Lyrics below:
Creeping up the backstairs
Slinking into dark stalls
Shapeless and slumped in bath chairs
Furtive eyes peep out of holes
She has many guises
She′ll do what you want her to
Playing dead and sweet submission
Cracks the whip deadpan on cue
Peek-a-boo, peek-a-boo
Peek-a-boo, peek-a-boo
Reeking like a pig sty
Peeling back and gagging free
Flaccid ego in your hand
Chokes on dry tears, can you understand?
She's jeering at the shadows
Sneering behind a smile
Lunge and thrust to pout and pucker
Into the face of the beguiled
Peek-a-boo, peek-a-boo
Golly jeepers, where′d you get those peepers?
Peepshow, creepshow, where did you get those eyes?
Strobe lights pump and flicker
Dry lips crack out for more
Come bite on this rag doll, baby
Well, that's right, now hit the floor'
They′re sneaking out the back door
She gets up from all fours
Rhinestone fools and silver dollars
Curdle into bitter tears
Peek-a-boo, peek-a-boo
Peek-a-boo, peek-a-boo
Golly jeepers, where′d you get those weepers?
Peepshow, creepshow, where did you get those eyes?
Golly jeepers, where'd you get those peepers?
Peepshow, creepshow, where did you get those eyes?
Golly jeepers, where′d you get those weepers?
Peepshow, creepshow, were did you get those eyes?
Where did you get those eyes?
Where did you get those eyes?

When I went to the first Lollapalooza in the early 90's, Siouxsie came on at dusk, and totally set the stage for the final act ending with the headliner, Jane's Addiction. That was an incredible day and lineup way back then, all the acts were amazing, and some stood out and were simply stellar. Without a doubt, it was one of the best concerts I've ever seen.

Siouxsie set the stage for everyone goth. The Cure are far more famous in the US, but Robert Smith would be nothing without her, and in-fact, when The Banshees have been between guitarists he's toured with them as their guitar player, standing off quietly on the side of the stage playing his part while the true legend leads. Check out the songs "Spellbound" and "Happy House".

Who cares about American labels... the Banshees were making much more original and adventurous music in the late 70s and early 80s. Check out Metal Postcard or Spellbound or Arabian Knights or Staircase Mystery.

Billboard Magazine debuted the "Modern Rock" chart on September 10, 1988. Peek-A-Boo was the very first song to chart at #1. Though the chart's had a few name changes and format changes, it still exists today. But Siouxsie and the Banshees will always have this kudo.

"Labeled" by whom? Considering it came out in the summer of '88, what would you call all of the alternative music prior to that? Not everyone was listening to Van Halen and Michael Jackson in the 80s.

Yes. It's a song about men who are sick of having their privacy invaded by the likes of Elsa Hall.

“Alternative” was just how the big corporates killed indie music (artists and independent labels). The parallel movement behind the scenes was all the takeovers of independent labels, which accelerated after the Wall Street crash of 1987. But go back just ten years, and in 1978, in the wake of the nascent punk movement, labels like Cherry Red, Rough Trade, and Mute had started up, and a support structure soon followed, including independent pressing, distribution and promotion. By January 1980 there was an Indie Chart, officially called the UK Independent Singles and Albums Charts. Around 1985 Music Week started compiling it’s own indie chart. While in the US many college radio stations were playing what Rolling Stone et al disparagingly called “jock rock”. Then by 1990 almost every major record label had formed their own “indie labels”, diluting the original Indie Chart from 1980. Actually, many alternative artists of the 1990s were really just failed pop stars given an “indie makeunder” by the big labels. And real indie got swept under the rug...Cue the phoney, apolitical apathetic rebellion of grunge and the New Labour Patriotism, anti-punk nostalgia of Britpop.

The lyrics to this song are absolutely amazing Creeping up the backstairs Slinking into dark stalls Shapeless and slumped in bath chairs Furtive eyes peep out of holes She has many guises She'll do what you want her to Playing dead and sweet submission Cracks the whip deadpan on cue Peekaboo x4 Reeking like a pigsty Peeling back and gagging free Flaccid ego in your hand Chokes on dry tears, can you understand She's jeering at the shadows Sneering behind a smile Lunge and thrust to pout and pucker Into the face of the beguiled Peekaboo x2 Golly Jeepers Where'd you get those peepers Peepshow creepshow Where did you get those eyes Strobe lights pump and flicker Dry lips crack out for more Come bite on this rag doll baby That's right now hit the floor They're seeking out the backdoor She gets up from all fours Rhinestone fools and silver dollars Curdle into bitter tears Peekaboo x2 Golly Jeepers Where'd you get those weepers Peepshow creepshow Where did you get those eyes

"Mom, Dad, the carnival's here! Can I go see 'em? Pleeeeeease?" ;) I was 21 when this released, heard it on KROQ frequently (those who lived in the L.A. area in the 1980s know of what I speak). Brings back memories of that summer of 1988 (had just finished my undergrad degree, was working a retail summer job before heading off to grad school). Good times. Great album.

TP - I think you're right, Mate. I know that S&tB's re-did the backing tracks several times to get that sound which involved quite a bit of backwards-studio-trickery (I don't know the technical term for it). Interestingly enough, around the same time this came out I seem to remember, Elvis Costello did an album called something like 'Spike - The Beloved Entertainer' which featured similar studio trickery - must've been something-in-the-water back then, I guess ! Still, a very arresting song, production AND video - first time I've seen it since '88. Years ahead still.

Not all of it. It is based around the brass part reversed from an earlier John Cale session. If you reverse TOO much stuff the listener loses reference. This can be listened to an analyzed for quite a while though! I really like how asymmetric the song bits are too, it's hardly predictable. The way the bass hits come in randomly and the beat changes up. ONE guitar chord played in the whole song.
