration pumps (thus the name “pumper carb”) so when the throttle is opened to accelerate, the little pumper circuit adds extra fuel just as the throttle is opened to smooth out the initial acceleration. This would keep the AFR from going lean just as the throttles were opened like what I saw in the testing. I believe the 2nd Gen Virago Mikuni carbs are the pumper type so I’d probably grab a set of them if I was swapping as they would be direct fit to the cylinders. For just a single pumper type carb for a single carb manifold, there are many available in the 36 mm to 38 mm range that have the accelerator pump built in…I haven’t looked for any though so I’m not sure which ones would be the best to choose. Thanks again and all the best !

It would be nice if you could test à Mikuni VM38. Single and dual that's what I'm running on my bike. There is a ton of needles, needle jets, air jets, pilot jets, main jets and slide cutaway. But all of thèse parts cost money. Maybe you could get some donor's. Thanks for all you're good work.

👍. Yep, it would be interesting to try some more modern carbs to see how they compare. After the testing, I was thinking that the 40mm Hitachis may be a bit too big in the throat so the smaller diameter runners may be messing up the air and fuel flow. At least seeing that the equal length runner one made things worse, that says that there much be a good unequal dimension that would balance the two cylinders. I still haven’t given up on finding out why the cylinders act differently, but that’s gonna take some more testing lol !

That would be pretty interesting since those have the air chamber in the middle that might help to balance things out 👍. Maybe they will see the video and send me one to compare as it would be some good comparison testing for them 😃

Hey man ! I’m actually not sure where he sells them from as he contacted me from the “Virago Nation- All things Yamaha Virago” Facebook forum to see if I wanted to test the ones he designed. If you have Facebook, hop out on the forum as he has his messaging setup (which is how he contacted me). If not, let me know and I’ll message him to see if he can provide a link 👍.

So more torque down low with the single carb? Maybe the fuel is atomized better, smaller diameter inlet, more suction, better low rpm performance. Guessing.
@StevesDIYs

Hey man ! Yep, not really sure either as there seems to be quite a bit going on inside the manifold if the design differences affect the results so much.
