Seen as a hero by the people of Plymouth, but as a consort of the Devil by the people of Dartmoor, I visit Buckland Abbey to look into Drake's polarised legacy in the Westcountry.

Love finding these videos. I’ve been doing research since finding out I’m his brother Thomas’s 11th great grand daughter

Very interesting, George! So well put together - both the scrip and the visuals, as always. As for this man - I'm sure you know exactly where I stand - there's nothing heroic in causing so much suffering and being a self-serving pompous adventuring narcissist. “Don't Gain The World & Lose Your Soul; Wisdom Is Better Than Silver Or Gold.” - Good old Bob. 💚

Excellent work. Free from the shackles of revsionism and, more importantly, the usual tedious approach to local history. The truth is that people can be both good and bad, at all levels. The observation about religion and racism is spot on.

Another Briliant video! I love this kind of unbiased content that truly tells a narrative instead of spewing out a load of nonsense well done

Since when has moral behaviour been part of the English naval tradition ? As Churchill said; It's all 'Rum, Sodomy and the Lash'. I'll settle for 'Heroic bastard'.

Thank you. Really well put together. With regard to Drakes Leat… I believe that mill owners in the river from where the water was diverted complained as they lost their power source and had to close. There was parliamentary enquiry and Drake was found to be innocent. The person leading the enquiry? Sir Francis Drske!

I have to agree with your verdict. I walk past his birthplace pretty often and pass his statue (the real one) everyday. To be honest Tavistock has a history of money grabbing bustards, from the monks to the present MP, it's obviously in the water.

Well….. you’ve made a new sub out of me! I absolutely loved this vid and I’ve learned something too. I agree with your thoughts at the end entirely, he does indeed sound like a bar steward….. I love your sense of humour and informative style…. Excellent work! Now watching another!! 🥰🥰

Love the historical information and your perspective. Drake is my 15th great grand uncle. Verified this through AncestryDNA records and research. My dream is to go to buckland abbey. Great podcast episode!

The meme landed with Alex (who is 13) so good work winning over the yoot. He could have done with this for his homework a few months earlier is the only complaint 😂

More of these and the likes, please. Would be interested to learn more about the occult side with references. Perhaps a video on the devil on dartmoor. I don't believe that the devil is universally regarded as bad. "Lucifer" means bringer of light. Meanwhile true story: a friend worked on an historic abuse case (D notice imposed you won't know of it) which involved satanic stuff, all on the edge of the moor........

Can be both, plenty of heroes have been bastards, and equally the reverse.

Spot on - some of his acts, especially his circumnavigation, were certainly brave, but he definitely wasn't a moral person! I wonder if his bastardlyness was an important ingredient in performing those heroic feats?
@TigerLily7.
@TigerLily7. Жыл бұрын
@@thedartmoorpodcastNo, it's not "heroic" to cause suffering while indulging in some pompous adventuring. That's recklessness and narcissism. Real bravery is strong ethics and kind heart - quietly working in order to protect others.

All the crap about slavery really annoys me, practically EVERYONE did it back then! I lived and worked in Saudi for 6 years and they are STILL doing it! So are lots of African and Asian cultures, it's an old mindset, contemptible nowadays but considered normal back then, get off the pathetic PC wagon for chrissakes!
@thedartmoorpodcast
@thedartmoorpodcast 8 ай бұрын
I wouldn't say it's outrageously PC to suggest that slavery is bad! Anyway, I think the main point I try and make in this video is that even if you ignore his rather minor involvement in the slave trade, Drake proved himself time and time again to be a self-serving individual.
