Lyrics below:
Sickly sweet, his poison seeks
For the young ones who don't understand
The danger in his hands
With a jaundiced wink, see his cunning slink
Oh, trust in me, my pretty one
Come walk with me, my helpless one
Candyman
Syrup lies upon your tongue
Gelatin saliva spills
A flash of a guillotine, a smile
Candyman
Oh, Candyman
No pity for him
Their misery screams unspeakable things
No pity for him
Their misery screams unspeakable things
Candyman
A cool missile, yes, it's in his smile
With open arms to welcome you
Beware the masked pretender
He always lies, this Candyman
Those lips conspire in treachery
To strike in cloak and dagger, see?
Candyman
Oh, Candyman
And all the children, he warns, "Don't tell"
Those threats are sold
With their guilt and shame
They think they're to blame for Candyman
Candyman

I wish I was still a teenager when this song came out and I just thought it was a cool song. That was long before I knew everything about this song. It always guts me to hear it and to think about what Siouxsie Sioux went through as a child. For those of you that don't know (if you don't want to know stop reading now) this song is about the sexual assault of Siouxsie Sioux at the age of nine, she and a friend were sexually assaulted by a stranger. The assault was ignored by both her parents and the police, and was not spoken of in the family. The incident and its later treatment would lead Siouxsie to distrust adults. Years later, she stated: "I grew up having no faith in adults as responsible people. And being the youngest in the family I was isolated - I had no one to confide in. So I invented my own world, my own reality. It was my own way of defending myself - protecting myself from the outside world. The only way I could deal with how to survive was to get some strong armour." 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

The instrumentation and the vocals in this song are literally amazing. The way Siouxsie plays with her voice and responds to herself in different tonalities is beautiful. The drumming and the guitars are fantastic. I don't know any equivalent to this brilliant and original style even among other great bands. However the story behind this beautiful song is dramatic and heartbreaking when you know it relates to Siouxsie own childhood.

It's about Dean Corll, the "Candyman", who lured teenage boys with candy, and then he would torture them before killing them. That's what this song is about, it's what the 1992 movie is based off of. It has absolutely nothing to do with sexual assault, but child murder carried about by one of the most heinous serial killers in American history. You posers don't know shit, these goths from the 80's didn't care at all about the shit you care about, these songs are about history, SciFi, art, love, but there aren't any that were written about sexual assault. You posers would have been stabbed in the day, for being posers. Goth/punk isn't soft music for soft people, MTV just made it that way. Go back to listening to Taking Back Sunday.

Love Siouxsie and the Banshees! Her music sounds better than alot of stuff that's out now. Is it fair to say that she was ahead of her time?🤔 Because I really think so.

I don't think she was ahead of her time, I think that the whole scene was a decade ahead of it's time, and she was undoubtfull the queen of aheadness ;)

This was the first song I've ever heard by Siouxsie and the Banshees. I remember hearing it when I was younger and then my dad gave it to me last year on cassette. It's one of my favorite songs. Not to mention, the breakdowns on this song are legendary.

Out of curiosity: What did you think of the song, "This Unrest"? Some heavy stuff...esp. the vision of "metal and flesh" fusing; considering where technology and humanity are in the 21st Century.

Still remember the afternoon I purchased this album (along w/ TTLG) in 1987, brought it home, and got probably the best education in Gothic Romantic poetry and language in my life from this remarkable Lady. Tinderbox was a classic right after its first play.

What a cool pop single! They are warriors: the beat is an attack on the senses and this sinuous bassline is a marvel. The guitars shimmer, the lyrics are subversive and they even manage to slide a word like "guillotine" into the a-side of a single. A tour de force & this video is so beautiful, great picture, great shots.

this song is actually based on a certain dean corll, who was basically the predecessor to john wayne gacy, a pedophile and a sexual sadist who tortured and killed killed well over 28 children and teens, his mother owned a candy factory right next to a primary school and dean used to work there while handing children from the school free candy, hence the nickname - candyman, there's a great book on the topic written by Jack Olsen, an absolutely amazing true crime writer, absolutely bone chilling story.
