I agree. I just commented that. I've drilled that in my kid's head. My bf and I was talking about it one day and I told him that he could take the headrest of ad break the window. He was like really never thought about that. So we went to my 9 year old daughter and and asked what she needed to do if she was trapped In a sinking car to get out. She goes take my headrest off and break the window.

if your car doesn't have removable headrest's you could also take the seat belt buckle and use the metal part to try and smash the window or jam it between the window & door to break the window. (as in like use it like a lever if that makes sense)

Never been in this situation, but have been 'prepped' for it since a younger age. Also always have something nearby that can break the window if necessary. Other than that and other tips (those mentioned in this video mostly) I've also practiced holding my breath, and free diving and snorkeling etc. from a young age. May not be enough depending on specifics, but I've long felt pretty well prepared for things like this.

The head rest is also for breaking windows. Pull it out and use the metal prongs. That's why they are shaped almost pointy

i always carry sumt with a glass breaker and seatbelt cutter for this exact reason, keeping a seatbelt cutter close to you in a car can save you valuable seconds getting people free (not everyone in the car might be calm enough to think about they're seatbelts) also in the event of a crash the cars body is typically deformed and you may not be able to rech the button to unbuckle yourself... so thats my tip

Wouldn't the knife itself work perfectly as is to break the glass? Even if it does bend the tip a bit.

Robert Harris No they are quite ineffective. As that’s not what they’re designed for. The material and design is insufficient to efficiently break glass. But great to slice or stab soft non scattering materials. Glass breakers are designed to create a lot of force and are often hardened with certain materials. Which is needed to scatter glass efficiently. If it’s the only thing available tho then why not.

Another thing you can use to break a window is the head of a car seat (usually only the front ones come out) because in a lot of cars they are removable

it's worth noting that cars do have an in-built windo breaker. The headrests. Pull the headrest out of the seat and use the pointy-end of the metal bars that hold it into the seat to smash the window. Also remember that cars with electric windows, the electric windows will probably still work for a few seconds after the car has hit the water. The car's computer will short out almost immediatly but even on mondern cars, the electric windows aren't connected to the drive computer.

For many cars the headrests can be used to break windows in case of emergencies, though it isn't true for every vehicle. The tools are of course better but it's a idea in case you are ever in that situation.

Your headrest can also be used to break the window using the metal post that goes down into the slot.

This is all situational. No matter what get out of the car some how, or die. In a situation where you are in fairly calm water and lets say, not knocked out. Yes roll the window down, you might experience a initial in flow of water rushing. As long as you are in calm water, not fast moving water. In fast moving water, the situations can vary but again as long as you are not knocked out obviously. Get out of the car, fast moving water could be dangerous for rolling down your window at first. If you are completely submerged and sinking/ sunk to the bottom of the body of water/ river bed. Open the door if possible or break the window if it cannot be rolled down.

I distinctly remember Adam Savage's advice from Mythbusters: KEEP A COMMERCIAL GLASS BREAKER IN YOUR CAR. I sometimes find my headrests are difficult to remove, so having a glass breaker as a backup puts me at ease.

I watched an old top gear video in which Richard Hammond tried the trick of waiting for equal pressure and it didn't work (he was in a controlled environment). He only got out of the car on a different attempt by opening the door the minute he hit the water.

I'd use the metal seat belt buckle to smash the window. They are designed to smash if hit in the corner so go for one of the 4 corners to make it easier

I went through the ice while traveling on a 4×4 four-wheeler and saved my passenger that was riding on back seat. He had gotten knocked out at first crashing stop by the broken ice hole made by the 6×6 Polaris sportsman 6×6. Felt like 1000's of needless stabbing me while being under water.

315 / 5000 I actually practiced this a few years ago. But from an airplane body in a pool. Black goggles and then a few laps so you do not know where up is. Scary worse, and the number one seat belt is so true. We had many people in my group who actually forgot and had to take the oxygen to help :)

I've gone through underwater egress training and you don't unbuckle your harness until all violent movement has stopped. The last thing you want is to be knocked out cold because you released your harness too soon and you slam your head.
