Jack haven’t heard from you for a long time it seems. Glad your posting alot again. Great explanation of the open doubles about at faster speeds push pull or 1 stroke pull fingers back 👏👏. Also closed rolls pinching 3 fingers. 👍 Great job !

This has always been somewhat of a mystery to me. Especially when incorporating a buzz roll into a song and having to cymbal crash on a down beat. The hand doing the crash has to be available at the precise moment. So basically what I'm saying is the buzz roll would have to be done at the tempo of the song. Make sense? David Garibaldi (Tower of Power) incorporates this nicely in some of their ballets.

Great question, to which the answer is both yes and no. In modern popular music, and also most often, a drummer WILL have a specific subdivision at work whilst executing and somewhat "hiding" this fact during the execution of a smooth sounding buzz roll. There are also times however, where buzz strokes AND stated time can be mutually occurring and creating the best musical choice. And also times of complete musical freedom in which only sounds matter that we call and even notate as "free time." What will always matter most however is our sound, and these and crucial techniques along with any others we learn arm us with more options to either create or serve the music we are involved with. As lastly, Garibaldi (a funk specialist and author of possibly my favourite drum book ever, Future Sounds, and amongst many other things too) would be delighted that you thought of him and his equally exquisite "ballad" playing too. And I'll pay it forward and also thank Jack for allowing me to refine my own teaching skills here by thinking, writing, and attempting to contribute here on his excellent channel.
