Dr Gwilym Morus-Baird and Tom Hirons discuss the Middle English classic Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. In this second part we explore the tensions between desire and death and the different types of morality that can be read in the poem.

I really enjoyed your in depth discussion of reading this myth and others as an instruction manual on ways of how to behave and be that are alternatives to our current social norms. I agree with your conclusions that rather than following the myths by rote as a sequence of procedures we need to learn to listen to our souls to find out what we're here for. It's a conclusion I've also reached but it's very difficult to put into practice in a society in which the concepts of soul and divinity have been bound up to Christian conceptions for so long then exorcised by rationalism and science and capitalism. I found it heartening to find such dialogue taking place - it's pretty rare.

I really enjoyed this heartfelt, honest conversation. I love your energy. I also feel called to draw your attention to Wordsworth's The White Doe of Rylestone. Just because of the use of deer. Thank you.

It does feel like someone's put their own ending on when G goes on a derogatory rampage against the feminine. However, there are no mistakes from a higher perspective, so, what I've taken from it is he sounds like a lot of people in the 'spiritual' community. People pleaser, all about the look manipulating his way into favour rather than holding reverence and appreciation, sovereignty and integrity. I know it's a survival instinct, but it's survival of the flesh being more important than the vibrancy and immaculate condition of the soul. Every moment, every interaction counts.

He's certainly not the hero we assume him to be at the beginning.
